A bit weird, but a great game nonetheless - and very hard to beat! I managed to get to the castle back in the day, but failed to finish the game. I should brush off the dust and fire it up again sometime. If you haven't tried it, please do!
I loved this game as a kid. The music in it was fucking epic...better than a lot of music you hear in even the current video games. I wouldn't be surprised if Assassin's Creed got inspiration from this game.
The only thing I hated about NES games is that you had to LEAVE to power on or stay up all night to finish a game because they didn't have a SAVE feature on the early consoles. Genesis was just as bad.
Short answer: I have no idea; Long answer: This game was developed by Rare who are now owned by Microsoft, but the game was published by Acclaim, so they could also be the owners of the W&W IP (intellectual property), but when Acclaim went bankrupt in 2005, everything they own (including even their trademark on the name "Acclaim") was sold at auction, so god only knows who actually owns the rights to this game. If it is Microsoft, however, it'll never be on any Nintendo VC.
@gigaty123 I remember back in 1991/92 I used to visit my cousin's house every friday night and 'sleep over' when in fact I would play this game ALL night, it was that addictive!!
I have played this game way more than I like to admit!! There is only thing I have never figured out.....can anyone please tell me what the hell the "blue horn" does???
@gigaty123 Dude you must be young if you dont remember this game lol One of the best games on NES they ended up making more parts to this game to I know a site you can go to to play nes games
@gigaty123 1 of the greatest platform games ever.considering the time/technology/story/gameplay/music. nes hit a homerun with this game.cult like following and very addictive to play/beat. glad i was 15 y/o 20 years ago when i played this. very nostalgic time and game.
@gigaty123 its an aquired the taste. the attack and controls in general are awkward. i remember playing through it as a kid and hating it at first but enjoying it more and more as the game progressed.
Holy crap, I have been looking for this game for years but couldn't remember what it was called. I used to play it at my cousin's house when I was a little kid.
The thing I remember most about this game was the near "pop song" that started playing after you got a potion. We'd always wished there were more to the song.
I was pissed off at Rare and Acclaim for their putting useless items, such as the Cloak of Darkness, in the game. I was going to write them, but they apparently found the Necktie of No e-mail Address.
Too cool. This does bring back a flood of memories... for some reason the thing that stuck with me about this game through the years was the colors. Something about them gave this game life. Thanks for posting this.
@MARDLtransmit After reading your comment, I know and can relate with exactly what you mean. Its hard for me to remember clearly, but I do know I remember liking how the bright blues and pinks offset the forest color. It was genius.
The first levels are great, but the last levels make no sense. The enemies just keep coming, there's no sense even evading them, just have to go through :)
This was my game. I remember playing this, back in 87'. There was a lot of going in and out of the trees and bumping into treasure chest. Can't quite remember the ending, but remembered the game.
Which is exactly why I don't even own next-gen consoles. The last system I bought was Wii (for the Virtual Console) and before that... A PS1. No joking. I hate next-gen games. World Of Warcraft isn't even a game in my book. I watch videos online and it's a fucking shitstorm. It's so chaotic and I don't understand how anyone can enjoy it. Gimme an NES controller and Journey To Silius or Little Nemo: The Dream Master. I'll be satisfied.
1:30 and 3:08 inside the tree, that tune has one of the most melancholic yet calming short melodies, i've ever heard in my life. It's mesmerizing, i used to play it on the piano as a child, it just caught my ear the first time I heard it, and to this day still sticks with me. This game brings back alot of good memories, video games especially have great artistic value and an appreciation for music, they also provide for great reading, no kid should ever grow up with out a favorite Video game.
@MrGrevy@MrGrevy Go fuck a horse, fag-boy. You can't even step outside without having a panic attack. You lack depth and intellect, may as well hang yourself since you can't even stand up straight with proper posture. I see Osteoperosis has affected your brain too. Learn how to look a man in his eyes and put more bass in your voice before you fuck with a genius, you old racist narcissist. I should rape your daughter, bitch. Keep fuckin' with me. LOL!! :)
@poeticpisces2007 I agree especially the nintendo games like zelda, super mario bros. and blaster master(My FAV.) The electronic tunes and sound effects mesh so well together and even though the graphics aren't as spiffy as there now I still love playing the old games. I also remember some games had special codes or select que's so you could listen to the music of each level. Cool features like that are pretty much non existent now days.

YEEEEEEEEEESSSS!
I had an NES when I was really young.
i gave it away to my older cousin when the Playstation came out (I was younger than 6)
I recently got a PSP and modded it with Emulators. This is one of the games I had back then. I loved it but didn't remember much.
I went through the entire list of every NES game ever made til I got to this game.
You can guess by the fact that this begins with a W that it took quite a while.
I think it was worth it.
PSP NES emulator, here I come.
