@mandimobscene100 I'm just in my mid-twenties now, so my exposure was never going to be firsthand. But his music speaks to me in a way that not much else has in my life. Even his solo output (which is my favorite period although by then he was clearly going through limbo) is amazing in my opinion. It's very satisfying how things flow together in some at times incoherant way.
I know you may get alot of mislead guidance with music nowadays.

early pink floyd (before AHM) is full of life and a sort of rejoice at life. AHM changed the band somewhat. after that they became a VERY good band in terms of technical ability, and focused on some more melancholic themes. Neither is better in my opinion, but i feel that th e loss of Sid was the loss of that feeling of young exuberance. In contrast, the loss of Sid was basically the gain of gilmour (with a bit in between). Gilmour+Floyd= some of the best guitar of all time.
Why did they just do there pop songs on the bbc ? What a shame they did not do some strange sounding stuff too. Just covers from piper. I read that a whole show from 66 was recorded at the marquee club. Also the Thompson recording studios still owns 66 era Stoned Alone and a couple other early tracks still unheard. There was a legal battle over the songs with Pete Jenner ,but I guess he lost. There was also a color version of interstellar overdrive done for CBC TV when they went color in 67.
To clarify: On Piper Rick duets with Syd on "Astronomy Domine" (listen especially to the last line) and sings lead on the first two verses of "Mathilda Mother". He also sings a lot of harmony vocals- one can clearly hear his voice in the rising harmonies of "Chapter 24". Syd sings the lead on "Flaming", and even the most prominent harmonies seem to be by him.
I'm pretty sure "Live at the BBC" means it was recorded live in a studio, so it would have good quality but with a live feel to the playing. Lots of bands did "live in studio" back then, Led Zeppelin released two discs full of BBC recordings back in the early 90s.
@RCAvhstape I'm not even sure how completely 'live' this is, since I can clearly hear two separate Syd vocals at one point ("Streaming through the starlit skies"). So there are overdubs. On the other hand, the same is true of many 'live' recordings.
@darkincinerater - It's possible...I generally have no trouble telling the two voices apart, but there parts of "Remember A Day" where Rick sounds a lot like Syd (unless it is Syd!). On the other hand, how does one explain the double-tracked Syd vocals throughout? It could be ADT, except that at around 0:55 in there is a word-clash between the two vocal tracks.
It's worth noting that by the following year Fairport Convention was doing overdubs in their BBC sessions.
@amtlpaul I see your point but listen to he original there is word clashes in there. I'm not saying that he didn't overdub i'm just not saying he did.
Screaming through the star lit skies,Travelling by telephone When you realise that floyd went into abbey road studios in feb,67 in studio 2 when the beatles were still recording sgt peppers in studio 3 just goes to show what a brilliant and way ahead of his time syd barrett was' music wise'.I think if syd would have stayed on an even keel he would've been the best songwriter 'ever' (DEFINATELY)
friggin brilliant ive been studying syds floyd for the last 5 yearsand this is the 1st time ive heard this THE PINK FLOYD as they were called then, were way ahead of their time. Flaming is my favorite song on piper, but to hear it live with syd-b on vocals was great. Whoever posted this in has posted a masterpiece. The best live song on youtube for me GReattttttt
@scottudell Please allow me to disagree, kind sir. As one from the younger generations its was through that pretension that I'm here enjoying this now. Without it and without Tom Waits...
@MatsEP David Gilmour is a great musician, but I don't really think musicality was what the songs called for. Syd was allways looking at things from an artistic perspective, and that was what came out in his music. No need for conplex phrasings or technical prowess, just work with the sounds alone and create a visual feed with your musical output.
Why does it all got to be so terribly loud? For me, frankly, its too loud. I just can't bare it. I happened to have grown up with the string quartet which is a bit softer. So, uh, why does it got to be so loud?

Flaming is a brilliant song. And the quality is amazing. It sounds like it could be the record. obviously, it is slower and no harmonies, but very, very well done
This was an excellent video along with this BBC version of Flaming which I had never heard. Christ, thats live? sounded excellent. I always considered Flaming Syds equal to Strawberry fields forever by the Beatles.

Of course, you got to be very careful with the hallucinogens. Need a lot of respect, but there's no eartly reason u need to go insane as a result. Sanity & health are the first priority- from there we can live valuable lives.

Or does this creativity and devotion spawn from something else. LSD? need I say more.
The quality of this recording is wonderful compared to some that have surfaced but it's the performance that gets me. This is obviously not the 'Piper' version of the song but it's hard to guess whether this came before or after the studio session. The arrangement is even more lovely and fresher sounding with different instrumentation. I would say that this rates up there with, 'In the Beechwoods' as another gem - and they're still being dicovered after 40 years too!
@5Beatle Yes, it was recorded in September 1967, shortly after Piper came out.
The production on this version is less overwhelming, revealing the simple beauty of the song. I especially love the piano part (thanks Rick!), although Syd does get the words wrong.
@amtlpaul Does he what! I hadn't noticed as his vocals sound superb but he gets the words so very wrong. Gilmour famously botched the lyrics in the recordings of Flaming that have surfaced. I wonder if it was in tribute to Syd's effort here.
The sound is amazing! I had a bootleg of this but it was terrible sound quality. This is the best quality I've ever heard of the bbc sessions. Are the other 3 songs from this session also available?
Yes, I just read that too. Does that mean the the original tapes survived and in fact were not destroyed as I had read several years ago? I'm so confused when I read that. I clearly remember reading that all BBC sessions were lost and only shitty radio recording were available.
By 25/09/67, Syd must have been ... well ... difficult to work with. hmm, I am Syd's biggest fan, so don't flame me, but isn't this just the Piper version??? And before you flame me again, I don't think anyone has covered a Syd song that was better than his and his voice is my fave!
It's definitly NOT the Piper Version. Just play both versions one after the other. I think Piper has a flute at the beginning and this one has an organ at the beginning.
then to flame myself, this is another stellar performance from Syd; perhaps a moment where the others saw his best and then couldn't understand why he was fading... His vocals here are superb.
god bless you John Peel, and god bless you Syd BArrett. I can't believe the quality of this, and can't believe the floyd at the bbc hasn't been issued on CD. What's wrong with those heads at the BEEB?
Thanks for posting this. I already commented a few months ago on the amazing sound quality. Will you post Set the Controls and Reaction in if you have them? The quality of this recording is wonderful compared to some that have surfaced but it's the performance that gets me. This is obviously not the 'Piper' version of the song but it's hard to guess whether this came before or after the studio session. The arrangement is even more lovely and fresher sounding with different instrumentation. I would say that this rates up there with, 'In the Beechwoods' as another gem - and they're still being dicovered after 40 years too!

I think they had recorded it after they had recorded Piper.
5Beatle 3 years ago
@5Beatle Yes, it was recorded in September 1967, shortly after Piper came out.
The production on this version is less overwhelming, revealing the simple beauty of the song. I especially love the piano part (thanks Rick!), although Syd does get the words wrong.
amtlpaul 1 year ago
@amtlpaul Does he what! I hadn't noticed as his vocals sound superb but he gets the words so very wrong. Gilmour famously botched the lyrics in the recordings of Flaming that have surfaced. I wonder if it was in tribute to Syd's effort here.

The sound is amazing! I had a bootleg of this but it was terrible sound quality. This is the best quality I've ever heard of the bbc sessions. Are the other 3 songs from this session also available?
sammy1324 3 years ago
Yep, there now available on the new version of Have You Got It Yet. Maybe I'll post them.
But I heard that BBC has now opened its archives for EMI. We'll see.
5Beatle 3 years ago
Yes, I just read that too. Does that mean the the original tapes survived and in fact were not destroyed as I had read several years ago? I'm so confused when I read that. I clearly remember reading that all BBC sessions were lost and only shitty radio recording were available.
sammy1324 3 years ago
I think, an engineer had them. When John Peel died, he brought them back and they played it as a tribute to Peel.

By 25/09/67, Syd must have been ... well ... difficult to work with. hmm, I am Syd's biggest fan, so don't flame me, but isn't this just the Piper version??? And before you flame me again, I don't think anyone has covered a Syd song that was better than his and his voice is my fave!
twcox 3 years ago
It's definitly NOT the Piper Version. Just play both versions one after the other. I think Piper has a flute at the beginning and this one has an organ at the beginning.
5Beatle 3 years ago
then to flame myself, this is another stellar performance from Syd; perhaps a moment where the others saw his best and then couldn't understand why he was fading... His vocals here are superb.

yes ok ;)
I was wondering(just for curiosity) the last concerts of pink floyd with syd on board are they available on video?
Vatnsaeta 3 years ago
There's a rumour that there are some clips, but nobody has ever seen them...
The last video with the Floyds or of Syd in general is the Jugband Blues video and a short snippet from Christmas on Earth, or something like that.
5Beatle 3 years ago
christmas on earth?
is that the name of the song?
but the last recorded(video) concerts with pink floyd ain't that jugband blues?
Vatnsaeta 3 years ago
Christmas on earth was a festival.

god bless you John Peel, and god bless you Syd BArrett. I can't believe the quality of this, and can't believe the floyd at the bbc hasn't been issued on CD. What's wrong with those heads at the BEEB?

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Quite a rare version of the song. Not quite a great song whatsoever, but indeed one of Barret's best. Later Floyd always better of course.
LYMBO2006 3 years ago
yes, syd couldn't quite get that heavy leaden sound that some prefer to light and glimmering.
