@codyrichter3058 In a crosswind landing, the mains shouldn't hit the ground at the same time. The upwind main should touch first, then the downwind main, then the nose.
@flyingthings1 Take a look at the windsock, just before touchdown and see...the wind is not strong...5 to 10 knots......with this wind you can make a perfect landing with a small DA 20 Katana. For a big airplane it is not a problem...so this landing is really bad. But everyone can make mistakes. Errare human est :)

@pilotdude53 Its not always possible when your low on fuel or are in an emergancy, cross wind landings are really difficult but pilots are trained to approach them with a few different techniques. Sometimes the pilot should just go around though, depends heavily on the situation.
@backhandable If it was an emergency I would understand, but if he was low on fuel, again I would say Bad Pilot because of poor judgement. He should have enough for his alternate plus 45 min. If for some reason he lost fuel due to being put in a hold for too long than I would understand the low fuel.

Bad Pilot? Thats a fucking excellent Pilot, who was experienced enough to have special commendations / award from the FAA which allowed him to make an Approach / Land at Kai Tak, which was the worlds most dangerous airport because of the risk of severe crosswinds and not to mention an very difficult, dangerous approach.

I don't know much about flying but considering the pilot has to turn sharply and almost straighten up as he crosses the airport perimeter and then land in a cross wind it seems these are always going to be bad landings. Thankfully GOOD pilots like these make it come right. Whatever it would have been a hell of a cool ride in that plane.

For all of you saying that this was a great landing, be quiet. Yes, it was an extremely challenging crosswind landing, and the pilot is probably very well trained, but there is absolutely no reason for a pilot to be landing outside of the runway edge lines. The pilot should have performed a go around and attempted a safer landing.
@mhflyboy72 It could of contributed some other unknown factors like the angle the final was entered, or forced to enter (like the Kai Tak Landing where you come in at a horrifying 45 degree turn right before landing.) This could be kai tak by seeing all the buildings around and the pilot is using a MD-11.

BUT, notice at about 0:05 he is yawing to the left, and applying *more* left rudder, instead of trying to straighten out.
That's where the bad piloting comes in. He was close enough to not have to worry about being pushed by the crosswind, and low enough that he should've straightened out.
That's why he landed left wheel first and also at an angle
Had he tried to slip anymore, he'd have hit the runway with the left wing.
While it should have been a go-around, I don't know the circumstance and this may have already been his 2nd or 3rd attempt. Regardless, he performed a fantastic cross-wind landing.

I am a pilot and i've landed in crosswinds (obviously not in airliner like this), but any pilot knows what he did slightly wrong here (but he did land safely).
he applied left rudder when was already yawing too far left.
All I'm saying is it's obvious the crosswing component for this landing exceeded the maximum demonstrated (recommended) for this aircraft. He did the correct procedure for this landing. Touched the wind-side main, then the opposite main, then the nose. Perfect had he not been crabbed and right of center. His slip was at absolute maximum and anymore and he'd have landed the wing.
While I would have reshot this landing, he pulled it off. He had no choice but to keep the crab.
alitalia pilots are considered very highly specialized pilots in the world being former military jet pilots serving in military aviation before becoming civilians.
1st video: fyi, Kai Tak Int. Airport (Hong Kong, China) was one of the most difficult airports to land on and that Alitalia pilot did a superb job in landing the aircraft in one piece. Novice pilots would have not been so lucky to off a landing like that.not even close.
A better pilot would have known when to call it quits and go around. He was half off the runway.

Bad pilot???? The guy managed to put a super heavy aircraft on the ground safely even though it was facing strong crosswind. Do you fly? Do you have this aircraft's type rating to judge the professional in the cockpit? Don't bother answering, these are only rhetorical questions. The answers are obvious.

For all of you saying that this was a great landing, be quiet. Yes, it was an extremely challenging crosswind landing, and the pilot is probably very well trained, but there is absolutely no reason for a pilot to be landing outside of the runway edge lines. The pilot should have performed a go around and attempted a safer landing.

@mhflyboy72 It could of contributed some other unknown factors like the angle the final was entered, or forced to enter (like the Kai Tak Landing where you come in at a horrifying 45 degree turn right before landing.) This could be kai tak by seeing all the buildings around and the pilot is using a MD-11.

it wasnt him when closswinds hit the plane tends to drift which can make it difficult crosswinds make it hard to land in for a crosswind he did pretty good

yea it might have been a tad sloppy. for all those trying to point out his flaws. id like to see you do it ... its easier said than done. that is one of the things that takes years to get down. prob one of the few things that will actually challenge a pilot... that and fatigue

Playing ACE COMBAT on Xbox does not make you a fighter pilot nor does it give you the knowledge, skill, personal experience, or right to judge this pilot. I'm not nor will I ever be a pilot. I'm willing to bet 90+% of you won't be either. When you've walked a mile in another man's shoes then you may criticize till then keep a close eye on the deep fryer I don't like soggy fries.

I hate when people do criticize things like this.But, I have used a simulation called flight simulator X.It was fantastic, gave me a real idea.I learned all the instruments and abilities from it.Now I am studying for my Private pilot license and will be getting my CPL and ATP.Hoping of flying a340-600`s.One thing I might have to disagree with you is that lot's of people here will be pilots.But only if you are enthused and positive=)

okay everyone saying he's a great pilot, you're wrong.
Yes, he landed the plane safely, which is difficult in a crosswind,
BUT, notice at about 0:05 he is yawing to the left, and applying *more* left rudder, instead of trying to straighten out.
That's where the bad piloting comes in. He was close enough to not have to worry about being pushed by the crosswind, and low enough that he should've straightened out.
That's why he landed left wheel first and also at an angle

Had he tried to slip anymore, he'd have hit the runway with the left wing.
While it should have been a go-around, I don't know the circumstance and this may have already been his 2nd or 3rd attempt. Regardless, he performed a fantastic cross-wind landing.
How many of these have you performed to be such a critic? WAIT.. This is Youtube.. How many of these have you performed that you can PROVE..

I am a pilot and i've landed in crosswinds (obviously not in airliner like this), but any pilot knows what he did slightly wrong here (but he did land safely).
he applied left rudder when was already yawing too far left.
can't really have an argument on that one

All I'm saying is it's obvious the crosswing component for this landing exceeded the maximum demonstrated (recommended) for this aircraft. He did the correct procedure for this landing. Touched the wind-side main, then the opposite main, then the nose. Perfect had he not been crabbed and right of center. His slip was at absolute maximum and anymore and he'd have landed the wing.
While I would have reshot this landing, he pulled it off. He had no choice but to keep the crab.

alitalia pilots are considered very highly specialized pilots in the world being former military jet pilots serving in military aviation before becoming civilians.

1st video: fyi, Kai Tak Int. Airport (Hong Kong, China) was one of the most difficult airports to land on and that Alitalia pilot did a superb job in landing the aircraft in one piece. Novice pilots would have not been so lucky to off a landing like that.not even close.

I wouldn't do the Kai Tak approach on a day with no wind and perfect visibility, with a crosswind like that, it wasn't bad at all.
