Jack Nitzsche and Sonny Bono co-wrote the music and lyrics. Jackie sang it first in 1963 followed by the Searchers in 64, and any number of others afterward.
John McNally & Mike Pender were the true originals of the Searchers. Sometimes when a band has all it's elements, luck, friction magic can happen. Then it's hard to maintain. When it was Pender, McNally, Curtis and Jackson that was it.. Period. I saw them Live on Ed
Some times when bands lose an ingredient they can't re-create that magic. The Stones lost their edge when Jones died, The Who with Moon, Izzy leaving GnR. Zeppelin was on the money when Bonham passed and retired the band..
Yeah, the drummer could have done more, but this tune doesn't call out for too much. It could be easy to over-play. Just a matter of opinion, like most tunes. I like to play this one. It's simple, but fun.
i've seen both Mike Pender's Searchers, and these guys - and the latter are FAR SUPERIOR. Their live shows are epic. This is a backing track for some cheapo German show, so their efforts cannot be properly judged. They are proper rockers. PLUS, the guy on the left has been with them longer than Pender had.
The vocals are good, it's the drumming skills that are soooo lacking! Chris Curtis drumming style cannot be brought back, and this drummer makes no effort. Let's hope their new drummer puts forth more energy where it is required.
I'll repeat, recorded version, lip sync, whatever, they didn't change the dynamics of the song as so many artist do, but enhanced and improved it way beyond the original.
I am blown away. Always liked this song but this live version may be the best live performance 30 years after original I have ever experienced for any artist ever
Actually Frank wasn't an original Searcher, he took over from Tony Jackson. Still, If the "Beach Boys" can tour with one original member, why not the Searchers?
Did he sing on Sweets for my sweet, Needles and Pins, Dont throw your love away, Love Potion no 9? No to all of those. Im happy to be a pedant if it means I know my facts. Why not visit wikipedia and get clued up?
Mike Love made a mockery of the Beach Boys name after Carl Wilson passed away. There is nothing wrong with touring as the Searchers they have one original member and another member from the early/mid sixties.
From an emotional point of view I agree with you, but if what you say about the Searchers is true, it also, unfortunately, applies to the "Beach Boys," who have one original member-Love and another from the mid sixties- Bruce. it's curious that the current Searchers lineup is not offensive to original fans, while Love's money-grubbing machine certainly is.

Wow, the new sound. That killed the 60's version a tad though. Anyways, glad to see Franke still slapping that bass!

Too bad they mixed it so as to remove almost all of the jingle-jangle 12-string sound that made the song.

Pedant.
Frank joined in 1964, from Cliff Bennets Rebel Rousers & his debut was the hit "When You Walk In The Room".
I think that classes him as being "Original".
