  • I can't wait for a few years from now when avatar 2 and 3 are released, and it's technology can make this look like shit. I'm only seventeen. I can't wait to see what movies like this look like in 20-30 years.

  • Filming this must have been boooo-ring.

Boy, how I envy the people to whom watching the movie was an "experience". The people who adore it and can't get enough of it. Because I feel so damn left out by having been so underwhelmed by it.

  • ZOE SALDANA!!!

  • 44 people are navi´s

  • What he meant to say was "I rewrote Pochahontas, and then i thought, Nah, too soon, and put it in a drawer for later" <- This is what he meant to say. hirhir

  • 2014 seems SOOO far away...

  • how much is the costs of this film!!!!! i didn't believe that the man an the computers can do that!

very very amazing things where we will arrive??? and why don't use this tecnology for other things like medical discovery????

  • Cameron started writing the film in 95. The exact year which an animation film was released which cameron ripped off the story from. ''pocahontas''. I mean the blue avatar creatures are very alike the Native American tribes in pocahontas, And just like the people in the animation, The People in avatar came to take away the valuable Unobtainium, In pocahontas it was gold. The forbidden romance between jake and Neytiri is also very similar to pocahontas and John Smith. Basically same story !!

  • @sawmassacre13 Hasn't it ever occurred to you that Pocahontas itself was based on history and old stories? Pocahontas was not an original story, it was a classic story that everybody already knew, the same goes for Avatar, it's not a rip-off, it's just a classic story. The difference being that for some reason people got really offended by Avatar for using this premise. I wish people would just let it go, go accuse other "unoriginal" films of being a rip off, there are plenty.

  • Comment removed

  • @sawmassacre13 I think both plotlines are way too straightforward and classic for one to be a rip-off of the other. I've seen similar storylines before Pocahontas, I've seen similar storylines after. I think Avatar just gets a lot of negative attention because it has not embellished this plot with much else (I admit, it's a very simple story to tell) and critics have become offended that a simple story like this made so much money. If you hate it so much, youtube something else.

  • I think it is amazing how ever face movement is captures and the Avatars look real. You can see the pain, love, or anger in their faces.

  • unbelievable special effects!!! thats great job cameron !! and music too!!!

  • i have to buy all this hardware

  • Zoe Saldana is very pretty. What a shame.

  • He's british!!!!

  • Titanic and Avatar, my favorite movies *-*

  • I don't care how trendy it is, too much cgi looks flat and lifeless, and pulls you out of the movie.

  • With the technology we have today NO KID should even think the word "BORED"

  • not giving this film a oscar was the biggest joke. ever.

  • @1995manutd indeed!!!

  • this is a beautifully animated, amazing movie. james cameron did a wonderful job. gotta love those "blue monkeys" ;)

  • Maybe planet like this exist somewhere in the space

  • this is soo cleaver when i first saw the movie i was like wtf how did they do tht NOW I KNOW some people in this world are just genius

  • When I was little I always dreamed of visiting Neverland and meet Peter Pan. That completely changed in 2009 when I saw Avatar - my biggest wish is to experience Pandora...

  • @CHEERleadMeUp lol im from hooland! (NeverLand)

  • @CHEERleadMeUp Funny you can do both at disney in 2013

  • @CHEERleadMeUp I feel the same way, but since 2010 I want to experience the grid.

  • @CHEERleadMeUp your about to make your wish come true! now around 2013 disney is opening an AREA of AVATAR! They even say there will be things there that wasnt seen on the movie! they will make it on animal kingdom :)

  • @CHEERleadMeUp i agree

  • @CHEERleadMeUp BITCH PLEASE. You've never heard of The Lord Of The Rings?

  • this is purely genius

  • AVATAR has pushed CGI to the next level. I want to tell something, no matter how hard they do there is something lacking because its not real. I have researched on CGI for all most 3 yrs what i found was u cant cheat real world. CGI is still in its infancy even now after avatar. There still lots to be done to make it look real. Maybe in next 100 yrs it may become possible.

  • @juki0h then do it better -.-

  • this took ten years to make? shit i can make this in a year!

  • @juki0h I shall subscribe to your channel, and will expect a video uploaded on 29/09/12 that will absolutely blow my mind.

  • @borysmilosz prepare to be amazed borysmilosz!

  • Wow that's truly amazing!

  • FUCK YOU RDA

  • 5:46 , Terry Notary who now plays Rocket in Rise of the planet of the apes.

  • Some how i feel like watching the movie now.. to try and notice all the things they Talked about .. lol

  • Tron legacy is a lot better than this!!!!!

  • ...for example. Animation is an art-form, not a "technology" that can be abused and hence should be avoided. It's people that have abused the art-form, tried to reduce it to a "technique", it's movies that push that delusion, that deserve to be derided.

    Not animation, and not animators.

Disclaimer: Not an animator myself, but I feel very VERY strongly about this.

  • ...performances by real actors on real(ish) sets was the way to go for this movie.

But movies like Beowulf, or the Polar Express, which did not NEED to be animated, which would have done an excellent job as live-action movies, are the ones that have brought this needless stigma to animation. As something that's not "good enough" to be actively used in a movie.

It's far more than good enough, it can tell entire stories and capture a beauty that live action cannot. Look at Pixar's library....

  • ..look organic, look natural and at ease with its environment. It could only be achieved through animation - animating both the characters and the environment in one go. Any other technique that tried to blend real and virtual worlds would have looked janky or hit the uncanny valley at some point. Even something as excellent as Lord of the Rings hits the uncanny valley at points - that plummetting mannequin-like thing that's supposed to be Gandalf for example. Fully motion-captured....

  • A movie like Beowulf need not have existed. Movies like The Polar Express need not have existed. These are a disgrace to animation because they chase after a pointless goal - achieving photo-realistic human rendering. If you are going to make your animated characters EXACTLY like humans, what is the point of animating at all? Avatar can be appreciated because it used techniques that were NECESSARY for the film. As Cameron said, people in blue body paint would have looked silly. It needed to..

  • ..with Half-Life 2.

And then coming to films, the other crime people commit is clubbing all "animated" films together! Are you seriously alleging that Ratatouille had less emotion or less of a performance than Avatar? That hand-done animation is somehow inferior to motion-captured stuff?

It is not, it is merely to be used in a different context. Animation techniques have for long been abused by studios trying to go for the photorealistic side of the equation, and have miserably failed at that.

  • What depresses me is when people don't look at solutions that ALREADY exist. Source had solved the emotion-in-animation problem a long time back - at least when it comes to games. And yet we have people going off and trying to build their own solutions and failing miserably. Why can't they at least learn from what has already been made, and build on TOP of that? Why do we have folks talking about the uncanny valley issue when Source had basically hit the nail on the head with respect to games.

  • anyone know what happened to the banshee he first had before he ditched it for the huge one?

  • I hate living my human life i want to be a avatar and be free

  • god, i wish pandora is real and i was an avatar v.v

  • I'd laugh at 4:05 to 4:16 ! I just couldn't look at her face and stay straight faced :P I'd fuck up the whole movie!

  • 4.04 unbeleivable acting 10/10

  • they shud make a motion capture game

  • I wonder If we could do that if we find other planets like this one and like transform or whatever would be amazing

  • I'd love to wear one of them motion suits and see my self avartised

  • awsummmmmmm print

  • awesome technology !! one thinks as its all real and he is a part of it.

  • I thought I heard them say that they liked the scene where Jake and Neytiri were flying with their banshees. I also liked that.

All in all I loved this movie. The computer graphics was top class. I really don't get why some people hated this movie much.

  • @RainGuardianArius I loved it, but I think the main reason people didn't like it is because the storyline was too, not overused, but kind of easy to read.

This stuff actually relates to real life though ;-; and I thought that the storyline was bad up until now, until someone opened my eyes and related it to real life.

  • i still cant do

  • now that the secrets out, other directors are going to be using this method too.

  • @FireKittyMist i expect they already know. All the staff will be working on other films soon after. I wouldn't expect the directors to wait for the DVD extra's to work out what tech was used.

  • if you've found the n, find the v

  • in the movie jake says "I bang so hard" like if you get it

  • @DanTheShinyHunter i think he said "Banked" didn't he? Isn't 'bank' a flying term? It means to 'turn', yeah?

Zoe's character says something like, "I turned really hard, like this "u"". and Jake replies, "Me too, I banked so hard..." Remember he told the banshi, "Level out! Now bank left!"

  • in the movie he says and i quote from jake "I bang so hard" in the scene in the banshees it was hilarious

  • 3 fucking minutes of just talking about the plot....what a boring behind the scenes

  • they didnt give the actors enough credit.. zoe should have taken home an award!!

  • @xoxoangexoxo People don't understand how Motion Capture works,is why actors don't get enough credit. The Actors performance makes the cg characters comes to life. They all did awesome job.The master of mo-cap is Andy Serkis. Gollum,King Kong and Caeser.

  • "when people say to you: tht's impossible! you say back to them: when you say that's iimpossible, you're confused with I dont know how to do it" James cameron

  • @TheOKTerrificable

Were you also reminded of Dune, Star Wars, Lawrence of Arabia, Princess Mononoke, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (aka Warriors of the Wind) and Last of the Mohicans?

  • One of my favorite movies. :D They way they captured everything so perfectly is just amazing.

  • this is SO COOOOL !!

  • Arrogant much, Mr Cameron?

  • @DJSexLeopard Here I am. Come and get me.

  • this movie is one of the best I seen in last years, there is emotion, there is power, special effects, wonderful colors, and what I appreciate is the message to us, learning listening to nature and collaborate more together instead against, in this movie there were all equal, female, male, nature and animals.... that is what should happen on planet earth... :-) cheers

  • wiked!

  • Do you know where can i download these softwares for free ?????

  • @TheTCBF wtf software are you talking about, willis?

  • @TheTCBF There's this awesome program that does the stuff you see in Avatar, the program is called Windows Movie Maker. I've been using it to make my own epic movies. Plus, I even did an Avatar sequel just for fun. It's really easy actually! They just make it sound hard, because that's how they get money, you know.

  • * Adobe Premiere (proofing, rough compositing with AE) * many tools developed in-house * countless plugins for each platform, some of them Ocula for Nuke, Ktakatoa for 3ds max, Sapphire for Combustion/AE.

The list of tools is not exhaustive and you can see there’s overlap in capabilities, depending on each company’s pipeline.

  • * The Foundry Nuke Compositor (previz image compositing) * Autodesk Smoke (color correction) * Autodesk Combustion (compositing) * Massive (vegetation simulation) * Mudbox (floating mountains) * Avid(video editing) * Adobe After Effects (compositing, real-ime visualizations) * PF Track (motion tracking, background replacement) * Adobe Illustrator (HUD and screens layout) * Adobe Photoshop (concept art, textures)

  • And here are the main software used: * Autodesk Maya (most shots) * Pixar Renderman for Maya * Autodesk SoftImage XSI * Luxology Modo (model design, e.g. the Scorpion) * Lightwave (low-res realtime environments) * Houdini (Hell’s Gate scenes, interiors) * ZBrush (creature design) * Auodesk 3ds max (space shots, control room screens and HUD renderings) * Autodesk MotionBuilder (for real-time 3d visualisations) * Eyeon Fusion (image compositing)

  • didn't know it was the real person act i though it was only computer .

  • @SweetDeath88 i thought the same thing

  • Which program do they use to make all these virtual world ?

  • @TheTCBF 3d max i think

  • @TheTCBF if that prog
