I agree, it sounded too fast for me too starting at 5.30. I've learned to know this part as starting very calm, almost melancholic but strong. Like one could take their time and linger, rest their soul after a fight they won with a heavy cost. Like it's dawn after a long night. I know nothing about music though, but it felt a bit rushed here.
for those that don't know, Hitler banned this piece from being performed because it would stir up the Finns to riots. Was all of Sibelius's work banned or just this piece?
Music truly is a universal language. The historical context of this song was written in protest against russian censorship... and now its conducted by a russian and played by english.
@RenMcAberae Perhaps you played just part of Finlandia known as Finlandia Hymn? In this recording it begins from 5:33. It is usually performed (sang) by choirs.
played this piece in high school at all-state. after learning of the history of this piece and the nationalistic pride that it stirs in Finns, I couldn't perform this piece without tears running down my face. Still stirs strong emotions in me after 30 years. I'm not Finnish, but American and an ex-Marine.
@mcculs2 I was walking down the road and somebody was playing the marines hymn on bagpipes it sounded really good I couldnt find where it was coming from
@mcculs2 you dont have to be finn to like finladia. or american to like thier music or art. thats kinda the point. enjoy what diffrent cultures have to offer in art.
Great one,,, nice harmony......really can preciate all modest and clear symphonies of alll..... sounds great.... kuulostaa mahtavalta... ei voi kuin ihaillla tätä sointia.... maamme laulu pitäis olla... oi suomi katso korkeallle .... =)
This is an absolute magnificent performance! Got chills throughout! Such an awesome piece of music possibly my favorite orchestra piece altogether! Astounding!
This piece is dramatic and full of emotion. Not every orchestra can pull this off. This Finnish music represents freedom from tyranny and is meaningful to anyone who loves liberty. Well done!
This piece of music has always reflected the Finnish courage in various ways, but most of all in the winter war and continuation war for the heroic actions against the evil and mighty russia.

Well, Jean described the moments of Finnish history into this song... up- and downsides! Those strangely translated songs are rather funny!

@mcculs2 Thank you for your kind words.
It's Finland's independance day today, the time of the year when I listen to this song with my cheeks wet.
It's such a beautiful piece and it represents the history of my home land so well it's impossible to describe in words.
