I personally think all of this is just Jennifer starting to grow up. She starts out pretty weak-willed and unable to even stand up for herself, but at the end she finally stands up for herself and is better because of it. Meh, I think it's a coming of age story just told in a very fucked up way. Like, she needed to go through those memories in order to move on with her life.
