Dedicated to my first ever friend we never lived on farms, but we grew up in the highlands, Scotland.... I think of this song every time I go back. RIP.
grandpa died and my ass hole uncle got the farm i spent my life there as he raised me with my grandmother he left the farm when he fell sick i cared for him and he died in his bed now im not welcome there and its my home
I feel so sorry for those who can listen to this song and feel nothing. I lost my Dad in '09 to cancer. We had to sell off part of the family farm to pay for his hospital bills. I'm working my butt off to try to buy it back. This song makes me sad, angry, proud and determined every time I hear it.
@d82277 Good luck, hope you make it - Steve Earle continues to defy everybody to pigeon hole him. He's been great at every style of music he's played. His early rock stuff was some of the best you can listen to (Back To The Wall ect), bluegrass, folk, country-rock, even the one-off reggae Johnny Too Bad was great. I went to see Steve in Cardiff, Wales last year - he said he was coming back with Alison & The Dukes this year. Can't wait. As I said, good luck getting your land back.
Watch carefully when you click on the other songs over there on the right... if it says Vevo in the artist line, avoid it like the plague. It forces you to watch a commercial before getting to his video.... and I doubt very seriously he gets any money for it. Just another example of Google whoring out good music for commercial gain.
@comicguitar No, but google get money for those advertisements being at the beginning of a song that Steve Earle wrote/preformed, and is the sole reason of someone going to that video.
I've bought this CD at least 6 times... as soon as one would get scratched, I would go buy another. Thank God that we have a singer like Steve Earle!!
@doddling I don't think even he'd agree with you. And keep in mind, if you haven't made mistakes you haven't explored boundaries. But if you mean his music is consistently enjoyable, I come pretty close to agreeing with you.
@andrewshere . I love you for sharing me the news of such a wonderful artist (Justin Townes Earle). Thank you! If you have not heard of Waylon's son Shooter, check HIM out too.
@scottanderika8180 And a big thank you to you too! I've just got through listening to Shooter Jennings sing "4th of July" - he's fantastic. Gonna go back and listen to some more now. Thanks again :-)
@Rousczar This song takes my breath away and brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. Right now, this very day/week/month, it hits too close to home. I wonder how it can be sung without a quavering voice.
@GreenGator94 I feel the same way. I think this was the first song of his I ever heard. It's always made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up because it's so beautiful and every time I hear it it makes me want to cry my eyes out for some reason! It's one of my all time favourite songs. :-))
steve earle inspires me everytime i hear him, his son justin has a great song called harlem river blues
