  • Hey, you bastard, it's freakin awesome! :)

But don't you want to make a video about drums? There are no really useful metal drum tutorials on the web. Drum sound is something wicked, because I mix a more-or less good drum sound in solo, but if I try to use it with guitars and bass, it sucks...

Btw what drum stuff are you use? It's VST or live, or what? If it's VST, please tell me, what is it... pleeeeaaaase :)

At all, I would like you to teach me, master. Im fuckin serious.

  • Hey man thank you very much for this video! This video was what I was looking for.

But i still can't reach that quality that you get, I noticed that your sound waves (of your tracks) are different than mine (mine are smaller and different with the same program layout ) , I think my input volume is too low and I don't know how to change it. (I have a pod studio ux2 and my guitar is plugged in it). Can you help me on that? I will aprecciate that! :)

    Stay Brutal

  • @Deadshadow16

    No problem,

I'm not familiar with the UX2 but there should be an input gain knob on it somewhere, if not on the interface itself then in the software. Turning that up will increase your input volume. Or what I do is record relatively quiet so I don't risk clipping, and then simply drag the volume up on the clips to increase their gain.

  • hey i have cubase, and alot of impulses, but my computer can't support each channel of guitars having their own impulse loader. Is there any possible way i can load 2 mono tracks into 1 single master impulse loader so both tracks can share it ? or do i have to give each channel their own impulse loader?

  • @TheFredster93

You can route two guitar tracks to an FX track with an impulse loader on it... I've never tried it, it definitely wouldn't be as effective as giving each guitar track their own impulse loader but I'm sure sharing one would give you decent results. What I'd recommend is recording on a track, do your basic distortion processing, and then bounce the track (render it and re-import it into your project).

  • Can someone link me to a video on how to convert dll files to vst's? I can't find any & I wanna use these plugins for logic pro (mac). Thanks!

  • @takmat70

It's because converting Windows dlls to Mac VST's is incredibly difficult, far beyond the capabilities of any end-user.

Your easiest solution would be to boot some sort of DAW in Windows Parallels that supports the plug-ins.

  • @Scorge120 I'm not to clear on what you meant, but thank you anyways. Do you know if they have the plug-ins in this video in a vst format?

  • @takmat70 For Mac, you have to use AU plugins NOT "VST/dll" plugins. Mac plugins and Windows plugins are differently coded. And he's using Windows and Cubase 5. Look up "LePou Plugins" on Google search and he recently made AU versions[Mac versions] of all the plugins, so use those! I hope that helped! = ]

  • @takmat70

Woops yeah I forgot about that Infinitoar. LePou have made most of their plug-ins available as AU's for Logic. However their impulse loaders still don't work on Mac OS, luckily there's a freeware AU impulse loader called LAConvolver. Do a Google search on it, that oughta solve your issue.

  • What is the name of the beggining song that he is playing? Or did he just make that up? Cuz it sounds really nice

  • @THEFLAMINGFRO

It's called Bowsers Castle, it's written by my band. You can check us out in the links in the description! :]

  • @Scorge120 Thankk youuu

  • Bass tutorial pls :DDDD

  • Which DAW do you use?

  • Hey man which software lets you make that voice? The narrator's voice? Its so awesome!

  • Every time i try to load the TSE808 plug in qubase crashes.. Any idea why?

  • @tossletten Same here, I even tried downloading the TSE808 from elsewhere but Cubase still crashes. Anyone got any advice on this? Thanks!

  • @harku123 i think i got it figured out.. it won't work on the 64bit version (i instaled as 32bit now) also i had version 5,5,3 but i "downgraded" to 5,0.. now it works fine.. but sometimes ALL the plugins lose connection.. but if you don't close the plugins it seems to work.. hope this helps.. almost went mad over this:P

  • I can't find your bass mixing tutorial?

  • @underneaththesilence

    Not up yet... :p

  • How do u record bass guitar?

  • i dont know how u do but im doing exactly waht u say in this tutorial and i dont get that great sound i have some i dont know sucky sound and i am doing like u...can u help me pls i dont know how to get this sound from tutorial

  • are you ambidextrous?

  • @slashman5

    No, I wish.

  • Hey man, this tutorial is awesome, but as soon as I duplicate the track four times and attempt to play it back my audio is skipping and lagging (I also see ASIO time overload)... I'm using Cubase 5. I have a quadcore 3GHz CPU and 16GB of RAM, any idea what the problem could be?

  • @blakeman8192

Couple be a couple of things, try lowering your sample rate if it's higher than 44.1khz, and increasing your buffer size (256 samples is a nice balance between latency and CPU usage for recording, I find). But with your specs you mentioned I don't think that these factors would cause your CPU to overload with only 4-tracks.

  • What guitar have You used while recording this tutorial?

  • @LordGrimfrost

    An older Cort X-series model.

  • @Scorge120 What kind of pickups?EMG 85/81?

  • @LordGrimfrost

Not sure, dual-coil pickups something :p

  • @Scorge120 Did you plug your guitar straight into an interface without any pedals or effects?

  • @Lovemetal629

    yup!

  • Will I be the only one to try this with a Sonar program? If not let me know and how it worked for you.

  • Comment removed

  • awesome dude..one questionn tho..are those drum back tracks .do u play the drums or use a drum machine how to i get drum tracks what do i do

  • @xxunsignedxx

I used Addictive Drums for the drum track, I'd recommend looking up some articles online on how to program drums.

  • your skills are good but your metal has no soul

  • hey man, great video!! im using cubase 5 . the pluggins seem to crash it when i try to drag them into the VST2 folder? any help? :) thanks

  • @henryflannel

    Thanks :)

You don't want to be dragging them into the VST2 folder. Drag them into the folder specified in the video.

  • Hey, I'd like to ask one more question if its okay:) I have a Zoom g9.2tt pedal which has 2 tubes (on cabs it sounds awesomely powerful) and also a USB output for the computer. If I record, I get an OK sound, similar to (somewhat better) the one you call "half decent" in this video. Can I get a nice sound out of this (with your method), or is it only possible with DI and an interface? Im asking cos I currently don't have my gear with me (Im abroad) but I might buy new stuff cos it's cheaper here

  • Wow this is brilliant, but how exactly do you record the stuff? I mean is the guitar connected to your computer with a Jack or USB, or do you mike your amps? Thx a lot!

  • @moonsuga

    Thank you! :)

I use a DI (direct input) into an audio interface (Saffire Pro 40). For re-amping your best bet is just going DI. It's super easy and you're getting the raw, unaltered signal straight from your guitar.

  • hey man got your inbox reply.. thanks sorted it out now but one last question.. where is this link to the package you or someone else put together? cant seem to locate it anywhere?

  • @Afterlife088

Hmm, I'm not sure what package you're talking about?

  • Man your tone is so clear, everytime I try to brighten up the tone it just doesnt sound metal anymore, it just sounds like I boosted the high end and then have an annoying high pitch frequency. Are you using active pick ups on your guitar?

  • @SeanAmazingful

eh don't make the mistake of making your guitar tone brighter. In most cases you'll just end up with a piercing sound will make the rest of the mix painful to listen to.

Remember when you're mixing you want to make everything as flat as and balanced as possible so that your mix will translate well through other systems. Playing back a bright mix through a Bose sound system sounds like shit because Bose systems already hype up the treble.

No I am not using active pickups :p

  • @Scorge120 Oh alright man, yeah I was wondering why when I tried to add some high shelf to the guitar it sounded great on my headphones and then sounded like shit on my car stereo hahah. thanks for that tip man

  • how do i get vst's into garageband??

  • @dannydavidsongriffin

Garageband does not support VST plug-ins :(

  • @Scorge120 does logic support VST?

  • @thedarkesthero

Nope, you'd need to use a VST to AU wrapper.

  • @Scorge120 ah fuck... lol

  • needs more mids... way too muddy

  • Downloaded and added to my vst folder but my DAW isn't picking it up. Will ProTools LE recognize these plugins? Didn't see anything said about ProTools compatibility in the previous comments. Really killer tone man!

  • @matthatmusic

Thanks, I'm not sure about Pro Tools, I can't say I have ever used the program in my life :p Sorry

  • What programme are you using?

  • @FokasSk8er

    Cubase 6.

  • @Scorge120 Can I find it cracked in a torrent site?

    Sick tutorial btw!

  • @FokasSk8er

Nope, I'd recommend looking into Reaper though. It's $50 and it kicks ass.

  • @FokasSk8er Yeah,I currently use Reaper, but I want to try out something different to see whats best.

    Thanks anyway.

  • You should do a video on how to get a good metal tone using the new vst amp rack in cubase 6 :P

  • @mike935423

Lol I was thinking about that...

  • Can anyone tell me how to load LAconvolver into Logic 9 please?

  • Ive tried to download LAconvolver for my macbook pro yet for some reason it cannot find a suitable program to load LAconvolver? help?

  • @Afterlife088

It's an AU (audio unit) you will need to find a program such as Garage Band or Logic that support this type of plug-in. Cubase does not support AU plug-ins.

Also, if you're trying to open LAconvolver directly by double clicking on the file it wont work, you need a host application to run it in (like GB or Logic).

  • So if i record on a digital recorder, then upload the tracks after..I should record dry w/no fx or distortion??

  • @Krazyrok11

    dry, no fx or distortion.

  • my tone's better :P

  • thanks, you're the best!

  • Great video!

  • That means i dont need a real amp or mic placement???

becuase the impulse itself is amp with a mic :)

btw what gear's are you using on this vdo??

    need to know everything

  • Aside from the herp derps and what not, very helpful video! I probably won't use those plug ins, but being a noob and all I didn't think to high pass and low pass and do multiple recordings and shit

  • ou can't do that impulse stuff on logic can u? I can't find au units for that

  • @dreaminginnoother

    Try LAConvolver.

  • @Scorge120 thanks!

  • @dreaminginnoother you can do them in spacedesigner. it says ir and theres a little down arrow there you click to load your impulse responses

  • @TKoneseventeen yay! thanks!

  • @dreaminginnoother nvm. I found all the available AU. So just thanks again

  • @TKoneseventeen you the man. this shit is awesome. who needs real amps? since you seem to be in the know. you know where to get the solo c poulin? Somehow I already have 3 other ones. I tried to get this stuff together a few months ago but didn't have that key piece of info. If not, that's cool, I got a lot to play with

  • @dreaminginnoother there is no mac port for the solo c that i know of. but if you have a pc or want some other mac stuff you can get it from their blog. just google LePou Plugins

  • @TKoneseventeen yeah man, i found it right after I sent you the first msg, thas why i said nvm. I got more to play with then I'll probably even get around to. this poulin guy is a genius!

  • How is the guitar connected to the computer?

  • @Aaaa7xxxx1

Plugs into an external sound card (Saffire Pro 40).

  • by the part where u showed the track u played for your metal album...how did u do that effect to show u playing the 2 different guitar parts for the song. What split screen is this, how do i get it and how do I use it? Is it in movie maker??

  • @Dmachine19

I cropped both videos, put each one on its own video track and played them at the same time in sync with the song. I haven't used Windows Movie Maker in years so I'm not sure if they've implemented a dynamic cropping tool yet, I used Sony Vegas for this video.

  • cant someone just tell a amp that can can just make that sound?

  • @MatKiller1197

Fractal Axe FX is perhaps the best amp simulator in the world. Not cheap though haha.

  • ti lee re malakes kanane to onoma tou soldano poulin epomeni fora prepei na to kanoun psolin

  • Will this setup work for any system ie:mac? great video btw I would really like to get this setup going but I am new to mac's and it has not been working

  • @mike935423

The plug-ins that I use in this video wont work with Mac, but the same concept can be applied in any OS/DAW.

  • @Scorge120 that sucks, im new to this so any suggestions for a quick metal tone like this for mac? Thanks either way

  • @mike935423

Yes, if you go to the LePou plug-ins you'll see that there are several free amp sims that are offered for mac, I'd recommend going with Lecto, it's arguably the best free amp sim VST.

As for an impulse loader, I've tried searching but as of now I don't think there are any free VST's. That's why I don't like using mac for mixing, I don't have money to spend on software and the freeware base for mac is like 2 plug-ins :-(

Cubase also runs better on the PC :-)

  • @Scorge120 thanks man for the tips, I checked out some of your vid's and your band it sounds real good, I may just buy a impulse loader if I have to I guess Ill look around. The video you made was great hopefully you will make more tutorials.

  • @mike935423

No problem, and thank you :)

Yea, I'm currently working on a music video and finishing up this school semester, after that though I'd love to put out some more tutorials.

  • cubase costs an £400, no way am i spending that on a peice of software... did you download it free? otherwise is fl studio 10 fine to use?

  • @squiffyk7

Yea, any DAW with VST support is fine to use, that includes FL studio. And no, I did not download it for free.

  • great tutorial!!, I am having trouble when I duplicate more then two tracks. The sound comes in disbursements. I thought it was from having different guitar impulses but it still has the same problem. your help would be appreciated thanks

  • I got it sounding great! Thanks dude! Such a fucking badass!

  • Greetings, very useful tutorial. I tryed to get tone like yours and i did exactly the same presets like you did, but my tone sounds very muddy and dark with tones of bass. I`m using Reaper for recording, and ESP Horizon Fr2 directly connected to my sound card. I dont know what to doo, it`s sounds worse than guitar on the beginning of the video -.-. For listening i`m using Adam A3X monitors. Can you help somehow? Thanks!

  • @denisjalsovec

Turn up the volume of the higher shelved guitars, turn down the bass on the amp sims, use different impulses, boost treble, reduce the amount of low-pass filtering on the low shelved guitars, experiment with cutting frequencies between 100-500hz to eliminate "mud" and "boominess".

  • Comment removed

  • excellent tutorial! thanks!

    also, very nice finger work.

  • Hi Scorge120, thank for this video, very usefull! I´m using a Toneport KB 37 (line 6). I can open your set and hear all, but when i record my audio track is blank. But if i open Gearbox and record, i can hear what i did. I´m starting in cubase now and if you can help me i´ll be grateful. Thanks in advance.

  • @Andrews2kx

So you're using Cubase now? To set Cubase up with your Toneport go to Devices > Device set up and then click on VST audio system and select your Toneport as your interface. Then press F4 on your keyboard or go into VST connections and in the input section add a new mono bus. Then under your Device ports, select the input that your guitar is plugged into. Then create a new audio track and the routing for it should automatically be set to the mono in bus you just created.

  • @Scorge120 @Scorge120 I´m using cubase 5. I uploaded some 5 pics how i config my device: h ttp :/ /ww w .megaupload. com/ ?d=4J9OA9HK . No i can hear what i did, but the wave track is very small. When i open cubase bus is stereo as default. Take a look in pics and tell me if i doing something wrong. Thank you again for the help.

  • @Andrews2kx

Then you can click the little speaker icon on your Audio 01 track so that it turns orange to audition (hear) your guitar when you play. Remember to turn it off for playback otherwise you wont be able to hear what you recorded!

  • @Scorge120 Checked! Thank you!

  • "you'll notice your guitar now sounds like shit, but don't worry we will fix that!" lol!

  • I love all the meme refrences.

  • where is the bass tut???

  • @theguitarshredder987

Working on it over the break :p

  • Very awesome, I use cubase and i am learning by watching videos, it is great that you go step by step and do not use lingo that people who are not experienced will not get. I look forward to watching more of your videos!

  • oh and it'd be great if you could post the preset or something for those drums, or do a tutorial on what to think of when using drum software! like guidelines on how to mix those ^^

  • Great tutorial! quick question, when you showed the track from your album (with 8 guitars), what drums did you use there?

    :D

  • @skalla1000

I use Addictive Drums, I've been putting off other tutorials for awhile now, I'm on break again so I'll be throwing something together soon (hopefully).

Check out some of my other videos, I've got ones showing off some of my metal drum presets for Addictive Drums that you can download for free.

  • @Scorge120 Oh, great thanks! :D

  • Thank you a lot, man

  • Funniest video ever !

  • Hello, quick question! The tone I'm getting is pretty solid, but (1) the plugins seems to generate a lot of background fuzz on my clean input signal and (2) if I open up multiple tracks, the fuzz effect from every opened plugin seems to stack... (Not using Cubase). Any ideas to overcome this please?

  • @Exoow

Use a noise gate, make sure it's the first plug-in in your fx chain! :)

Try Floorfish by the digitalfishphones, free, effective and easy to use.

  • @Scorge120 Cheers bro, problem solved. First tried noise gate, did the job but not perfectly. Then switched to noise reduction (first in fx chain) - result is satisfactory! Thanks again for a great tutorial.

  • @Exoow

    No problem!

  • This is useful!

I'm currently trying hard to achieve a good metal tone, and I like a more punchy and razor-like tone, so slight EQ boost on low mids and borderline highs?

But you work with Cubase as i can see, which I'm getting here in january. Care for helping me over skype on a later point? Because I'm gonna record an EP, which I want as much help with as i can get. :)

  • @eliten0Ob

Yeah but be careful, it's really fun EQ'ing high frequencies, boost too much and the tone will make your ears bleed. Mess around with it though, personally I like to cut mids so that I can crank the mids on my bass guitar and get that heard in the mix more. Just experiment and see what you like, try doing some sweeps with a parametric band across the EQ spectrum and hear what you like and don't like!

  • @eliten0Ob

If you need help send me an inbox message with a link to your mix so I can listen to it and describe what you're trying to do with it, I can give you some pointers from there.

  • Hey brother, just wanted to thank you for putting up the metal mixing video. I've downloaded all the VST's, BUT, the TSE 808 plugin for some reason crashes my Cubase 6 every time I try and load it up as an insert...is this a common problem?

  • @Ponte506

    No problem.

I had that problem once when I ran a 64-bit version of Cubase. The TSE808 plug-in is 32-bit and will only work with 32-bit versions of Cubase. Not too sure what would be causing it to crash otherwise, sorry.

  • This looks amazing. I'll try this during my next recording session.

  • You are my hero. Thank you so much man!!!

  • true that. thanks for the info man.

  • @elarchenemy

Sure, all you need a dry guitar signal. However for this particular re-amping technique you would be better off just DI'ing the guitar into your audio interface/computer.

  • Did you record this using DI box?

  • @piperzimmerman

Yes.. well an audio interface (Focusrite Saffire Pro 40).

  • thx!

  • i got a few questions man. 1st, when you record, do you record like different takes or a single take for a song and do you record the four different guitar parts? .2nd, are you recording by microphone on cab, or straight into a audio interface?

  • @elarchenemy

I record 4 different takes of the same guitar riff/section. Make sure your playing is tight though, otherwise it'll sound like a huge mess.

I'm recording straight into my audio interface (Focusrite Pro 40).

  • Everything is perfect! THANK YOU!

One question though. when I place all the VST inserts in place I can no longer fade, use the blue volume envelope, or crossfade my WAVs.

However if I "Bypass Inserts" on that channel all my fades work.

I got around this by creating an FX track and assigning channels to each FX track. That way all my fades/crossfades/volume tweaks are all working.... BUT...

am I losing any quality by applying VSTs to FX channel and not the recording channel?

    Thanks again!

  • @DWIproductions

    No problem.

Hmm that's weird, the VST's should not be affecting any track parameters or cross-fading between audio clips.

No, you are not losing any quality by applying the effects to the FX channel.

  • @Scorge120

Fuck I'm such a nooob. But ya I agree, this seems like it isn't user error this time. Maybe hardware/software issue.

Right on, thanks for the quick reply. I'll post the tune when it's done. Thanks to you we have a nice testicular crunch to our axe tracks.

  • @DWIproductions

Haha no problem. Glad it helped.

If you want to hear my first recording ever and make yourself feel x10 better about recording watch my "Not Just - Original Rock Song" video on my channel. You'll laugh, or cry, or both.

  • This is cool. Thanks for the tips!!! Cool vid too. Well done.

  • amazing tone

  • I'm wondering if you can tell me why, when I use the guitar tone package, I get a huge delay? I run my guitar off of guitar port's hardware if it matters.

  • @Jackolan

What you're experiencing is latency. To reduce latency you'll have to reduce your buffer size in your audio sequencer or the control panel of your audio interface. Usually a rate of 256 yields good results (around 12ms delay for me) but I can get it down to 128 without it popping or crackling. If it pops or crackles you'll have to increase your buffer size incrementally until that stops and you should be left with hardly any delay.

  • @Scorge120 Of course! I already knew that but was too lazy to think of it. Now if only would teach me how to record vocals without sounding flat.

  • nice guide for beginners...hahha joke

    that's cool

  • Having trouble downloading the file. Anyone else?

  • @gl0stix

I'd recommend trying again with another internet browser. The files are still available, just tested them now. Let me know if you're still having difficulties or if the download goes down!

  • @Scorge120 I got it working! Thanks!

I normally produce electronic music, but I used to play guitar. This is a killer sound I'm getting

that I'm definitely going to use in some industrial recordings!

  • im having problems.. still sound bad, too dry...

  • @JAindustries

Generally you don't want to throw reverb/delay on rhythm metal guitars, you'll lose punch and definition and add more mud. Send me a sample of your mix with some details on your issue/setup!

  • Comment removed

  • Which impulse do you mainly use for guitar tone? Say for the demo of the quad tracking guitars- which one was that? cheers- video has helped me out shit loads :)

  • @Patchworkofficial

I'm pretty sure I used guitarhack JJ powertube 45 something and then the Catharsis spres-8 high and spres-8. Something like that haha I'll have to double check.

The orange ones are super nice for crunchier rhythms though.

  • @Scorge120 ahhh okay bud :) cheers man

  • great tutorial. I dont have cubase as I use mixcraft so I have no idea where that EQ filter is. But form what Ican get fro this video makes my audio sound better 100 fold.

  • Im assuming you used a narrator programme for your video. What was it?

  • @sorskilla

Can't remember exactly, it was one of those online speech converter thingies.

  • @Scorge120

    Ok, Thanks anyway!

  • what program are you useing? ive seen it been used before but i never found out what its was

  • @Bullets990

    Cubase 6.

  • @Scorge120 oh thanks

  • yyy...why so small amount of views?Probably most useful tutorial on YouTube...

  • The video did a bit to help me get started but I did recieve a few viruses after installing the pack. It could have been from elsewhere though.

  • @DeathToMayo

It was definitely from elsewhere, I downloaded the files from a trusted forum and have been using them without any issues for over a year now. There are absolutely no viruses in this package I guarantee you.

  • @Scorge120 No worries. Not trying to point fingers. Just pointing out a concern.

  • @DeathToMayo

Haha alright, I just want to reassure anyone who is questioning this download that they can trust me! =]

  • I followed your tips and my sound still sounds like shit:(. I replaced poulin with guitarrig as i liked that sound better. did 2 guitar total 4 tracks (1 guitar - high and lo right, 2 guitar - high and low left)

    any recomendations?

  • @lordbodom

There's lots of things that can be an issue, if you want to continue chatting about this send me an inbox message. If you could send me a sample of your guitar tone solo'd and then in the mix it'll really help me help you :]

  • Hi! Great, great tutorial! I just wonder where you have the mentioned bass tutorial? ... also... how did you make that computer voice?
