  • I don't understand why she says these countries have not improved all these years. According to UN data, most of African countries have improved income and life expectancy in a significant way, if it wasn't for civil wars and AIDS, they'd be a lot better.

But I agree with her criticism of Bono-like foreign aid. Why haven't I ever heard Bono saying words like "microfinance" or "venture capital"?

  • Botswana and Namibia are powerful countries. Look at our progress without that nonce's corruption from landlocked countries like Malawi and Zambia. Corruption is everywhere in the world, besides Lusaka`s economy is doing great with no Aid assistants involve while Mandona sent tourist to visit Blantyre.

  • She's right.

  • Everyone knows (or at least should know) that Africa was never really meant to be truly free & independent by her former colonial masters regardless of all their big talk about helping them catch up to the rest of the world. I put it to you: Since when has any Master ever been sincerely delighted over the prospect of manumission? Even Pharaoh ultimately decided to go back and reacquire his former Hebrew slaves. Indeed, Aid to Africa is nothing more than a clever delusion by the West.

  • the white guy is such a dick... the smirks are annoying. go her for being strong.

  • The world stole Africa the whole history and now we make excuses ("Africa like Norway!") A good help would be shut up the Pope about condoms.

  • She is right.

What is ironic is that she talks about microfinance and yet argues with Jacqueline Novogratz (founder of Duterimbere and the Acumen fund - both microfinance institutions) so vehemently on CNN.

    She has an ego.

I also suspect she has a strong bias for free trade. Trade liberalisation was a factor in the impoverishment of Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire after the global cocao price plummeted.

And corporations are not altruistic. E.g., Shell steals Nigerian oil and corrupts the government

  • omd i been looking for some1 who agress with me on this, i really love your video keep educating

  • You got my vote Dambisa Moyo as a simple economist you have a very point which Politicians will never understand you.

  • Much as I may Agree with some of your points ...You Should Stop Comparing Africa to Norway...Your statement "Africa should be like Norway" is rather be-littling Africa.

Africa is a proud Continent and we need to beleive in ourselves that we can make it regardless of any odds.

The wealth of Africa should not just be compared to a country like Norway..Style up in your activism

    SMB

  • i need dambisa to smother my face with her huge muscular black ass.

  • What an intelligent African woman. She carries herself a lot like Michelle Obama. Please continue this noble work. Africa needs you.

  • Very brave and educated young woman addressing the issue of aid to African governments. Very interesting discussion.

  • Can US hold their governments accountable for what just happened here, spending billions of dollars to bail out investment banks?

  • I think she's right, hats off the norwegians for their generosity tough.

  • Ms. Moyo is correct a problem is there are white entertainers and celebrities are a hinderance. The African governments should be doing more to help African people. I agree with Ms. Moyo is the Hollywood celebrities are negative and racist.

  • I wish editors and presentators would take time to make clear introductions so we are able to pronounce names correctly.

How well she speaks! I would suggest that people of all colors take care to speak the current correct words of English to put themselves in a better position as to employment and assimilation.

  • she is realy realy nice, intellegent, real confident, african hero,i wish her success, when i see some one like her i proud to be african

  • I can feel the heat in the MP's body. He is part of the culture that support the corrupt regimes in Africa. Cut of the aid pipeline and let Africans devise their own plan to solve their problems.

I am an African and I don't see how aid has helped me or my country. Can the MP explain why aid continues to flow to Africa and yet poverty is getting worse. Aid is part of the problem not solution. Like she said aid makes African leaders to take the back seat not making any effort on their own.

  • Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. - Lao Tzu.

Investment should be from the bottom up, stimulating individuals to start their own business and (as a starter) establish rural communities that are self dependent. Then trade can begin and with education, the progress will be immense.

If I ever become a rich capitalist, then I will try to set up my own network of bottom up investment.

It's good to see that we agree.

  • your 21 and from cananda. listen up youngin. your just too stupid to realize that you never listen to anyone who worked for WORLD BANK about aid. idiot. these elites love her because she pushes their ideas. numnuts.

  • How does his age and nationality influence his opinion? At least he/she can spell. And exactly what idea from the world bank is she pushing?

Reading your comment below I am quite sure that you're a troll. Fail troll is fail.

  • I would just like to make one correct, in Malawi, it is Bakili Muluzi, the former president that is being prosecuted for the 12million dollars, not the incumbent Bingu Wa Mutharika. Other than that, I think I'm truly starting to come around to her argument. Keep up the good work.

  • Her argument couldn't be more logical. If you want Africa to be stronger then you should support Africa in becoming independent and self reliant. That doesn't mean all the other nations of the world should close their doors to Africa, but they should try to close the door to the aid that makes Africa TOTALLY dependent of the rest of the world. I support the effort of Dambisa Moyo in trying to educate the world in the kinds of aid that hurts Africa.

  • @canadian97 SPOT on comment. Out of no related interest, what did/would you study at university/college? thanks!

  • She's 100% right and history supports her argument...since billion has be poured into the africa we should have seen a clear decrease in poverty and corruption and mortality ratio...too much money is a negative incentive.

  • Let me ask you all this. Would you trust someone that once gave an interview while eating octopus. Yes, octopus. Have a good day all.

  • One last thing, because i am going to erase your name from my memory completely. Hating celebrities like Bono's efforts to help Africa, just goes to show that you hate all types of aid...especially charity aid. Chow.

  • You should watch "We are the World Again" even though they misquoted the bible. They raised 60 million. And yes we do want a message of death, diseases etc. WE WANT THE TRUTH. We want the message to come from them - the celebrities - because people try and imitate celebrities. We want people around the world to wakup. That was a pathetic assessment of Bono. LOL. Let me ask you this. Do you give money to homeless people. You should try it sometime. You would probably feel better.

  • i mean logical (sp).

I cant watch this bs anymore. Why we should never listen to elites. Exhibit A....(this video)

  • She does not strike me as someone that has strong logically skills. Seems kind of like a hypocrite too. I haven't listen to much of what she has had to say, but her ideas are very conflicting. I don't think we should give aid. Ok, next please.lol.

  • stupid old dog, leave the people with brains alone and play your video games at the age of 40! silly humanbeing, i wish you could have a millionth of Dambisa's ideas in your rotten head!

  • The best thing the world can do for Africa is to build schools everywhere.

The better educated their citizens will become, the better & faster they will progress and generate, teachers, engineers, scientists, doctors etc.

And a better quality & selection of candidates will emerge to govern.

  • Yes but education alone will not solve the problem, infact it may worsen it. Case in point, Zimbabwe had until recently the highest lirearcy rate in Africa, over 92%. Sadly due to a complex set of unfortunate circumstances, inluding bad governance, the land issue, sanctions etc, the country's economy has since 2000 deteriorated to the point that it has lost much of its educated populace to the more developed nations, so its been in some ways a complete waste of its investment in education.

  • She's got my vote!

  • An instant favorite. Finally someone agrees with me. Tks steve0281 for sharing

  • I do agree that Bob Geldof is a cu*nt.

  • This will not happen because of the neo liberal policies adopted by the WTO; fervently supported by the U.S and U.K governements. These issues tackled otherwise what Moyo states about aid is irrelevant. Moreover, the amount of interest accrued on the loans to some African nations from the world bank, in many instances greatly outweigh the money given in aid. It's completley right to say that aid can't fix this problem, but aid cannot be offered as a cause of these issues.

  • Moyo is deluded when she says Africa shouldn't be a junior partner, African countires will only become self sustaining when they can protect and subsidise their own markets and are able to limit the amount of foreign imports.

  • She neglects to talk about the the issue cancelling of third world debt; which would greatly alleviate the financial pressure on African countries. African citizens need to be able to control their own resources and infrastructure, and this is something that will never happen given the rampant 'investment' by foreign companies who transfers profits away from the communties where which they have been earned.

  • Foreign aid is simply a transference of money from poor people in rich countries to rich people in poor countries.

  • That is great, tell those Norwegian socialists the truth.

  • Sorry your imput about Norway being socialist is totally wrong. They have a SOCIALIZED system, a more egalitarian society and it does not even ressemble socialism.Another fact hey rate number 1 worldwide as living standards - it's a magnificent country not to mention a beautiful one. Tks

  • not totally wrong. I see what you are saying. If you talk in absolute terms, Norway doesn't resemble the Soviet Union in any way. Nonetheless they are going further down that path as we are.

Their demographics and the fact that they do not police the world like Americans intend to do, has made it manageable for them for a couple of decades now.

Beautiful country, but I disagree on your enthusiasm about it. I grew up there, and regarldess of what I say, it is close ot my heart.

  • elasa yep, I checked your page - should have done it before - i can see you lived there but you cannot deny what I stated before. They rank number 1 big time. Been there many times but , since you hate high taxes, not the right place to live. I understand you are a libertarian? So is steve, my other friend here - I don't agree with savage capitalism...Check where it led the US.Peace. Chhers.

  • Capitalism did not lead the US anywhere. The US has not been a capitalist country for decades. I'd argue that it hasn't been a truly capitalist country in 96 years.

  • Good work. We need to hear more arguments like this in the West.

  • The white imperialist bastard was SO condescending.

  • Lol. To be fair, maybe that's how all Swedish politicians would come across when talking in a 2nd language.

But yeah he is a big advocate of hurling money at Africa even though he admits in the video that it hasn't worked.

  • Aid can only be a temporary solution to allow Africa to devise an exit strategy. But most solutions proposed by NGOs and Govts would have us believe that an exit isn't possible and that Africa must continue on this same path of dependence forever.

it is good to see people speaking out about this.

  • A refreshing new approach. The way forward is is to learn financial stability through trade, rather than the proverbial "throwing money at them" approach.

  • She is my new hero.

  • Very well said. Thank you.

  • Thank you Dambisa.

You said it all and i am satisfied. As young Africans, it is our time to lead Africa on the right Direction even if the problems of Africa is quite diverse and complicated.

    Keep up the good Job

  • I'd need to really see how much of the decline in Africa is due to funding and how much is to other factors. Nobody mentioned what the declines majors factors were. She just mentioned that America has been giving aid for awhile and Africa has been in job decline for awhile. she didn't state if there was a definitive connection. No I'm not a key mugabe supporter. Also, what happens if America doesn't give any aid and no money at all gets trickled down to the African people?

  • ok let me get this right according to raymond, what he is saying is yes i know that the aid money is destroying your continent and making it worse and i agree with you, but im not going to stop sending it and i dont plan to create an end date for aid. Thats what he just said right. And if u reply to this please give me your reason why he didnt just say what i just said.

  • No that's not what he said. He said it's part of the problem. And who knows how much of the problem it is. She says a lot. I'm skeptical. Also, maybe he thinks that the money that does get used to help far outweighs the money in scandals. I don't think he's out to screw anyone and would just give the money away for no reasons and he obviously know about that corruption. Also, it sunds like "her" governement sucks. Whose fault is that? The white dudes for helping? I dont think so.

  • Well if the money is making it worse then they need to pull out, if a treatment thats ment to help is causing more problem and making the patient sicker(poorer) over the last few months ( for africa 60 years in decline due to the white mans help) as well as corrupt leaders who live off this aid. So yes the western world either needs to change its policies because we africans cant make our leaders do it, so the only person who can is the person paying them their salaries.

  • As long as they keep funding them, the situation will get worse. I take it that ur a key supporter of mugabe then.
