I'm really glad somebody uploaded this scene, thank you! Sean Penn is magnificent in this movie, especially this segment. I could watch it over and over.
I've never seen this movie but when Penn's character smacked his gun against that wood or whatever it was, it made me jump. Penn scares me in this role...
@hopkins4545 Shortly after the medical team examined the girl's body, arrests were made in what the army has always referred to as "the incident on Hill 192."
First there was Sergeant Meserve. Then there was Corporal Clark, who stabbed the woman. Finally, there were the brothers, Rafe and Manuel, from San Antonio, Texas. Rafe and Manuel backed up Eriksson's story. They said they had only gone along with the rape to maintain harmony within the group.
@hopkins4545 Wow, I have really gotten under your skin, haven't I. When you start using my name in unrelated posts, it's a clear sign that this has become more about shutting me down than speaking the truth, because the truth is what it is. You are not more concerned about winning the argument than anything else. Well, your fears are misplaced. I actually have nothing more than a passing interest in this film. If this is a true story, then those guys should be punished. we agree. Now go play.
erickson could have been killed for not going along with the rape and the killing of the girl.he was lucky he got chopperd back to base .because either clark or meserve would have shot him dead on the way back to base ,,some soldier like Fox's character in real life would have never made it back alive in that situation
yes it was. if you go back and look at the opening titles it clearly states that this is a true story " that was first reported by daniel lang in the new yorker in 1969." i also have seen that article
@bigdatut What is your pet fascination with this film? Are you feeling some sort of unconscious, hidden guilt about the horrendous results of the war system you support with such diseased enthusiasm--
This guy, bigdatut, is not true. Daniel Lang wrote a an ARTICLE published in the NEW YORK TIMES. It was leaked to him by the now anonymous "Errikson". Army officials refer to it as "Incident On Hill 192". The hill where they butchered this girl, finally. He'd excuse any army behavior.
@hopkins4545 Uh huh. This is a comment forum to discuss this film. I make comments, so I must have a "pet fascination" and "diseased enthusiasm". What gave it away? The only record of a person being tried for this crime was acquitted. Does that matter to you? I wasn't there, and neither were you, so who can say. Can I assume that you will be just as outraged by the true stories of attrocities committed by the Communist North? It's something like 100 to 1 in our favor. Or did you miss that fact?
@bigdatut You're lying. If you read the book (which you didn't, obviously) they were even suspicious of Errikson for a long time, assuming that he was trying to cover up his role in the crime by reporting it. They were each given 10 to 20 years and the U.S. military, having too much admiration for the platoon leader played by Sean Penn, let them all out with 2 years good behavior. I find it, frankly, diabolic that you're lying about this on purpose.
@hopkins4545 Well, by definition, if I am lying, then it has to be "on purpose" or else it's just a mistake. You keep saying "in the book" when I am saying "on the record". That's the difference. Anyone can write a book and say anything. Cite the record. But getting back to my previous question. Where is your outrage about the attrocities committed by the Viet Cong? Or are you ignoring that "on purpose"?
ever heard of friendly fire it happens all the time in war .and fox's character seeing everything he saw and being against it he would have been K.I.A aka killed in action
@fashizze they can prove whether or not it really was friendly fire or not. You can't think that most of them were heartless bastards cause I know if they were ever found out they'd be fucked. They didn't give a shit about the girl but once they tried to kill a fellow white boy then the big brass did something right, go figure.Soldiers have a code and if I was in the army I wouldn't allow this corruption in my platoon. Fuck that, once you become a monster your just a target to me I'd kill
Yep it was totally overlooked because it wasn't the usual flavor-of-the-day bullshit. I don't claim this is real or not real but the idea of infantry soldiers run amok isn't entirely impossible. I imagine that sort of thing did happen sometimes and probably went unreported/undocumented.
I don't know how much of this film is accurate and how much of it was manufactured by Hollywood. But even if the film is just REMOTELY accurate, it absolutely breaks my heart to think of what that poor girl must have gone through. I have never fought in a war and will be the first to admit I don't know what it's like. But no matter how dismal a situation is, it will never FORCE YOU to terrorize, rape and murder an innocent girl. These sick individuals have NO EXCUSE for what they did.
this film is only loosely based on the real life autrocity. if you want the real story, read the novel of the same name by daniel lang. there are countless differences in the novel compared to the hollywood dramatization.
Not only do we see this in war, it's also very common in "real life" that some sick mooron gets the presidency of the group. So many are just following who evers speaking loudest, like a flock of cowards.
I was talking about this in another clip. Pvt. Diaz is a product of mob menality, something that people are highly suspectible to. More then we're willing to admit. BUT he still had the option of doing the right thing and didn't. Therefore he paid for his crimes in the end.
Penn and Fox hated each other while they were making this film, SP likes to get into character fulltime - he must have been a bit touchy to work with...
