  • There's nothing wrong with eating what you want. You need to exercise properly. Parents aren't letting their kids out of the house as much as they used to. That's probably the real reason why kids are getting so fat. But it's not as big of a problem as people think.

  • My kids attend the school where this was filmed. My family does eat healthy on a daily basis, however my kids don't know the names to EVERY vegetable out there. I am glad that Jamie is doing this, because of the staggering cases of obesity and diabetes in our children, only we as parents can change this.

  • My kids go to the school where this was filmed......We do eat healthy, however my kids don't know the name of EVERY vegetable out there. My grandmother has a garden and we have helped her with it. I am Glad Jamie is doing this because obesity in children is staggering. All of my girls are very thin, but this is not the case in most of out kids.

  • These children are six years old, and in a room with a lot of cameras and an intimidating foreign man who is asking a miriad of questions. I live in WV, teach in WV, and raise my own children in WV and I have to say that being in a rural area we are probably more familiar with organic domestic vegetables than most since we tend our own gardens during the summer months. The Federal Hot lunch Program is a disgrace and I am pretty sure this is a fairly wide spread problem.

  • omg. he's the foreigner!

the only 'vegetable' america is aware of is "nacho chese"

  • wow, thanks for generalizing.

  • Wow this is crazy!! America is crazy. We need to teach little kids real food!

  • Autism parents like myself are intensely interested in nutrition, but people lucky enough to have "normal" children don't seem to get how important it is. I just found out about this Jamie dude, but I'm LOVING him! Go Jamie. Get people's attention!

  • Tresjlie is right how about that editing, wonder if Jamie Oiver trying to make children feel degraded on national tv will affect their lives, way to go Jamie. They probably can't understand him for the lisp and the accent!!

  • very cute kids. "tomato ketchup? I know that one." cute little accent, but sad these kids don't know what fresh veggies look like. o.0

  • It's kind of telling that when he unveiled the table full of vegetables, the whole class gasped in (seeming) disgust.

  • I just start a volunteer job about a month ago at an elementary school. I only work there one hour each time. I saw those kids eating snacks prepared by school. Brownies, muffins and cheese sticks are what provided to kids. Those stuff are so unhealthy, and I hope those parents know what schools are feeding their children

  • He did the same thing in his kids school district in Britain a few years back, not singling out America.....the problem is EVERYWHERE. I grow vegetables for a living and when kids (city and country) visit my farm, it is shocking how little they know about where their food comes from, and what it looks like in it's natural form.

  • First off, Jamie Oliver is Anti-American, and out to show off how "stupid" Americans are.

First off, watch how this is edited, aside from the one boy who mistook a potato, for a tomato, there were three other eager kids with their hands up.

Six year olds may not recognize turnips, beets, and eggplant, because they may not have seen it prepared in their homes, not because they are dumb, because they are six.

The scenes with the cauliflower, if he had cut it up, would they recognize it?

  • This isn't about stupid versus smart. This is about exposure to fersh food versus processed food. The point is that these foods *aren't* in their homes, therefore they don't recognize them.

  • @icu2kenna you are right.. i grew up going with my grandmother to buy vegetables everyday for lunch. at that age i could tell what everything was but it's not about being smart but being exposed.

  • @Tresjolie9: its not about the kids who have thier hands up and know what it is. its about all the kids who dont know what it is

and he is not anti-america and is not trying to show off how stupid us americans are.

  • @Tresjolie9

Aww grow up. Fast food is global.

  • calm down bro

  • It doesn't matter if he is anti-american AMERICA is in a health crisis with childhood obesity and the rate of the three leading cause of death rocketing...AND of course if a parent doesn't let thier kids eat a VARIETY of foods including BEETS, TURNIPS, and EGGPLANT how would the child ever know what they were? My little brother is 5 and i can BET u a billion dollars he can name his veggies because we eat healthy!

  • sick of these nanny-state communists...leave the food alone.....what happened to freedom of choice? Pretty soon were gonna be forced to eat lettuce without no choice if we let these progressives have their way.....worry about your own selves

  • Your comment epitomizes what's wrong with the USA. Thank you for sharing your ignorance today.

  • Wow.... that must be a pretty terrible school. Kids here learn their veggies in preschool, and it's been that way (at least) ever since the "food pyramid" came into existence. I'm seriously doubting that these kids(or their parents) weren't paid to act dumb....

  • BRILLIANT!!! This is extremely exciting! After I saw Jamie's TED presentation I cannot wait for people to get motivated about this stuff. I'm tired of corporations LOADING our foods with Corn Syrup and utter JUNK. Let's take back our bodies and get healthy again!

  • @turbo2oh, you're assuming that everyone eats processed veggies (pickled beets, for instance). My 4 year old was able to ID everything but the eggplant (which I don't like so I don't cook it). Most of the veg that comes into our house comes in whole, as it should.

@mocrg, I have three kids who love broccoli. If you don't offer it to them, of course they "don't like it." I'm excited to see this, but I doubt it changes much, unfortunately.

  • It starts with the parents and here is your result.

It's obvious that many people don't slow down long enough to experience where their food comes from or what it actually is, or much less, try and grow it . Proud to say that our daughter can ID and eats all these veggies as well as helps grow them.

  • If you feel inspired by Jamie's campaign, he has created an online petition, promoting healthy food for children, that he will present to the White House. You can find the petition at his website, under "Campaigns"

  • advanced for a six year old?? my two year old knows all of these foods. we belong to a csa and each week in the summer we go to the farm and he helps weigh and pick the food, and helps prepare it at home. And he loves veggies. It's actually a bit of a stretch on our budget, but we decided that it was worth it for him to know where food comes from and to be involved in it He loves it!. I WISH I WISH I WISH that all kids had this opportunity!

  • I must say your child is an exception. Most children believe a proper vegetable at dinner is french fries. Good for you. I'm doing an organic garden this year rather than spending the money on a CSA.

  • I do think eggplant and cauliflower are a bit advanced for 6 yr-olds, although Oliver's point is still very well taken.

  • @sopranosd Most kids don't like cauliflower or broccoli but at least you would think they would know what they look like in order to hate them.

I look forward to this show and hope it changes school meals around the country.

  • why would a 6 year old be exposed to a raw beet? some of these foods often look nothing like their orignal form when prepared. i think it tries to draw a broad conclusion from a loose premise.

  • Maybe, but a tomato? I think this *is* telling of the state of affairs in America, especially if you look at the obesity rates among children.

  • Not every 6 year old but yes there would be six year olds who have been exposed to raw beets. They also did not recognize tomatoes or potatoes which are fairly common vegtables ~ at least I think they are common vegtables. I would not say that all children could not recognize whole vegtables but it is disturbing that so many could not identify vegtables. At least they are young and things can change.

  • Makes it pretty obvious what the parents of these kids feed to them and what they , um, "cook" at home. I was lucky to be raised by a woman who kept a garden. My favorite foods to this day are the kinds you pick off trees and bushes. (mmmm raspberries)

  • Sad Just Sad .

  • Geesh. Could it be any more obvious that our nation's food system needs a total overhaul??

  • Wow!!!! This is sooooo important!!

I just showed this to my 5yo and 3 yo. My 5 yo knew the tomato and potato but not the eggplant, cauliflower, and beet. I'll add those to the grocery list.

  • Oh wow.

  • oh man....USA! USA!

we're dead last on the veggie front...

  • yea you are

  • Absolutely ridiculous and inconceivable. What is going on in this country?

  • This is a fantastic idea for a show especially since most kids watch way too much TV. Now they can learn about where 'real' food comes from rather than vegetating in front of the tube. This is sending a great message to our youth and hopefully will steer them away from eating a majority of processed foods. Kudos to you Jamie Oliver!

  • second? really?

  • He should try this out on seven- or eight-year-olds. If THEY don't know these vegetables, then maybe we should worry.

  • My goodness there are some dumb kids out there!

  • thats disgusting, wtf do those kids eat and there parents really need to look at they are teaching their kids

  • Interesting.

  • This is just pathetic .

  • OMG, this is what the fats food industry (no I didn't misspell that) this is what the beef industry is doing, this is what the school system is doing to your children, WE MUST TAKE OUR PLATES BACK!!!!

  • "Welcome, welcome" so insincere, I hated my corny fake elementary school teachers. also, why do kids always feel it necessary to shout their age, SIXXXX!!!!!!!

    get off the Ritalin kids

  • Sad and tragic. If the food companies can feed us sh*t, we become unhealthy and then the healthcare companies can feed us more sh*t.

    It's win win. For them.

  • A bit sad...kids don't know what potatoes and tomatoes are....

  • USA! USA! (sarcasm)

  • very, very sad. I bet every one of those kids could name Ronald McDonald, though. :(

  • NO one is that stupid.

    NO

    ONE.

Jamie is just a snob out to make Americans looks bad. Seems to be a real fetish for hasbeen Brits to head to the States looking for the most inbred Jeds they can find and portray them as the typical Yank.

  • Well, that's the South for you - a people that are in love with their own ignorance.

  • Parents stop feeding your kids McDonalds and get them some healthy food!

  • Go West Virginia

  • "Brawndo: It's What Plants Crave!"

  • No doubt these ignorant kids ignorant parents voted for that idiot ignoramus Palin.

Proof that the US education system is broken.

  • aww that's plain sad.

  • That kid seemed so sure it was egg salad.

  • Weird. I liked the kid who yelled "Egg Salad!". I take it that was in the UK and not the States. Most kids here would know a tomato from a potato, I mean come on, how could you not know? It's no wonder Europeans always look so unhealthy and their teeth are rotten; they don't eat any fresh food.

  • stupid kids can't recognize a ketchup plant when they see it

  • I know Jamie's heart is in the right place, but I would not expect 6-year olds to identify beets, cauliflower, eggplant or mushroom.

But not recognizing tomatoes or potatoes? That was sad.

  • Thank you Jaimie!
