  • Thank you! I hate twilight because o all these things and if some guy gave me a quote from Edward I'd either 1) laugh at them or 2) Give them a WTF look and turn around and walk away, far, far away.

  • I -still- come back to this now and then when I need to re-fuel my hope that there are still some sane people in this world. (Actually, whenever I see/hear someone fangasming over Twilight, but still.)

I realize the video is old, and I'm sure you could make a better one now, but either way the points are -still- just as valid.

Seriously makes me want to take some kind of literary analysis class with a big finalizing essay project just so I could argue the same thing (and finish some VLPA).

  • @CCGilthoniel You're right, I really could make a better one now. I've thought about it, but I'm not sure if I have the same passion against Twilight that I did back in the day. I'm just sick of it now, and I don't want to contribute to its fame and discussion.

  • @RobynasaursRex Thank you! I've thought about re-making this video because I think I could do it better now, and it's such a popular one, especially for how old it is.

  • I think if Stephanie Meyer would have actually researched things and thought out the books, Twilight could have been better. They seem too much like rough drafts of potentially better books.

Also: If they got rid of the pedophilia-ridden relationship (Bella & Edward; Jacob & Rennesme [spelling?])

  • REAL werewolves cant control when they transform. they only turn on a full moon. Vampires can turn into bats and perish the instant they are in light. also, they can fly. stop calling twilight a vampire/werewolf movie because they arent

  • @MrShredder67 First of all, there's no such thing as real vampires or real werewolves. So I think it's totally within SMeyer's right to call them vampires and werewolves-- it's her world. What I object to is how she heard the complaints of people like you, who pointed out that her werewolves don't match the conventional description of the fictional creature, and then CORRECTED herself in the last book, calling them "shape-shifters". She should have been consistent and supported her work.

  • Margaret, you rock, and i'm totally gonna make myself a 'I love JustMargaret' t-shirt.

  • an also: it's called infatuation

  • techically, unitl bella turned 18, edward was a pedo, so you win :)

and i now know why my interest in twilight waned after i read it: it's not a good series.

i do maintain this though: the first book was the best, and is actually okay to read. she should have stopped after that, because it bcomes like a fanfiction after that.

  • number 11 , VAMPIRES DON'T SPARKLE!!

  • as alex day says:

"Harry potter's about love.. an twilight.... is about lust."

  • I have never seen the books or watched the movies and I promised myself that I would never do either. Main reason is how SM portrays vampires Joss Whedon did a million times better with Buffy and Angel

  • @brentkillian Freaking YEAH! I mean, in my eyes Joss Whedon can do no wrong anyway, but seriously. SMeyer's vampires suck. It's so disheartening.

  • Well said! this vidoe made my day!! =) I'm going to pass it on to all my friends who have read twilight and agree it's total crap!

  • dear twilight fans: roasteddd

  • @jconradi2345 Hahaha, you're awesome.

  • baahaha. you're hilarious dude. and when you're a totally famous comedian.. i think i'll be proud to say that i've spent time in the very room all your best videos were recorded..LOL

  • This just made my day. I less than three you! =)

  • I like the video, but just saying, Edward's 117, not 107.

Good luck with your other videos...

    :)

  • i do like the twilight series but your video kinda opened my eyes and made me really think about everything you said and...... all of it is true. thanks for making the video!! :)

  • OH MY GOSH YOU HAVE A BO BURNHAM POSTER. I find this fact amazing. (And I agree with all this Twilight crap.)

  • thumbs up for hating with credibility!

  • Thank You.

  • Great video!

You are right about the bad writing, the creepy guys and their unnatural love, but that doesnt make the books less awesome. Just look at how many copies of the books that have been sold, or new moons (film) incredible popularity. The numbers speak for themselves

Then i would like to comment on a common misunderstanding: Pedophilia is when an adult is sexually attracted to a child. Bella is not a child and edward is physically the same age as bella (edwards actual age doesnt matter)

  • @soyfungus The numbers, in my opinion, speak more about young girls and how they think than it does to the books themselves. I think one of the reasons the books are so tragically popular is that Bella has no personality, so girls are able to insert themselves into her character and read the book that way. Whether SM did that on purpose, or because she just can't write a decent character is another issue.

And it's not about physical! He is MENTALLY 100 years older than her. That. Is. Gross.

  • @JustMargaret

You are right about the numbers, but considering that the books target audience is young girls, the books are quite awesome ;)

I would not know about inserting myself into Bella (lol), since I'm a guy, but her personality is sufficiently defined for the story.

Edward is frozen at 17 and will not change (physically or mentally) in any way (with one exception..). Therefore it is only natural that Edward is attracted to another 17 year old.

Pedophilia actually only about physical age.

  • @soyfungus she's not 18 yet though

  • Margaret,

First off I found you through BF and when Stephan brought but Internet fame and you said the Vlogbrothers I came here right away to subscribe.

You were so good on the show and I love this video too. I like all the point you made, especially about the Natives. It never occured to me about their culture being exploited.

DFTBA and I hope to hear you on BF more.

    :)

  • @natalieXeilatan AWW. This comment made me really, really happy. I haven't the courage to listen to my episode of BF, but I was weird and awkward and uninteresting during the whole recording, so I don't see how the final product could be much different. But thank you for saying that. :)

  • Wow you made so may good points. Seriously I liked the books but not the movies before I watched this but... I think you changed my mind. You are absolutely right about everything you said.

  • Handy argument. I'ma toss this at my sister.

  • Haha! :)

  • (...can't...resist)

Dumbledore would be a better example than Snape. Almost everyone still adores Dumbledore (myself included), despite how he almost got Harry killed by not telling him about the prophecy. And how his love for Grindelvald more or less got his sister killed. But, like you said, the readers of Twilight are basically required to fall in love with Edward, which isn't the case in HP.

So...moot point. Sorry. I can't just not talk about Harry Potter. I'll stop now. Swear to God haha.

  • Hahaha! You're funny. Even if you did make me question my very being. :)

  • ...yeah. Or something. And you were expecting hater comments as in, "SHUT YO MOUF! ED N BELLZ 4EVAA!" haha. I'm not like legitimately angry or anything, just trying to express a POV. That opinions are always subjective and never facts. And making fun of something even if you have proof of its suckiness is not...cool. Anyway. 5 Stars!

  • Wow. Thank you. I think you made a lot of valid points.

First of all, I hate Snape (six years of being a jerk doesn't go away because he had a crush on Harry's mom), but I see your point.

And the thing about Umbridge is, she is clearly the villain (or A villain). We're not SUPPOSED to like her. We're supposed to like Edward. He's supposed to be the good guy. The fact that the character that we're supposed to root for is abusive (and that we are, therefore, rooting for abuse) is what irks me.

  • You're right, though, I didn't think about the fact that Edward too tries to kill himself. That's just as stupid as Bella being unable to live without Edward, but I think it's less relevant because the books are told from Bella's perspective. Also, let's face it, the vast majority of people who read Twilight are girls and therefore relate more to Bella than Edward. Also, girls feeling dependent on guys is more prevalent IRL. (Not that there aren't needy, dependent guys [like Edward]! There are!)

  • (It's just less of an issue.) And, yes, lots of IRL couples would feel similarly. But they probably love each other, and I hold firm in the belief that whatever Edward and Bella have, it's not love. (Because if that's what love is, then I don't want to fall in love. Yuck.)

And I know that I'm not the first person, and, trust me, it pisses me off too when people change their minds just because the general opinion of something changes. But I can tell you right now that I really, REALLY hate it.

  • I've changed a lot since reading Twilight. I know how that sounds, but I don't know how else to say it. Seriously, in the two years since I've read the books, I've probably changed more than I have in my whole life. That just sounds like an excuse, I know. It's not, though. It's true. I'm sort of an entirely different person now. And it's not just Twilight- my opinions on lots of other things have changed since then. Trust me, this isn't just me trying to cover up some dirty secret of my past.

  • I truly, genuinely hate what those books are doing to our generation and I wanted to voice some reasons.

Thanks for being the most eloquent almost-hater-but-not-really comment that I think I've ever had. :) My commenters are the best.

  • "Wow" right back at ya. Thanks so much for responding point by point. Honestly, everything you said clarified everything I brought up. Particularly that you're super passionate about the negative effect the books have on the young audience; that makes more sense than if you'd just said, "Twilight is dumb," to piss people off. And thanks for explaining that you've changed a lot and you didn't just start hating to appease the haters.

    ...Intellectual Discourse FTW! Seriously. Thanks.

  • particularly well written, but I don't understand the need to explain to people why they should feel bad about themselves for enjoying a book, just 'cause it's easy to make fun of.

You're also not the first person to have read all four books and then, post-Twilight-pop-culture-explosion, try to justify it and say that you were dumb for liking it. I think it's silly to change your opinion of something just because a lot of seemingly not very intellectual young women like it un-ironically.

  • (con't. stupid character limit.) ...when he thought Bella was dead. So it goes both ways; it's not just that the girl couldn't live without her dude. And because of the vapidness of Bella, it's easy to just think of her as retarded, but there are IRL people who would feel that way if their significant other left them.

I'm a giant HP fan. I read the four Twilight books in 2008 and dug 'em. Not enough to ever re-read or anything, but they were fun. I completely agree that they're silly and not...

  • Re: Jacob and Edward being abusive - Snape very likely killed people (before he overheard the prophecy). I, of course, still think of him as one of the greatest characters in the history of literature, I'm just saying pointing out that a flawed character did stupid shit isn't the same as criticizing a book. (Nobody says that Harry Potter sucked because Umbridge was a bitch.) And Re: the whole Bella can't live without Edward thing - I agree that it's fucked up, but he tried to kill himself...

  • i MAJORLY disagree with ToxicPopsicle. coming from an ex-twilight fangirl who grew up and finally read something worth while (thank god!), i agree with all of your's and ann's points. so kudoes to you! watching that was an amazing use of 8 minutes! DFTBA!

  • Hi! I'm a new subscriber.

    -sharon

  • :D Thank you!

  • How dare you insult such a wonderful piece of literature!?

    Just joking, don't hurt me.

    I appreciate this.

  • I clicked on the Video because she looked like Kate Winslet.

  • I was hoping for something worth watching, but I guess I jut lost 8 minutes of my life... and also the 30 seconds it took to write this.

  • I'm sorry. You DID get a sticker out of it, so it wasn't a COMPLETE loss, right? :)

  • Hilarious video! Yet, it was ALL true.

  • I just received word that Bella plays with her hair 21 times in the new movie. Just throwing that out there.

  • I watched the movie Thursday (for the soul purpose of looking at the guy who plays Jacob I do admit...) and if I remember correctly at one part Edward said something about being 107 (or however old he is) and at the instant I screamed, "PEDOPHILE!!!!" and told my cousin to hid her children XD A lot of people glared at me and I was yelled at by my family xD

  • YOU ARE SO COOL. :D

  • Why thank you XD And so are you :O

  • i absolutely love this video!

  • (choir of singing angles) finally someone understands the horrible creepiness of twilight.

ps: I haven't read the books but I have wasted plenty of my life already watching the expressionless movies. Yay for bad acting!!

  • Ugh, don't even get me STARTED on the acting.

It was lovely to see you, Nigel! Guess what! I'm coming back in, like, TWO WEEKS. Yay!

  • Woohoo! :D

  • you go girl!!!!!

  • I haven't seen New Moon yet, and everybody's been on and on about it!

On the topic of Twilight... I think though on the whole I don't like Twilight, there are some things I enjoyed in it (like and enjoy beng used here as seperate words), and I disagree with several of the points you made. I guess I just have a different view of love and relationships. I would go into it in this comment... but maybe I'll just make a video response because there's not much room in here! Very interesting!

  • Please make a video response! I want to know what you think. :)

  • Margaret, you're amazing. And I am prepared to do battle against Twi-tards in your comments.

    XD

  • *applause*

I've heard the majority of the arguments before in one fashion or another... and plenty of others... THANK YOU for being intelligent on this subject and putting it forth for what it is. I was looking forward to the Harry Potter VS Twilight, but this one is easily better, -because- it's so serious.

    Way to go, Margaret! ^_^

  • :D Glad you enjoyed it! I might still make a Harry Potter v. Twilight video, but I feel like there's sort of no point now. I mean, how could anyone argue that Twilight is better than anything after this? Haha.

  • haha YES! This totally made my day :D You are going places, my dear. This video was awesome.

p.s. I'll try not to mess up your comments this time xD

  • I helped..........YAY!!!! I feel as if I have graduated from stalker to contributer! I personally feel that the sticker at the end was directed at me for this grand achivement! But, I guess I can share. :)

    P.S. I completly agree!

  • GAAAH FUCK U LKJWFEI111! (<-- grammar, rite?)

LOL WHERE CAN I BUY THAT SHIRT?

I think immediate obsession is defined by Tina Fey (at least in my case).

Can't wait to read these to my preteen daughters.

  • LOL. People thumbed down this comment.

  • YAY GINGERBREAD MAN!

  • Well said!
