There's a problem with this video, performance, and casting: Beverly Sills as Rosina. Look at her. LOOK AT HER. She is so adorable and charming that there is *no goddamn way* Figaro wouldn't fall in love with her himself.
In order for this performance to be believable, it needs to end in a three-way battle royale while Beverly Sills bounces around and smiles happily at everybody. Then she runs away with me, because I love her.
Not yet, this is the first part of the trilogy. Also Rosina isnt a contesse yet...And thats why Bartolo seeks revenge on Figaro...Anyway wikipedia it. Or better yet read the Beaumarchais plays
No, Henry Price was the tenor. That's Titus. Titus was nominally a baritone at this point in his career but he sounded awfully tenorish and sang some tenor parts. Then he became a Verdi baritone. Today he's a Wagnerian Heldenbariton.
I wouldnt say that she is really speaking to him during the latter half of this song... Sills seems to be more concentrate don her singing than on communicating something through her singing
I would like to give an advice to everyone who sees this performance. My advice is that you should take a look to Hermann Prey and Teresa Berganza´s interpretation of this same duett. It seems to me that not everybody knows the existance of this film. I am talking about the one with Prey and Berganza.
It is not even an advice is more like a favor that I am asking. Check it out, and then but only after seeing Prey and Berganza you can compare and decide who you liked the most.
I have done you the favour and yes Teresa and Herman are total magic!!! Is it OK to say that I personally still am crazy about Beverly's interpetation of Rosina?? Teresa was a stunning singer but we cannot compare a mezzo with a coloratura soprano! Cheers!
I agree that you should check them all out. My only other comment is that Rossini was always meant to be sung by a Mezzo not a Soprano, hence Rossini wrote the arias and songs for a Mezzo not a soprano, thats why they sound better when performed as they were written by a Mezzo!
i agree with you, but rossini also wrote his works with certain singers in mind and would re-write arias for singers who didn't want to sing the originals in the opera. so it's almost the rossini-created tradition to perform in this way. though, i totally agree: the work cannot be truly appreciated unless it is performed following the original presentation of the composer.
The costumes are questionable, but Beverly Sills rocks! She's hilarious, too. I have yet to see a clip of this duet where the baritone can sing the coloratura as fast as the mezzo/soprano.
I feel so sad that Ms. Sills has left us, but her shimmering artistry lives on in videos and recordings. This is one of my personal favorites, and it also stars Samuel Ramey as the oily Don Basilio. Alan Titus makes a charming foil as Figaro to Ms. Sills' Rosina. My condolences to her family and friends.
He certainly is a great singer with such voice and presence, but fioritura/ semiquaver runs just weren't his things i guess... I'll start praying for another Juan Diego Florez who's a baritone...
if didnt exist the barytone to sing the original score i count understant what is that...too much variation! funny! but like that every singer write a score!
I love Sills creativity with the last measures of the song... she sounds wonderful and yes very bouncy... she seems to have made he song her own if not as catchy as other versions I have seen... a talent indeed!
Alan Titus is fantastic here. And Sills *sounds* good, but the ornamentation is wacky.

i think thats a very accurate comment

Well yes, but that part is just recapitulation anyway, and it fits Rosina's self-congratulatory, pesty (but ultimately likeable) character.

does the baritone in this duet always sing the high G at the end?? I sing this duet a lot, and I always sing it as written. just curious?

It depends upon whether the conductor will allow it and the Figaro has enough energy.
