Hey kaki I am a fellow musician and one thing i've discovered is that if you just make something thats popular and that will sell you will just make urself miserable. Play what you are wanting to play and as long as it sounds beautiful and perfect to you thats all that matters and the rest will follow.
"People don't make music like this nowadays, people do not make nerd music. People make music for cool people that have punchy choruses and catchy things they can sing along with in minor keys so they can feel appropriately melancholy and dark and epic and weird and cynical but at the same time good about everything because the song works and there's a chorus a verse and a bridge."
If anyone's played Mirrors edge, there's a piece of music on one of the final levels, I think It's called The Shard (Ambient) or something, and it reminds me of this. :)
wow i think i just realized why i liike Kaki King now. Her style falls under the other indie bands like God Speed you Black Emperor and Explosions in the Sky and The Fucking Champs(at least with the experimentation) and Blond Redhead and Enon and the Dresden Dolls....nerd music^^
I really like Kaki. And I really like that song. But I think she couldn't be further from the truth when she said that other musicians weren't experimenting with that type of style.
It's not uncommon that a popular musican calls themselves a pioneer of sorts. Kaki King didn't introduce this type of music to the world. But she did take it one step further. Eventually someone else will come along and do something even better.
and kaki, i saw you a couple weeks ago and can i just say that you are even more incredible live! sara quin was right when she said that its fun to watch you blow the audience's minds! i dragged my friend along and it was the first time she had ever heard you and she was absolutely amazed. so, i guess just thank you!
saw you at the paradise just last week and you were GREAT! looking forward to seeing you again, this album is absolutely fantastic and i can only imagine how much work you put into it. this video gives us an idea, but we still can't see just how much effort you poured into it. bravo!
Fab video, so great! So glad you played on Tegan and Sara's Album, so I could find out about your music! Awesome! Oh, and for playing with them in Sydney last year, that was great!
Nice, nice, very nice. Love your music. I'm still perturbed I didn't get to see you when you played Morgantown, WVa a few years back. Come to Berkeley.
lovely studio

Nerds rule the world. I love polyrhythms and all that odd time sigs. The more of that stuff, the better.
