I've never actually rowed the 18'. My 16' footer manages myself and two guys perfectly. If I load a 4th guy I have to be mindful of gear and person weight. I overloaded my 1978 16' Lavro with myself (230lbs) and three other dudes on the Salmon R. by Challis, Idaho. It worked but it was slow to skirt and respond. I think the 18' with the floor width and lenght would be great and not cumbersome at all. Look at the Clackacraft 18' and compare. For big dudes and water; go for the 18'.
I run a 1978 16' Lavro. Excellent craft. This video is no exaggeration regarding their durability. I take the boat out year 'round for serious cast and blast adventures. I fish it on lakes and reservoirs with my young kids, hook steelhead in the fall. It lived a full life on the west side around Corvallis and is now plying the rivers of Idaho. I'd only sell it to buy Lavro's 18'er. My Lavro has truly been my most valuable fishing and recreation investment.
@ryanjmcgill I'm buying my first drift boat, and am impressed by the Lavro. Which model would you get for 2-3 guys fishing steelhead on Oregon coastal and Columbia tribs? You mention wanting to go from a 16' to an 18'. Does it become more unwieldy rowing it and controlling it in rough water?
