Positive the reason you heard Kenny Rankin's version as not being contemporary - is that you were listening to a recording made back in the 70's or 80's. Kenny was performing up until his recent death - and he was an amazing jazz artist - always on the edge of the new. He is, after all, the man who wrote the words and music and laid down the framework for the vocal interpretation here. That being said, I personally love Jason Mraz's work. I love Jason's songs and this cover does Kenny proud.
this is how gg thinks about how i feel about him...ive half proven it with all my crazy and foolish acts that ive never done in my life and he doubts about it...no comment...gg could have done a lot of kindness to me not knowing it and i thank him for that...and fair is fair weve done half of it and the other half is when time comes we will meet if ever....let destiny?fate or whatever inexplainable force that will hve the strength or power to keep us together..
He recently listed his musical influences and was cool enough to list KENNY RANKIN right up there, thereby turning on a whole new audience to this music.
I can't believe Mraz's taste. This is an excellent cover of a brilliant song. I'm totally gobsmacked by this - I thought after that stupid ubiquitous "I'm Yours" song that he'd completely abandoned the greatness and originality of his earlier work. Apparently I was wrong.

This is a nice version....but it would have been nice for Jason to find HIS OWN way of singing it rather than taking Kenny's version. He can't compare to Kenny......
I just love Jason. His musicality is sheer awesomeness. I've never heard the original of this song, but I'm sure I'll like Jason's version better -- this is wonderful!
I went and found Kenny Rankin's version. You are correct -- his version is great as well. Jason's is just more contemporary (and of course it is Jason!). I was sorry to hear of Kenny Rankin's passing.
He died of lung cancer, in his sleep, peacefully. He was an amazing artist. It's weird that Mraz did this so soon before his death. They should make a tribute album or something.
