Playing an arpeggio to show off ocillation cut-off is OK...couldn't you play something melodic to demo it, tho? That 5 note random pattern was rather jarring. Other than that, drop the word "frickin'" and you got an awesome video :) (5 stars anyway)
I want a synth unit that is like about 10 foot tall & about 16 feet wide! You know, some big monster of a machine! I play an ARP simulation that I customized on my computer, but it's just not the same as the real deal! I am trying to figure out how to build my own synth so if any one knows any ways to go about that ,that would be nice!
@AutomaticGainsay: The original ARP 2600 manual is awesome for learning everything you need to know about analog synths. Even if you buy the Minimoog you have to download the ARP 2600 manual. :D
In simple terms there is a resonant peak which is the result of sending some of the signal from the output of the filter (at a specific pitch) back into the input of the filter internally. If you push the resonance up too high then a filter can self-oscillate' because the amount fed back into it is just more than what is coming out.
If we're talking about Paninaro by Pet Shop Boys, I would guess the sound comes from a Roland JX8P or something in that family. It sounds more like synced oscillators. Remember that this is in the middle of the 80s, a real low point for brands like moog and ARP.
Thanks, you are almost certainly more knowledgeable about it than I am. However, using a borrowed JV-1080, I was once able to get a similar sound using a narrow, midpass resonant filter on a grungy sawtooth sample.
I think the volume drops with the increase in resonance because the sound is still very piercing in self-oscillator, and the volume drop keeps it from destroying your ears... possibly.
Ah, great as usual. I like that you've finally glued your cuts together with fades. That looks a lot better. And I think this video uses the least amount of patch cords out of all the ARP demos yet: 1.
This is a great series. I've been waiting with bated breath for the filter installments. You should make a video showing off your Dotcom modular. Keep making great videos.
Ou that is nice!!!

Very nice synth, very nice filter, but to me still sounds ARP than moog.

Tony Banks played the Arp Quadra in the 70's, always thought he had the richest sounding synths, (T.B. was underated)

i agree

My JX-8P also reduces the output as I turn up the resonance.

can you play in my band?

Do you like your minimoog or the arp better? I have a mini D, but I want a 2600 with the arp sequencer so bad after playing with the arturia demo

You're not supposed to ask me that question! ; )

What no patch cords?
ARP 2600 is unique among mass produced analogs. But comparing Moog mini to Arp 2600 is like wheat bread and french bread , both are food.
Filters are what makes 'em classic. I would suggest running a mini thru a 2600 for real thrills! ; ) Great demo.

Hi, I'm trying to understand what "self oscillating" means and sounds like. Is it when it sounds high pitched at approx. 3:50? thanks!

Where did you get an ARP 2600 ??

I envy your 3620! It's on the only thing I wish mine had.

Can you put a 4072 filter module in it?
otherwise, it sounds great.

You would want to?

Looks like something old school electronica bands like Kraftwerk used.

Interesting demonstration. I think I read somewhere that the filter sweeps in "Paninaro" were done on the ARP 2600.

I am listening to the video using some cheap Altec Lansing speakers and my entire studio shakes! not even my Rolan JD 800 :s

Doesn't the ARP 2600 have an inverse filter option?
TheOriginalSpaceman 3 years ago
You can patch oscilator 2 through the voltage controller and that way invert it.

I know this is unrelated, but will the Preamplifier section be discussed in later videos?

It's not that exciting, it is just a means to bring a sound source up to a workable level... but yes!
