I was there for that race and I can tell you man it was freekin' awesome! Those turbo cars just screamed down the straights and through the turns. Some of the best racing I've ever seen.
1990: Juan Manuel Fangio II won. I was a worker at corner #1A. I still have the missing left rear corner of John Paul Jr's NISSAN GTP. The team wanted the rear wing back, because it was repairable (I was the guy who retrieved it from the middle of the street). The Ferrari crash & fire was also in 1990. Al Holbert, Jr's final race win was in San Antonio in 1987. Good days, indeed...
In my copy of the 1990 SAGP program the event organizers placed a letter of explanation/apology for limiting general attendence ticket availbility due to an overwhelming number of attendees in the previous year and resultant overcrowding in the paddock and along the fenceline.
I have the complete race on Video Tape /ESPN.. Johnny 1990 IMSA where the driver hit the wall head on..slid in a ball of flame and came to rest just under us in the parking garage. Thankfully the driver walked away! Thanks, Bev!!!
I was first exposed to sports car racing at the first IMSA GP of SA in 1987, one of the last races won by the Al Holbert/Derek Bell #17 Lowenbrau Porsche 962 before Holbert's plane crash. There was going to be a resurrection of the race, this time routed around the Alamodome but local politicians were illegally lobbied to kill the deal by interest connected to other racing formats/venues. This I have direct information from within city hall.
Love this stuff!! Wish I could have witnessed some of these great turbo battles in person! Too bad US TV coverage was sketchy back then (and atrocious for F1).
I've been lucky to see '80s prototypes in person at recent historic races at Road Atlanta. They really are sleek and sexy like jet fighters! Today's prototype cars are quite ugly and restricted as well.
Yes, that's ol' Hobbsie, David Hobbs, current Speed F1 announcer calling the shots here. He still has the same speech mannerisms, as you'd expect. I didn't realize until last year that he had a very substantial racing career himself!
I was at all the Grand Prixs here in S.A. Is the one here that had the wreck slamming into the wall, bursting into flames and came to rest directly under the parking garage where we were. no one hurt. Wish we still had them!

Two questions.
1. Who won?
2. How can I get a copy of this and other IMSA or SCCA events?
