I was in Yanni's orchestra. It is important that you flutists realize there is no true correct technique. Whether you're comfortable holding the flute at a slant or completely parallel is up to the player. Both postures are completely acceptable. Pitch differs as well, whether you're using a pure silver flute or a sterling flute. Nickel is the lowest grade, I suggest avoiding it.
Use your muscles for classical and diaphragm for jazz. Thank you for your demo Sarah. I commend you.
Geez, all you pseudo-experts really enjoy bashing her, don't you? Listen, even if what she says doesn't go with what you've learned or what you've picked up off of the internet, it doesn't mean it's wrong. It depends on who your teacher is or who the advice giver is. There are a thousand and one ways to go about even the most basic concepts of playing. Each person, each teacher, and each school of thought is different.
"all the people from expert village are EXPERTS! They always have bright faces, and are very enthusiastic! They just know how to make newcomers feel welcome! Need to know how to do something? Click on Expert Village today!" ... or so they say. I know what expert village should add to their channel: how to not suck.
You do not produce vibrato with your throat. This can interrupt your airstream and create tension where there should be freedom. Vibrato comes from the air itself- controlled by... guess what... the diaphragm. It is not advisable to use the muscles of the mouth to create vibrato, either, in most schools of thought; however, it is not unheard of.
Either there is an excessive amount of trolls on youtube nowadays or you guys just need to stop being so negative. Seriously... not everybody is going to play the damn instrument the same exact way. Don`t diss the way she plays it just because it doesn`t work for you.
your tongue is only supposed to hit the roof of your mouth. and if you want to give proper lessons try to talk about how wide you aperture should be if you playing a low note it should be wide and you should be blowing warm air if high it should be small and blowing cold air.
i should have listened 2 this in the beginning of the year now i'm pretty good at playing the flute! i have a concert May 5 at Dunckel Middle School!!!
I've been playing flute for 1 1/2 years and I'm 4th chair in my high school's middle band. One thing I realized is that I can't control my air and sound. Its not that im aggresive at playing, im just too loud "/ Can someone please give me advice? :)
i did not know how much skill went into fluting I just starting listing when I ran across a 10 year old girl playing Emma keep up the work there are lots of people that know nothing about it and want to learn
Im a beginner, Ive been playing for not too long and I started in the 8th grade. I am still in the 8th grade and can play 8th grade music. Shes actually not bad, just a bit airy. Sounds like she didnt warm up. You guys can all stop your bitching now. Its not that hard once you get the embouchure down. Plus the fingerings. Jesus.
i'm began playing the flute today and i can't make the low sound. How do i do that with a beginners flute (i think thats what i have)? and also i cant get my fingers right... does it matter if i'm left handed?? PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!
@LaQuashaDanYae44 You mean you can only produce higher sounds? Some people naturally do that. Sound is high when when you blow sort of "upwards", so to get get the lower notes you need to alter the direction of the air lower. Do you tense your mouth much when you play? Try to relax it. It'll come when you keep trying. And when you can't get your fingers right do you mean you don't know their actual positioning?
It's SPELLED vibrato. How you pronounce it really depends on where you're from. For example, I'm from Jersey and oftentimes we don't pronounce the letter T properly.
Tonguing is needed all the time unless a slur is in the sheet music or exercise. Vibrato isn't taught well here for beginners. It need's to be taught in time.
@rockyworldsbesthorse I've been playing for about a year now and I could teach the flute so much better than she can! She is taking extremely long and dramatic breaths in one of her other videos. She isn't an 'expert' that has been playing for '11 years' she is an actor that got a script put in front of her and a flute.
I love how the caption calls "tounging", "timing". <.< This really helped me. /sarcasm I'm a beginning flute student who wanted to learn something about tounging(switching from trumpet is somewhat awkward)... this didn't help in the slightest.
@DoReMiMiFaSoLaTi Get a decent teacher who will give you guidance ....there are a few good sites on utube. a beginner should not worry too much about the tongue...concentrate on getting a good embuchure and try to produce a good sound.
If your teacher has a poor sound ..you should probably look for another!
Hi there! Here are some things to learn before misinforming any more hopeful students:
1. Your stomach should never be used in playing an instrument. The acid isbad for your teeth, the instrument, and the air quality. Use that only for digesting food.
2. Using your diaphram to pulse the air results in tremolo, not vibrato.
3. Subtitles are for those who don't understand the speaker's language or can't hear the audio track. Which one applies to this English video with examples that must be heard?
That kind of subtitles are for those who can understand english, but not using it their first language. As its easier for them to read rather than to hear different accents, smart ass...
Ok...so just to set the record straight...tonguing is NOT a break between a note, it just simply seperates the notes. The reason is because you are not stopping the flow of air as you would if you did a staccato. Tonguing and slurring do differ because slurring is when you keep the notes connected, while tonguing is when you seperate them. Check out Boiling Springs Marching Band and you'll see how REAL flutes play!! lol Lesson Learned: DON'T listen to expertvillage....
heyyyy sarah! i have a suggestion for you! it'll help alot! how about...LEARN HOW TO PLAY THE FLUTE PROPERLY! but then again, you're from expertvillage...expertvllage sucks so much it makes wikipedia look like the most reliable thing EVER.

Only in staccato is there a real break. Otherwise, the tongue moves over the stream of air while you are blowing.
Search: "James Galway" and listen to his playing. When you have become such an accomplished professional, come back and tell us about tonguing. Think about double- and triple-tonguing: is it really a break between notes? And... "Glitter", dear : learn to opine without stooping to insult people. It will do you well in life.
that vid. needs a diffrent title! abd she goes was to fast, plus, expert village, really, she is so not an expert, and if she would she would be famous, nt spendng all of her day making videos
I didn't hear much of a difference between the slurring and the articulation. IMO, the use of vibrato is way too advanced for beginners, and vibrato should have a more open sound/spin to it, rather than just air "pulses." That way more tone colors are produced. This is something that is very difficult for a beginner to understand and achieve. It often takes several years for a beginner to get to that point, so vibrato may not be a good topic to cover at this point.
she's from expertvillage, what do you expect? competency? expertvillage is actually ironic since NONE of those people are actual experts...they're fucking idiots.
Okay, I'm wanting to join the band in high school (I'm going into 8th grade, so I have some time) and I have NO idea what I'm doing. If anyone has any videos they recommend I watch to help me learn the flute, that would be greatly appreciated.
you should watch nina perlove's flute lesson videos (right here on youtube) if you're looking for vidoes. but the best way to leard is to do it yourself. join band in your Jr.Highschool.
im a sophomore in high school playing the flute, and band is great!!!!! marching is hard ,tho. U should watch nina perlove's vids. definitely watch the vibrato one!!!!!! if u get that mastered... u could be the best one in ur high school. unlucky 4 me, cuz theres a girl who's really good, and i can never beat her... but yeah def. join hs band, and good luck!!!!!!
This video, like ALL of Sarah Noah's videos, is a TRUE JOKE! Her information is almost ENTIRELY INACCURATE and her terminology is incorrect to say the least! DON'T LISTEN TO HER!
i play clarinet but my teacher wants me 2 play a flute in grade 8 but im not that good at clarinet and my paraents wont give me lessons so should i switch?
Hey, I play sax in band and for some reason I got a flute for my birthday. My response was "Hell, why not." so.... why do you have to make this look so easy! hahaha
Might you make a video for people who already know how to read music and just need to focus on flute fingerings? Perhaps you have one and I just dont' see it....
Rent a flute and take a few lessons during the summer, to see if you like it. If you don't want to switch, that's perfectly fine. Remain with the instrument you're most comfortable with.
damn i still need help on how to position my mouth because when ever i blow, squeaky noise come out.just started playing. Some one HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what my teacher taught me 8 yrs ago that has always worked is. close your lips and make the shape of an "M" a little tighter than u normally wud say it. place your lips right in the center of the tone hole keeping that shape, and roll out a little to wear about a 3rd or ur lips is covering the hole and blow softly but steady across the hole, not into it.
Oh ok thanks. yeah i posted that when i just started playing it but, i'm a whole lot better now. All u have to do is practice. oh and soory that i took a while to reply back..
OMG! I have a concert in like 3 weeks and I dont even know how to play the flute!!! I get confused when playing a song.... I got the notes stuck in my head... GGG Aflat Aflat GGG...
im a flute player for about 3 months and what she teaches is probably some of the worst x.x if u do need help ask someone that u no that has played or has experience getting help from someone that u dunno and that is on the computer is probably the worst ever Keep up the work and dont quit flute is a hard insturment but it get fun later TRUST ME! lol ask me for questions if needed :D
She doesn't make it sound complicated. If you can't get a sound out of your flute you're probably blowing too hard, not hard enough, or you don't have your lips correctly placed over the hole. Trust me, i've been playing flute for like six years now and i play in the marching band at my high school. It's amazing and you'll never want to put it down once you get the hang of it. It's really not all that difficult, so don't give up!
i think ur flute has like a loose screw get a instrument repairer 2 have a look at it 4 u and u can c if thats right. or otherwise ur not blowing in hard enough like my e flat is airier then all my other notes u just gotta blow harder
Ugh, the girl in the video makes everything so damn complicated. It's quite simple to blow on the flute. Just make a small hole between your lips and blow, point the air downward by putting your upper lip a bit more out more than your bottom lip, and put your bottom lip touching the edge of the hole on the headjoint with the upper lip right above the hole facing forward.
You're not supposed to tongue on the back of your teeth...tongue on the ridge of your mouth

Okay, I'm wanting to join the band in high school (I'm going into 8th grade, so I have some time) and I have NO idea what I'm doing. If anyone has any videos they recommend I watch to help me learn the flute, that would be greatly appreciated.
katherineXwasXhere 2 years ago 5
you should watch nina perlove's flute lesson videos (right here on youtube) if you're looking for vidoes. but the best way to leard is to do it yourself. join band in your Jr.Highschool.

CandyBabeRaye 2 years ago
Hey, I play sax in band and for some reason I got a flute for my birthday. My response was "Hell, why not." so.... why do you have to make this look so easy! hahaha
Might you make a video for people who already know how to read music and just need to focus on flute fingerings? Perhaps you have one and I just dont' see it....
thanks. = )

I am in the band at my school~ and I play the french horn but my band director wants me to move to flute! So should i?
AZMUss0 2 years ago
well it depends. you can try the flute and if you like that more you should switch.
LochnessMonsterx 2 years ago
Rent a flute and take a few lessons during the summer, to see if you like it. If you don't want to switch, that's perfectly fine. Remain with the instrument you're most comfortable with.

what my teacher taught me 8 yrs ago that has always worked is. close your lips and make the shape of an "M" a little tighter than u normally wud say it. place your lips right in the center of the tone hole keeping that shape, and roll out a little to wear about a 3rd or ur lips is covering the hole and blow softly but steady across the hole, not into it.
bffw88 3 years ago
u dont kno ur embouchure yet that mean ur mouth formation^^
you shoukd try getting enough air but dont blow to much or just find the right spot^^
dont worry im a beginner *6th grader*

I got a test in days
on the flute and if I don't practice my band teacher said he'll fail me
it's kinda funny he said "your the first flute in history I very got that is on a grade 7 level"
I don't know shit on the flute and I'm playing in a High school band lol
SimplyChr15 3 years ago
think of your lower gaw pushing out(no not litteraly)
try to blow straight
one tip blow at your finger
try to blow cold air
that my best awsner I've been playing for 3 years now
but I don't practice the flute at all
I'd go get tips by "kangphiroo"
SimplyChr15 3 years ago
im a flute player for about 3 months and what she teaches is probably some of the worst x.x if u do need help ask someone that u no that has played or has experience getting help from someone that u dunno and that is on the computer is probably the worst ever Keep up the work and dont quit flute is a hard insturment but it get fun later TRUST ME! lol ask me for questions if needed :D
kangphiroo 3 years ago
i think shes ok not 2 bad. and yea i've been learning for 2 yrs and im not as good as her. she gets a nice sound out
spice96lover 3 years ago
this is kinda complicated i like the recorder kinda better
skatershadowz 3 years ago
She doesn't make it sound complicated. If you can't get a sound out of your flute you're probably blowing too hard, not hard enough, or you don't have your lips correctly placed over the hole. Trust me, i've been playing flute for like six years now and i play in the marching band at my high school. It's amazing and you'll never want to put it down once you get the hang of it. It's really not all that difficult, so don't give up!
dragonfire00107 3 years ago
OMG my flute will do like every note except F
i freakin hate playing flute but sometimes it is fun
thegymnastgirl 3 years ago
i think ur flute has like a loose screw get a instrument repairer 2 have a look at it 4 u and u can c if thats right. or otherwise ur not blowing in hard enough like my e flat is airier then all my other notes u just gotta blow harder
spice96lover 3 years ago
Ugh, the girl in the video makes everything so damn complicated. It's quite simple to blow on the flute. Just make a small hole between your lips and blow, point the air downward by putting your upper lip a bit more out more than your bottom lip, and put your bottom lip touching the edge of the hole on the headjoint with the upper lip right above the hole facing forward.
Hope this helps anyone confused o_o
