@1989tdog i was also thinkin about that, but i read something, that marc foster, the director , tried to have soemthing in the movie that makes you realize if it is real or not... and thats the pants. i know.. sounds.. strange^^
You must watch ir twice, and pay attention to all details so you can understand it. Why he burnt himself, why this is happening, why the previews, think about it, it's a fantastic movie, but requires attention.
the story isn't the greatest, but it's well worth watching for the cinematography. It is itself a work of art. The most amazing scenes and transitions between scenes, and beautifully filmed.
If you are having trouble working this movie out, read 'The Bridge' by Iain Banks. You could argue the idea behind the film is a complete rip-off from that book although the 'filler' is of a different flavour and perspective...but the book would help you to understand why/how it is happening.
the movie is TOO weird I think, some moments in the movie you can't explain by the ending like other psychological movies. Not my favorite psychological movie!
@abhi5a Henry is dying after a car crash. His parents died right there. And he just imagine/invent a history in his mind (the movie) that involves the persons and sounds he is percieving before his own death.
What's the name of the funk song inside the car?? ...it's a scene were the girl says she loves the song and turns it louder... At the begining of the film.

@CrazyMistakex yes... I just watched this movie last night having never seen a trailer for it. If I'd seed this trailer, I probably never would have added it to my Netflix Queue.
This movie is definitely a psychological thriller, but it is not scary, gory or as predictable as this trailer makes it look. It is an intelligent movie with a brilliantly executed theme.
@CrazyMistakex It's not as "actiony" as the trailer shows, it's kinda more slow paced. And it IS a really good movie. I don't know what you mean by your comment, but I can safely recommend it to you. Don't expect so much of a super complicated plot though, the title says it all....
@CrazyMistakex 98% different. Anyone who liked the look of the trailer would probably be disappointed with the film. I loved it though. A refreshing change and quite ''Lynchian'.
@Bazza37 Absolutely.... This trailer kind of ruined it for me. I'm about to watch the movie and I thought I should see the trailer first. Now... I'm sure how the movie ends and very disappointed before I've even started watching it. pfff :S "Great job!! We need more trailers like this one!! Bravo!!" :X
is there anywhere I can watch this is half-decent quality on the internet WITHOUT those stupid spam quizzes? Cos a friend recommended the film and after seeing the trailer (and all the comments saying it's much better than the trailer depicts) ... I really would like to see it.
Wow, I didn't hear about this movie when it was new. I saw it on a movie channel through my cable provider, and it was a HIDDEN TREASURE! I can't believe this movie wasn't successful at the box office.
Great movie! But can anyone explain to me what does the end represent? So, was Henry just dreaming between the crash and when he woke up OR was it Sam who had those dreams? Thanky you very much for the answer. :)
In my view as a student of film, and I have rigorously studied this film, the ending is a new beginning occuring in an alternative world, and follows Surrealist principles of multiple universes occuring at the same time, the "world is just an illusion". A lot of people make the mistake I think of reducing the interpretation of McGregor as a figment of Gosling's imagination-I don't believe that's true as evidenced if you closely watch the ending footage. This is not a psycho film, it is Art.
@Str8to1too I've watched it alot myself, like, as in 15 times? I think McGregor is a representation of one side of Ryan's brain telling him "You (aka I) should stay alive because life will go on, and I will eventually get over the fact that I kind of killed my family in a crash" and Ryan is the side of himself that is thinking "No I'll never forgive myself for ending the life of my fiance & parents" and he eventually agrees with that part of himself and realises he'd be happier not living the
@JustinKwapich Bob Hoskins character states, "The Buddhists had it right all along, the world is an illusion." This, I think, is a key element to understanding this film and Surrealism. If you notice, we also see the same actors playing different roles in the film, that leads to this conclusion: There is more to what is going on in the world than what is seen. Henry's Letham (who's last name is an anagram for Hamlet (note the play in the seen being rehearsed is also "Hamlet")...
@JustinKwapich where ont he desk there sits an hourglass (seen before in another scene at Sam's apartment), which is now out of it's glass box and turned upside down. Note that Lila's necklace is an imperfect elongated oval, which speaks to the nature of Time. These themes of multiple dimensions, non-linear action, repitition, loss of vision (versus Bob Hiskins' character gaining sight through a Henry's miracle), are all key elements to understanding true Surrealism. They were very concerned..
@JustinKwapich with the "loss of vision" of their time in the wake of WWI and in the state of Art in general. The Surrealist Manifesto (the first Art movement in history to have a stated manifesto), states that the purpose of its movement was to change/stimulate the way in which people see the world through Art. Take a look at this famous film collaboration by Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali in 1929, "Un Chien Andalou" (also read up on the story of collaboration in the making of the film).
@JustinKwapich The film is SHOCKING!, even still today. "Stay" demands that you to both look and pay attention to details. Nothing is gratuitous, everthing is important. While we argued views similar to yours in class, I furvently hold that Henry and Sam are not the same person, that all of the events in the film are taking place simulataeously, and none are manifestations of Henry's imagination a the crash. The final clue is at the end, scenes that were added to the film after the final wrap
@JustinKwapich Henry's eyes are not closed as he is being loaded into the ambulance as would be expected of someone who is DOA (again, a reference to vision for the importance of the remaining scene). Sam and Lila are here meeting for the first time (although she has flashbacks of an alterantive history between them). Time is an imperfect circle that loops back over itself, recreating itself. The reference to Freud and the story told is specifically chosen as well - read about that.
@Str8to1too I agree with everything you've said, but I still can't help but believe in henry's mind he's using the psychiatrist as part of his natural instinct to want to continue on with life. And I definitely agree everything that happens in the movie is an actual event, I just took it more as his before he dies, he's having thoughts of everything that lead up to the event, and everything that could have occurred after the event if he we're to choose life over death, in which he doesn't.
@JustinKwapich In terms of the psyche, and as is played upon in the film, we all have knowledge of other people and events without being consciously aware of it. Therefore, both interpretations we have been discussing are equally valid. Freud's work "The Interpretation of Dreams" was just being in French language in the 1920's, and theSurrealists were heavily influenced. You may want to read his essay on "Canny" or "Heimlich" (German), one that includes his interpretation of "The Sandman".
@JustinKwapich In these terms, it is not hard to see that while the characters of Henry and Sam are completely separate, they are also the same; just as other actors play different characters in the film, patterns and events are repeared but diffferent, scenes seemlessly transition from one event into an entirely different related scene. On this point, and speaking of numbers, on the top of the ambulance it reads the numbers 1212, again hinting at the presence of conscious duality...
@JustinKwapich (unconscious duality) and repetitivism. I think this is exactly why the actors were called back to add the final scenes of the film months later - to reinforce this idea of multiple realities in the message of the film. If you watch quickly, the scenes that Lila recalls of Sam at the end after the agree to have coffee are not specific or actually taken from previous scenes (they relate more to the previous Freud reading on the canny and the uncanny in German lexical semantics).
@JustinKwapich Here again, this same inference to alternative time and place; but, again, all happening at once! Or, it could all just be in Henry's imagination wherein as he is dying he interprets those around him in some sort of linear story. If you take this reading of the film you have to ask yourself - Why? It's just too easy, too trite and shallow a position, I personally believe. But, it could eually be true; and, that is why so many people watched this film and went, "WTF?"
@JustinKwapich When I presented the film in our college film study "Sense of Place" (based on Lucy Lippard's work), several students said they didn't have one clue to what just happened! Others vehemently defended convictions similar to yours, which prompted me to ask, "Then, what's the meaning behind presenting that? Needless to say, the score was never setteled; but, I like complicated things and I believe this film begs for this type of scrutiny and evaluation - that's it's magnificence.
@JustinKwapich If you have this reading, you may have desribe that this is a very sad film about a tomented young artist dealing with the guilt of causing the death of his parents and girlfriend on his deathbed, who incorporates others at the scene into his final search for forgiveness. Sad. But viewing it from the perspective I put forth, it's truly an inspirational and universal story of human connectivity, parallel lives, the uncanny, and the "Big Picture" at the root of all religions, etc.
@JustinKwapich If you drop me a line at Yahoo, I will send you the film's introduction document from class which has more to think about if you would like. You make me want to watch it for the 50th time!, and I probably will. Also, check out the artist named Sonny Rollins, one of jazz's greatest musicians, whose album Leon was about to play when Henry arrived. The album is called "The Bridge" from 1962. "Your troubles will cease and fortune will smile upon you!"
@Str8to1too I love all the music in Stay, it's amazing. And I agree with everything you've said this time, glad we're definitely on the same page. It seems that most fans of this movie are missing a lot of the most interesting aspects of it. It's nice to see someone who catches things I catch. Another, more obvious thing in the movie you've probably known about is the fact that if you watch everyone in the background lots of them will be twins or triplets and it seems to me like they were trying
@Str8to1too to state that It's not just Henry/Ewan who have multiple sides of their mind constantly arguing to try finding the best solution, but nearly everyone at all times. And I don't know if you knew this but the shape of Ewan's shoes and pants are quite significant aswell... I love it! I'll definitely watch it soon through your perspective though :]
If I were to ever make one of the stories I have in mind/am going to start writing soon, into a movie, I'd want you to help direct it. I like
@JustinKwapich Sounds terrific! You gotta deal. The pants thing I didn't get until I did some research. Also, Sam apartment features bridge girdings, and the designs in the bathroom are repeated in the hospital scene, and the tile floor in Leons apartment is the repeated in the gold and black square on the glass door of the A. Smith's bookstore. The only explanation for why Lila is blocked at the gate at the end of the stairs after realizing all the portraits she has been painting...
@JustinKwapich are signed by Henry may have to do with the theories in put forth in quantum physics. I was such a proponent of the film, Surrealism, and the "uncanny", that a few days before the screening I took still images from the film, printed them out, and hung them around the halls of the college hoping that students would subconsciously see them and experience a deja vu reaction when they saw the film. But the joke was on me!
@JustinKwapich Two days after the screening, on critique day, there was a woman on campus that morning carrying a young child with a mylar balloon. I saw her that morning, but didn't realize the connection until my professor brought up her presence in critique - it became a very Surreal moment, and evidence of the "uncanny"! To really understand the term, google a full article on Freud, the canny/heimlich, and The Sandman story which he evaluates in his work.
@JustinKwapich Freud's story of the Burning Boy is also very interesting to read. Most of my studio work was in photography and short-film, but YouTube pulled several of my videos on the grounds of "improper appropriation" (read copyright infringement), and that "they violated community standards". I'm an artist, for Christ's sake! That's what we're supposed to do! Well, anyway, I pulled them all. Maybe I will try and repost them at a later date since they lost the lawsuit with Viacom.
@JustinKwapich Also, you may be interested in checking out quantum mechanics - Salvador Dali was highly interested in this subject, and was at the toor of many of his later works. It's a theory that also plays heavily in the construct of the film. OK, that's it! Thanks for a great discussion.
@Str8to1too One other thing I noticed was at some point in the movie somewhat near the final scene, there's a part where Ewan wakes up and the clock says 11:33, which seemed symbolic to me because if you look at a clock upside down that says 11:34 it spells out Hell, and seeing that henry thinks he's going to hell for what he's accidentally done, i took it as him thinking there's only about one minute of his life left before he's there. (though it's longer than the because time is very skewed)
@JustinKwapich References to other artists related to the storyline (such as Escher - the staircase) and others are made for the purpose of drawing attention to the themes of time, vision, multiples, parallel universes, the collective unconsciousness, etc. Again, this film is so multifacted and such a true work of Art, that for a student of Surrealism there are countless things to talk about. Bravo! to writer David Benioff and director Marc Forster and the cast for bringing this excellent film.
the song at the end is hey man nice shot by the band filter. Love this movie seen it a few times its one of those movies that really makes you think about things.
i watched the movie like 4 times...it awesome, its about parallel worlds and that life is an illusion, its a very deep and romantic film, artistic and just, it pulls you to it you know...it makes you watch it :D its just so fuckin interesting and beautiful...this trailer is a complete fail compared to what the whole movie looks like.
i've watched this movie twice all the way through and within like two hours of each other. can someone PLEASE explain what the hell is going on to me?
Lol excuse me but the movie is so beautiful done (the score, the visual effects) and this trailer is making it out to be this gory creepster movie. Also, lol at them showing the end in the trailer. Thank god I watched the movie without seeing the trailer.
Alguien puede decirme el nombre de la canción que se escucha al momento del accidente en el puente que empieza algo asi como "desire......". Ya chequé la OST y no doy con ella.
after watching the trailer I was thinking 'i don't wanna watch a ghost movie' but apparently you guys say the trailer sucks and the film is way different, so i'll watch it.

Bravo!!" :X

Str8to1too 11 months ago
@Str8to1too I've watched it alot myself, like, as in 15 times? I think McGregor is a representation of one side of Ryan's brain telling him "You (aka I) should stay alive because life will go on, and I will eventually get over the fact that I kind of killed my family in a crash" and Ryan is the side of himself that is thinking "No I'll never forgive myself for ending the life of my fiance & parents" and he eventually agrees with that part of himself and realises he'd be happier not living the
JustinKwapich 10 months ago
@Str8to1too Continued..... Rest of his life. he'd never forgive himself and just wanted to end it.
JustinKwapich 10 months ago
@JustinKwapich Bob Hoskins character states, "The Buddhists had it right all along, the world is an illusion." This, I think, is a key element to understanding this film and Surrealism. If you notice, we also see the same actors playing different roles in the film, that leads to this conclusion: There is more to what is going on in the world than what is seen. Henry's Letham (who's last name is an anagram for Hamlet (note the play in the seen being rehearsed is also "Hamlet")...
Str8to1too 10 months ago
@JustinKwapich where ont he desk there sits an hourglass (seen before in another scene at Sam's apartment), which is now out of it's glass box and turned upside down. Note that Lila's necklace is an imperfect elongated oval, which speaks to the nature of Time. These themes of multiple dimensions, non-linear action, repitition, loss of vision (versus Bob Hiskins' character gaining sight through a Henry's miracle), are all key elements to understanding true Surrealism. They were very concerned..
Str8to1too 10 months ago
@JustinKwapich with the "loss of vision" of their time in the wake of WWI and in the state of Art in general. The Surrealist Manifesto (the first Art movement in history to have a stated manifesto), states that the purpose of its movement was to change/stimulate the way in which people see the world through Art. Take a look at this famous film collaboration by Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali in 1929, "Un Chien Andalou" (also read up on the story of collaboration in the making of the film).
Str8to1too 10 months ago
@JustinKwapich The film is SHOCKING!, even still today. "Stay" demands that you to both look and pay attention to details. Nothing is gratuitous, everthing is important. While we argued views similar to yours in class, I furvently hold that Henry and Sam are not the same person, that all of the events in the film are taking place simulataeously, and none are manifestations of Henry's imagination a the crash. The final clue is at the end, scenes that were added to the film after the final wrap
Str8to1too 10 months ago
@JustinKwapich Henry's eyes are not closed as he is being loaded into the ambulance as would be expected of someone who is DOA (again, a reference to vision for the importance of the remaining scene). Sam and Lila are here meeting for the first time (although she has flashbacks of an alterantive history between them). Time is an imperfect circle that loops back over itself, recreating itself. The reference to Freud and the story told is specifically chosen as well - read about that.
Str8to1too 10 months ago
@Str8to1too I agree with everything you've said, but I still can't help but believe in henry's mind he's using the psychiatrist as part of his natural instinct to want to continue on with life. And I definitely agree everything that happens in the movie is an actual event, I just took it more as his before he dies, he's having thoughts of everything that lead up to the event, and everything that could have occurred after the event if he we're to choose life over death, in which he doesn't.
JustinKwapich 10 months ago
@JustinKwapich In terms of the psyche, and as is played upon in the film, we all have knowledge of other people and events without being consciously aware of it. Therefore, both interpretations we have been discussing are equally valid. Freud's work "The Interpretation of Dreams" was just being in French language in the 1920's, and theSurrealists were heavily influenced. You may want to read his essay on "Canny" or "Heimlich" (German), one that includes his interpretation of "The Sandman".
Str8to1too 10 months ago
@JustinKwapich In these terms, it is not hard to see that while the characters of Henry and Sam are completely separate, they are also the same; just as other actors play different characters in the film, patterns and events are repeared but diffferent, scenes seemlessly transition from one event into an entirely different related scene. On this point, and speaking of numbers, on the top of the ambulance it reads the numbers 1212, again hinting at the presence of conscious duality...
Str8to1too 10 months ago
@JustinKwapich (unconscious duality) and repetitivism. I think this is exactly why the actors were called back to add the final scenes of the film months later - to reinforce this idea of multiple realities in the message of the film. If you watch quickly, the scenes that Lila recalls of Sam at the end after the agree to have coffee are not specific or actually taken from previous scenes (they relate more to the previous Freud reading on the canny and the uncanny in German lexical semantics).
Str8to1too 10 months ago
@JustinKwapich Here again, this same inference to alternative time and place; but, again, all happening at once! Or, it could all just be in Henry's imagination wherein as he is dying he interprets those around him in some sort of linear story. If you take this reading of the film you have to ask yourself - Why? It's just too easy, too trite and shallow a position, I personally believe. But, it could eually be true; and, that is why so many people watched this film and went, "WTF?"
Str8to1too 10 months ago
@JustinKwapich When I presented the film in our college film study "Sense of Place" (based on Lucy Lippard's work), several students said they didn't have one clue to what just happened! Others vehemently defended convictions similar to yours, which prompted me to ask, "Then, what's the meaning behind presenting that? Needless to say, the score was never setteled; but, I like complicated things and I believe this film begs for this type of scrutiny and evaluation - that's it's magnificence.
Str8to1too 10 months ago
@JustinKwapich If you have this reading, you may have desribe that this is a very sad film about a tomented young artist dealing with the guilt of causing the death of his parents and girlfriend on his deathbed, who incorporates others at the scene into his final search for forgiveness. Sad. But viewing it from the perspective I put forth, it's truly an inspirational and universal story of human connectivity, parallel lives, the uncanny, and the "Big Picture" at the root of all religions, etc.
Str8to1too 10 months ago
@JustinKwapich If you drop me a line at Yahoo, I will send you the film's introduction document from class which has more to think about if you would like. You make me want to watch it for the 50th time!, and I probably will. Also, check out the artist named Sonny Rollins, one of jazz's greatest musicians, whose album Leon was about to play when Henry arrived. The album is called "The Bridge" from 1962. "Your troubles will cease and fortune will smile upon you!"
Str8to1too 10 months ago
@JustinKwapich And get the soundtrack - it's awesome for doing anything creative or just chillin' :)
Str8to1too 10 months ago
@Str8to1too I love all the music in Stay, it's amazing. And I agree with everything you've said this time, glad we're definitely on the same page. It seems that most fans of this movie are missing a lot of the most interesting aspects of it. It's nice to see someone who catches things I catch. Another, more obvious thing in the movie you've probably known about is the fact that if you watch everyone in the background lots of them will be twins or triplets and it seems to me like they were trying
JustinKwapich 10 months ago
@Str8to1too to state that It's not just Henry/Ewan who have multiple sides of their mind constantly arguing to try finding the best solution, but nearly everyone at all times. And I don't know if you knew this but the shape of Ewan's shoes and pants are quite significant aswell... I love it! I'll definitely watch it soon through your perspective though :]
If I were to ever make one of the stories I have in mind/am going to start writing soon, into a movie, I'd want you to help direct it. I like
JustinKwapich 10 months ago
@JustinKwapich Sounds terrific! You gotta deal. The pants thing I didn't get until I did some research. Also, Sam apartment features bridge girdings, and the designs in the bathroom are repeated in the hospital scene, and the tile floor in Leons apartment is the repeated in the gold and black square on the glass door of the A. Smith's bookstore. The only explanation for why Lila is blocked at the gate at the end of the stairs after realizing all the portraits she has been painting...
Str8to1too 10 months ago
@JustinKwapich are signed by Henry may have to do with the theories in put forth in quantum physics. I was such a proponent of the film, Surrealism, and the "uncanny", that a few days before the screening I took still images from the film, printed them out, and hung them around the halls of the college hoping that students would subconsciously see them and experience a deja vu reaction when they saw the film. But the joke was on me!
Str8to1too 10 months ago
@JustinKwapich Two days after the screening, on critique day, there was a woman on campus that morning carrying a young child with a mylar balloon. I saw her that morning, but didn't realize the connection until my professor brought up her presence in critique - it became a very Surreal moment, and evidence of the "uncanny"! To really understand the term, google a full article on Freud, the canny/heimlich, and The Sandman story which he evaluates in his work.
Str8to1too 10 months ago
@JustinKwapich Freud's story of the Burning Boy is also very interesting to read. Most of my studio work was in photography and short-film, but YouTube pulled several of my videos on the grounds of "improper appropriation" (read copyright infringement), and that "they violated community standards". I'm an artist, for Christ's sake! That's what we're supposed to do! Well, anyway, I pulled them all. Maybe I will try and repost them at a later date since they lost the lawsuit with Viacom.
Str8to1too 10 months ago
@Str8to1too your style. :P
JustinKwapich 10 months ago
@JustinKwapich Also, you may be interested in checking out quantum mechanics - Salvador Dali was highly interested in this subject, and was at the toor of many of his later works. It's a theory that also plays heavily in the construct of the film. OK, that's it! Thanks for a great discussion.
Str8to1too 10 months ago
@Str8to1too One other thing I noticed was at some point in the movie somewhat near the final scene, there's a part where Ewan wakes up and the clock says 11:33, which seemed symbolic to me because if you look at a clock upside down that says 11:34 it spells out Hell, and seeing that henry thinks he's going to hell for what he's accidentally done, i took it as him thinking there's only about one minute of his life left before he's there. (though it's longer than the because time is very skewed)
JustinKwapich 10 months ago
@JustinKwapich References to other artists related to the storyline (such as Escher - the staircase) and others are made for the purpose of drawing attention to the themes of time, vision, multiples, parallel universes, the collective unconsciousness, etc. Again, this film is so multifacted and such a true work of Art, that for a student of Surrealism there are countless things to talk about. Bravo! to writer David Benioff and director Marc Forster and the cast for bringing this excellent film.
