A "kludge" is a hastily-built attachment or contraption that invariably involves duct tape and alcohol.

That said, blimps are the perfect vehicle to kludge things on. Their lift, maneuverability, size and stability means that pretty much anything you can think of has been hoisted by one. Including planes, mobile homes(no kidding!), nukes, boats, etc...

What actually caused the heli to crash.. I mean, i know he shouldnt have been pulling a boat, and the NTSB would surely say pilot error, but what do any of you pilots out there think went on in the cockpit? Did he overcorrect or was there an LTE involved, or maybe something to do with ground effect combined with the tug on the rope? IDK

This is why I prefer blimps. Way cheaper than a million-dollar helicopter and you can just attach whatever the hell you want to it. Planes, radar arrays, boats, skydivers, giant rainforest observation decks, all have been successfully hoisted aloft by the venerable blimp-kludge.

What happened is a "dynamic rollover". In short: 1) heli tilts to move forward 2) heli tugs at boat, therefore boat tugs at helicopter 3) the tug at the heli makes it tilt more 4) increased tilt means harder tug... repeat 3 and 4 'til you fall into the sea.

In this care it probably ended well though... meaning only property damage, and then we can laugh at it because this is/should be common knowledge to any two cent cyclic jockey.

The boat wasnt to heavy, it was a dumb idea yes but it is called dynamic rollover. Thats the occurrence of a rolling motion when there is a pivot point and the critical angle is exceeded. The rate was so great that the pilot had no time to react and level the aircraft.

the spinning blades create lift which pulls them up along with the helicopter. the lift isn't strong enough to carry much more than the body of the helicopter, though.
