thats amazing, most people that dont play brass have no idea that you have to change the way ur lips fit in the moutpiece, i have no clue on how they compensated for that, but it still could never match a humans playing... not matter how cool this robot is hahaha
@NorthPortStrad Think again. All you need is a program written based on the fundamentals of playing musically with expression and upload that into one of the computer chips inside the robot. As time goes by that can get better and better at a rate humans will be unable to match. Combined with better tone and intonation which will be easily done and robots will be the best musicians.
Won't be soon but we may see it in our lifetimes. Not a very promising thought for violists like myself.
@NorthPortStrad But it can easily be used to play back the recorded expression of human artists. If a real musician simply played an trumpet that recorded the input of the finger presses as well as data like air flow, they could use that data and have the robot replay that perfectly. It's not true expression, but it sounds nice.
i find this to be kind of cool, yet at the same time it pissed me off. it's awesome how the human being is capable of engineering something like that. but it pisses me off that it's not human, seriously Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong is probably twitching in his grave. it's awesome we can do this but i'd rather have a human being that puts the effort into training and playing for years do this, not some robot that they can manipulate the embouchure for using lip like substances.
all it takes is one sell out trumpet player to play for the japs so they can analyze him and replicate his embouchure movements. Ill post the link to the cut away later. Its real folks.
Anyone who thinks this is realy a robot playing the trumpet is gullible and/or without knowledge of what it takes to produce the sound on a brass instrument. It is obviously a recording. No machine could coordinate the lip buzzing and fingering to go with it. A machine could blow air through a horn and maybe even do the fingering mathematically, but to produce that tone? No way. A human takes years to develope that ability and the tissue of the tongue and lips would have to be human to do so
It could be done with compressed air of differing pressures and resonances. The concept isnt outside of current technological capability. And i played trumpet for years so i know where your comming from.
Let me know when they make a robot play all of the major music styles with feeling and a better tone. Also, have it mimic the tones of the great trumpet players like Phil Smith and Chris Martin on the symphonic style, then Wynton Marsalis, Cootie Williams, Clark Terry, and Miles Davis of the Jazz style. After that, have the robot play on all of the different types of trumpets such as a pic., C, Eb, and Bb models.
That's what most people think when they see Humanoid robots. It is a machine actually playing a musical instrument, via programmed subroutines. Read about advancements in androids in Japan and the USA in century-21.
My trumpet prof told me about this... it's gunna put me out of a job. He also said (as vice president of ITG) that they are trying to get Toyota to do a competition between the robot and Wayne Bergeron. This I will have to see.
Some people are so ignorant, yes the robot has a form of soft lips.Look it up. It's like when you put grass between your thumbs and make it vibrate, except this is more complex than that. Research people, your on the net damn it. Do you really think Toyota wold spend this amount of money just to fake this feat.
There's no way this thing is real. Trumpet requires a tight embouchure, which includes the lips and muscles surrounding them. There's no way you could possibly replicate that. 'A certain pressure of air' does not create sound on trumpet. That's just plain bs. Way to go, ashaiba91.
This is actually real. Toyota, Japan actually built a robot that can play trumpet. They replicated the human face underneath that robot shell and manufactured a material that is nearly identical in texture to human lips. Do some research: it's real. Sad, but true.
It sounds repeatedly like it is taking breaths... it shouldn't be stopping for breaths seeing as its a robot and can have an intake of air and an outtake of air at the same time. Seems suspicious to me...
I was just notcing that on another thread (/watch?v=T1etIeZFm14). There are other human-like imperfections--e.g. the rhythm is inconsistent and rushed sometimes, it sounds like there's a "tonguing" error at 1:26, etc.
you know what that is not easy i play trumpet and that robot is better than me and trust me i have been playing trumpet for a lonnng time so dont be sayin that is is easy you try it it hurts your lips like heck!!!!
lol guys if you cant figure this out....the robot is using speakers to play that music, watch its fingers, they only coincide with the music about 80% of the time...it is just more like a mechanoid version of an ipod
This is lame because it is fake. I'm a trumpet player. That is a real person, or recording of a real person . . . don't be fooled into thinking the robod is actually playing it. Appropriately, the last tune is "Mickey Mouse."
this is the lamest video on you tube. how could u post that along side such classics as that Japanese Battle. haha. that's pretty cool man. where was it?
I want it.

hmm...too bad its sound is horribly monotone and lacking in any expression or emotion...
no machine will ever be capable of replicating the expression a human being can put into music....
just like a human being will never be able to replicate the mystery behind a wolfs howl...
