Problem is, it took several hundred years for metalworking to advance to the point where they could actually be made in feudal japan. They still existed, they just had more in common with the machete of sabre back then. Tony Jaa is using a very early and primitive version of what will eventually evolve into the katana.

I love the multitude of weapons throughout this. I see Katanas, Kama, Thai Dha's, A 3 section staff, A ninjato here and there, spears of various kinds. From China I see the Dao, Jian, Niuweidao, Guandao, and others. I even see a pair of claws and katars. A kunai and rope, several scimitars, and I even saw a naginata I think. I love the extensive of use of so many things in this.
