I have a question about the speed sensor. Is the output a unipolar square with an amplitude as high as 14V or is it something else (maybe bipolar sawtooth)? Are most cars nowadays magnetic type or Hall effect type ABS speed sensors? Can I follow the wiring up into the engine compartment? (I want to measure the signal with an o-scope) Sorry for the silly questions but I am want to acquire the signal to get speed data from it (EE project). The car I am working on is an Acura TL 2003? Thanks.
The wheel speed sensors for your 03 TL are magnetic contactless type. As the gear pulsar teeth rotate past the wheel sensor's magnetic coil, AC current is generated. The AC frequency changes in accordance with the wheel speed. Hopefully this helps.
hi man quick question, I have a Holden Barina 2006 and i keep getting the ABS light on shortly after driving , followed by the brake warning light. also when i brake sometimes i get a weird trembling noise that i can feel on the pedal. and last week i noticed that the speedometer needel sticks sometimes. happened to me 2 times. it sticks on a reading even when i apply brakes it takes few seconds to realize that I have slowed down. what could be the problem ?? please help i'm desperate
i got a 1997 Mazda b3000 the speedometer doesn't work sometimes if i bang on the dash it works for a few seconds i took apart the speedometer and see if it was a loose connection put it all back together and still the same problem i have no idea what's wrong. And note the check engine light is on
on my 97 f150 (4x4) the ABS light was always on until one day the light turned off, it didn't burn out because it still turns on once i turn the key (as every other light), but now my speedometer isn't marking the correct speed. what could it be?
@canobd2 Also if you think it's the ABS sensor how do you know which one ? i read few threads on the internet and they all mentioned the rear ones. why is that ?
and i know this might sound stupid but is the abs sensor and the speed sensor the same thing ? or they are 2 different things ? please help me :(
@canobd2 well i have a 03 mazda i broke the electrical connector to that harness so i striped the wire and tried hard wiring the sensor to the harness but did not work what is the harness exactly called do you know
I would trace that wiring harness, you might get lucky and find out that it is only two or three feet long with a connector on the other end, if that is the case you can replace it. Good luck!
Man I got a 1999 Silverado speed sensors are screwed hit a pine tree at my house today going about 6mph, the ABS fires at lw speed, theres a recall out on it but mine doesnt qualify because I had aftermarket hubs I guess (previous owner) so I just pulled the 10amp fuse in the fuse box near the drivers door, no more ABS but also no more low speed crashes. I'll NEVER buy GM again
Very nice video. I have a problem with my 2006 Ford Ranger 4x4 anti lock brakes. The anti-lock pump almost always comes on at speeds under 5 MPH while braking. Fluid is full and rear shoes are adjusted, no codes or check engine lights ever come on. The pump comes on causing the truck to pull to the right when almost stopped. TY!
I would check for a sticking brake clipper and or leaking wheel cylinder. I know you said that the rear shoes were adjusted, however if not adjusted correctly this can cause your problem. Good luck!
I have an Oldsmobile Alero 2000 and I got my "ABS" and "Service Vehicle Soon" lights on. I took it to the mechanic and he said it is the front left ABS sensor but we need to replace the wheel bearing. Is it true that the whole bearing needs to be replaced or I could just do what you did?
I would recommend you taking you vehicle to your local shop and have them check it out (you might have ABS codes) and go from there. When your ABS light is on the braking system goes back to conventional braking.
Hitting a bump in the road should not cause your wheel speed sensor to go bad, you should check for any ABS codes and go from there. You might have a bad wire connection somewhere.
Yes, this is the same basic repair procedure that you would perform on your 2003 BMW. Torque specs for speed sensor is 80(9) Inch Lbs. (N.m.) and wheel lugs 81-96 (110-130) FT. Lbs.(N.m.). Good Luck!!

Replacing the wheel speed sensor in your Supra should be straight forward remove the bolt and pull out the sensor (you might want to try rotating the sensor as you remove it).
Great video...my Blue Point diagnostic tool has ABS but not for my 1998 Mercedes CLK 320, how common are the ABS faults related to wheel speed sensors.
I took my 2007 Honda CRV into repair a few weeks ago and they did shock replacements for my car. The ABS sensor lights came on AFTER the repair but the repairman said he would take care of it and it would be no problem. I took it back now hes charging me 300$ for the parts. Is there any way HE could have damaged the sensor during the original shock replacement?
Yes, there is a chance your ABS sensor was damaged during your shock (strut) replacement. Note; the front ABS sensor(s) need to be unbolted from the strut in order to remove the strut; $300.00 sounds like a lot of money for an ABS wheel speed sensor. Good Luck!!
i have a chevy blazer 1999 do you know were the sensors are located and the abs light turns on and the ac/heater doeasnt work and the windows wont open or close
There is no special procedure for replacing the tires on your Suburban, just don't damage the sensors while removing or installing the tires. A good tire store should have no problem with replacing your tires.
there is two type of abs systems in your truck one for rear abs only if that is the case the sensor is located on top of the differential pumpkin but if is four wheel abs they are located on the steering knuckle on each front wheel behind the bearings and only one one on the rear brakes in the same spot as the first system i hope this help
If your ABS light is not on then you probably do not have a wheel speed sensor problem. As far as there being one speed sensor per wheel no this is not the case some cars only use three. Good Luck!!
STP Brake Parts Cleaner assists in the prevention of uneven braking, noise and chattering by quickly dissolving and washing away lining dust, brake fluid, oily road film and grit to leave brake surfaces clean, without disassembly, and also can be used with clean your wheel speed sensor by open the speed sensor scart of cable connection which is near of wheel base for all, almost time problem came from cables scart lose!

The front wheel speed sensor for your 2000 Alero is a part of the bearing assembly, so your mechanic is correct.
