A great song...I saw SAXON way, way back in the 80's.....they were supporting RAINBOW at DEESIDE LEISURE CENTRE in the UK......Saxon were awesome.Earlier this year I bumped into BIFF in London [FEB 2011] and was lucky enough to chat with him. What a great guy..and great sense of humour....
Who says NWOBHM bands can't do power ballads? Whether the band or their fans feel so or not, Destiny had some great tracks like this song, We Are Strong, and one of the greatest metal covers of a non-metal song ever in Ride Like The Wind. And don't forget Song For Emma. That tune is freakin epic.
I wish Saxon would incorporate some of the material from the 'Destiny' and 'Innocence Is No Excuse' albums in their live set. Truly molten slabs of hard rock!!!!
i just don't see why they call this the "bad era." maybe to metal purists, but i major in music and have so much love for damn near every style of music, and this foray into arena rock territory was very interesting in my eyes. this song easily could have been written by steve perry and jonathan cain, but biff's distinctive voice and graham's notably different soloing style from neal schon makes it theirs.
Nothing wrong with the music but its not really metal..sounds way more like a harder Journey song. Whether Maiden could pull the song off or not is moot...they wouldn't even try.
Unfortunately... the 'bad' era of Saxon, Biff himself admits. No fault of their own, trying to appeal to the 'commercial' metal market in the US at the time. They deserved to get some higher success. Couple of temporary members, too. (Gee, could the drummer twirl the sticks a bit more?) Thank goodness they got back on track with 'Solid Ball of Rock' in 1990!
actually firebott in this era yes kids pop and teen rock didnt exist but death metal and rap were there and they were huge! But heavy, hard rock, glam rock and sleaze rock were better than other shit!
You've never heard 747(Strangers In The Night), Piss Off, or Raise Some Hell obviously so wait for the comments till you have BOTH ears. Someone who can't appreciate more than one style of music in a band is obviously dense anyway. You want Viking outfits watch football and while you're at it it's Mister Rogers not RODGERS. This doesn't become you lol
Unleash The Beast! Saxon is a too often forgotten gem \m/
As to my Mister Roger's Neighborhood :chuckles: we both screwed up. It was spelling for you and I left out the apostrophe and "neighborhood". So, yes, I was as guilty as you lol As for being an authority I have to be familiar with that show because I have a 4 year old nephew and an almost 3 year old niece. I have no choice in the matter. Their parents got them DVDs of him over a year and a half period. Love the bands you love and I'll love mine. Take care.
If you're into other bands like Slayer and Danzig that's cool. I just don't understand why if you dislike Saxon to that extent why you go to one of their videos let alone one that has about their slowest tempo. I figure if you don't like it don't hate on the people that do lol I'm still wondering how keen you'd be on them if they HAD been wearing costumes. Am I wrong or would you have found that kinda "glam"? BTW, I love Danzig and Slayer's music too.
@blancfaces Did you by the record when it was released back in June 1988 like I did, Saxon had gone a bit soft at this stage however, I have aways stuck by this band been a true Yorkshireman like the band. Saxon are now back at the top they were massive at Download "Monster of Rock to me"
@TheHijacked ... no: i was 7 years old in 1988 :) but i discovered SAXON late and I liked, as you can see on my last cover... did you sow it by the way?
GREAT SONG.KIND OF GLAMM SAXON,BUT ALL THEY WANT WAS AMERICAN MARKET.BUT GREAT ALBUM AND SONG.STILL I LIKE BETTER WHEN THEY STICK TO WHAT THEY ARE.A FULL BLOODED NWOBHM BAND!STILL...GREAT SONG!HAIL SAXON!
@LTBiermacht You don't know shit your just stuck in the past and your not open for new music...if it's not from the 80's you won't listen to it. You probobly never even listened to any of the bands I wrote and your just stuck in your box where extreme metal is not allowed. Those bands are technical, creative musical and energetic, have some great musicians in them that have influence from so many genres.Dude Saxon were popular back then, and we still listen to them cause they have a greatfeel
@LTBiermacht It's not mainstream or pop it's just bands that succeeded more then otheres and more people listen to by chance, they aren't selling thier ass for money like justin bieber byonce lady gaga or any of that other crap.
@LTBiermacht Melodeath is great music and is deep in lyrical and musical content and had some great bands in it.I enjoy the old school stuff in music in general not just metal, but there are some good things now that arent mainstream.
I like their heavier stuff. This trying too hard to be American. I don't blame them for it as is was a huge market. I just like their balls to the walls stuff
I don't care what critics say. The only thing that matters is the connection between the listener and the music. This is great music that is very easy to fall in love with. They sing really well here and hey there is no reason why a band can't be able to do this kind of music and still pull off Crusader. It shows a range of talent and I'd like to see Iron Maiden try to sing a song like this. It would be awful becuase they simply can't do it. The complete catalog of Saxon is quite versatile.
This is kinda soft comming from Saxon but I still like it. Guess they changed their sound on "Destiny" to make it moore available for american radio and MTV. Probably also why they look like a hairband here in this video ;-)
@knutby I lost track of them after solid ball of rock and Destiny never bought an album again with Queensryche it was the same after Promised land I just kept to the Old days
Ugh. This was my favorite heavy metal band ever. Now they're playing pop music crap? I guess with age (aren't they in their 50s?) everything must mellow out, but this is more than I can take! Saxon has totally changed their 80s sound and is playing radio hit style pop? Wow. I killed this video before 1/2 way. Saxon?! I can't beleive how they've changed. They should change their name to Suxon.
@jesusisbetter this is from the 80's.kind of their stab at trying to hit the radio friendly mainstream. It didnt work. they have long since returned to there rock roots
@jesusisbetter this is ballad, read the description on the vid. they are back to there hard rock ways believe me, check out protect yourselves or come rock of ages. they tried pop once and they didn't make that mistake again
I´ve always loved Saxon since I had heard "Wheels of Steel". I still love ´em! But indeed ... the times they tried to get into the U.S. market had their kind of funny sides, like this video. I bet, Biff would love to never have taped it ...
Strange video wich I think doen't have much to do with the tune. Anyway, cool performance and song! Some cool juggling from Nigel Durham on drums replacing temporarily the other Nigel who was on GTR at the time. I Think this power ballad / AOR song represents one of their attempts to reach the North American market
Indeed it sound a little like Whitsnake or Alice Cooper from that time! I prefer "Unleash the BEast" or "Boker Heroes" or things like that of Saxon, but this tune is nice to listen. But as I said it reminds me Whitesnake:)
@fireboltttt Fuck that death metal still existed and has always been a music with soul don't put it together with rap and teen pop or any that other shit.
I don't care if this song is totally against Saxon's style of music. Every hard rock band has melodic and touchy songs that are part of the soul of the music!
This was right when Whitesnake - another English metal/rock band - was hitting big in the United States. I believe their record company pressured SAXON to follow the same path to hopefully achieve the same success in America. But this is a great song and proves SAXON can write successfully in a surprising number of musical genres. Long live SAXON!!
It's not just glam rock. It's a mixure of stuff going on in the decade that brought this fashion and music together. You may be a young chap so cant remember it.
Great times, great music ect. Btw im touching 60.
Typical '80s glam rock antics. Swinging your guitar around when it doesn't make any sense to do so.
Don't get me wrong, I think Saxon, is great. I actually even prefer the newer stuff...1990 and onward, but I can't believe they did the glam rock thing back then.
Jesus Christ, what were they doing with this shit. Whose idea was it to try and "americanise" this band (Biff) Begining of the end for one our greatest bands
I think Destiny (the album this came from) is their most melodic and personally I think they should have made Calm Before the Storm a single as well. I dunno why but whenever I'm depressed this tune cheers me up. And then I started screaming for Heavy Metal Thunddddaaaaaaaaaaa!!!
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah what a beautiful song !!! I think I'll use it for my quality-time...

But this is a great song and proves SAXON can write successfully in a surprising number of musical genres. Long live SAXON!!

Every band has a corny song at some point. This must've been a decision by a bad manager. Saxon should not sound like doctor's office music !!

It's not just glam rock. It's a mixure of stuff going on in the decade that brought this fashion and music together. You may be a young chap so cant remember it.
Great times, great music ect. Btw im touching 60.

Love this song, my favourite Saxon song too!!

Typical '80s glam rock antics. Swinging your guitar around when it doesn't make any sense to do so.
Don't get me wrong, I think Saxon, is great. I actually even prefer the newer stuff...1990 and onward, but I can't believe they did the glam rock thing back then.

why shouldn't they do it ? Glam rules !!!
BlackBloodySabbath69 2 years ago
Well, Lincoln6Echo1, I still like the 80ies and the swinging guitars of glam rock (lol) - very nice song btw.

there are more synth parts than the track on the lp. maybe (i guess) in order to make it better suitable for the mtv/radio general audience.
