It should have been VERY apparent to the police that the man had issues, mentally or medically. Whoever gave the order to Taser the guy might not have been on the scene, be the ultimate responsibility lies in the cop who did the Taser shot. He should have KNOWN that the first thing the guy would do is fall to the GROUND! VERY VERY poor judgement. I don't think he has what it takes to be a cop. Cops routinely have to make split second life/death decisions, and this cop failed MISERABLEY!
A couple of months ago I saw a racist white cop trying to taser an innocent Black college guy, & the guy panicked & ran. & the cop tasered him & had him screaming. The Black guy did nothing. Cops can be bullies most times.

I got one better than this. The cops tazed a 13 year old boy up at PS 243 a few years back. They were called to settle a fight in the cafiteria. I noticed that never made the news :)

Alot of people say that New York has corrupt police walking the streets and beating and killing people at random but that just isn't true. Even a veteran of the police force cannot remain cool when they feel threatened its a split second choice of life or death and soometimes they make the wrong one. Put yourselves in their shoes. Lots of people are addicted to drugs and police are people too. They are not above temptations. They are not super human and above the law like you seem to believe.

I think a taser is a good tool, but it's just too easy to use, and makes the cop think less about other options. Its a quick fix to what otherwise would be a longer, more drawn out situation. The temptation to use it needs to be better regulated with more training.

Alot of people say that New York has corrupt police walking the streets and beating and killing people at random but that just isn't true. Even a veteran of the police force cannot remain cool when they feel threatened its a split second choice of life or death and soometimes they make the wrong one. Put yourselves in their shoes. Lots of people are addicted to drugs and police are people too. They are not above temptations. They are not super human and above the law like you seem to believe.

This man not be the best show, but hats off to them for exposing (no pun intended) this to the public. Tasers are NOT the solution. Here in Canada they are exchanging the tasers they have for newer more powerful ones. I did the job WITHOUT use of a taser. I'm only 5'5" and 180. Not what you would call a giant and there was NEVER a need for anything other than using your brain. Sidearm was a VERY last resort. I see some confrontations with police that are just a joke! Can't do the job, QUIT!

See if you feel the same when you or someone in your family has their first episode of a psychotic illness they didn't know they had. Your first can happen when you're as old as 70. Most people are lucky enough to be hospitilised, diagnosed and put on medication before they hurt themselves or others, and return to the person they were before the episode. This sort of illness is extremely common, and he was just one of the unlucky few injured at the hands of incompetent emergency service personel

In my opinion, tasers have helped saved lives thousands of times more than people have died from complications.
Many of the people who suddenly die from being tased were under the influence of a drug such as , cocaine, pcp, metn. Officers dont have time to ask their medical history or drug usage.

I think a taser is a good tool, but it's just too easy to use, and makes the cop think less about other options. Its a quick fix to what otherwise would be a longer, more drawn out situation. The temptation to use it needs to be better regulated with more training.

cops are just way way out of control lately. I'm all for law and order but even nonlethal stuff like tazer or pepperspray or beanbag guns are for people who are violent or pose a threat to an officer.
This guy was mental and needed medication and counseling. You don't just shoot him off the ledge because talking him down might take a few more minutes he's not a squirrel, I don't care what kind of "gun" or other force you are using. You get him off the ledge, and if falling you catch him.

It is a known fact that people die of heart attacks and so on from being tased. So if there is no danger to police and others, there is absolutly no reason to use them.
Many people over the past few years in Canada have went into cardiac arrest after being tased.
If there's 4 cops and one suspect "on the floor" resisting arrest, I don't see the need to tase. Yet cops tase "everytime" someone does not obey.
