I can not understand Romanian, I'm from Brazil it's almost impossible to understand even a word in Romanian. We that speak Portuguese can understand better Spanish and Italian, about 95% of one and 85% of the other.

There are many similiar word in romanian and portuguese believe me:)!Maybe the pronunciation it's a little different in Romania!For exemple romanian it's very closed to italian,but we have some letters that does not exist in the other romance languages: ǎ,î,â,ş,ţ ! I give you some romanian word that exist in portuguese too : eu, meu, casa, petala, patria, gravida, arma etc.!

The irony is that Portuguese (especially the European pronunciation) sounds more like a Slavic language because of its pronunciaiton than does Romanian, and its geography makes many of you here to expect it to sound just like Spanish, but it doesn't.

Also, comparing Romanian with its Slavic and Hungarian neighbours is like comparing German with French and Polish: they're completely different!

Indeed as French speaking Spanish and understanding Portuguese, I can understand 75%of translation. Romanian is very close to Italian.

I'm Italian, and I think Romanian is quite similar as a language, probably more similar than Spanish. I can understand the meaning of full sentences even without really having ever studied it. Many words are extremely similar - however this is sometimes not very noticeable from the spoken part.
