I own an R3, and it's definitely not as amazing as you describe it... hell, the MicroKorg with the MS2K engine sounds better in my honest opinion! The radias engine is great in the Radias, but very limited in the XL/R3, whereas the MS2K sounds nice warm and analog in both the MS2K and MK!
I never had a chance to try the XL or the actual RADIAS, but the R3 has worked fine for me. I couldn't tell you that it's worse than the microKorg. I had a micro in my possession for about a month, and I couldn't say that there is that much of a difference. I don't have a side/side comparison, but all the micro presets on the R3 sound the same to me as the micro. The MAIN reason I chose an R3 over the micro in the first place was full size keys. Its my main midi controller.
@TenThousandFeetTall I'm talking purely about sound. Obviously, interface wise, the R3 is better.
It also has more features like Mod Seq.
I don't judge a synth by presets. What I'm saying is, if you made a sound on the MK, and put the exact parameters in the R3, the MKs sound engine sounds better than the R3s IMHO.
I never did a side-by-side compare of the two, but I couldn't notice a difference really. Correct me if I'm wrong, but they're both emulated synths, so I'm not sure why there would be a difference either. Not to undermine the micro at all....I can ABSOLUTELY see why it has grown a bit of a cult following. With prices the way they are though, it made more sense to buy an R3 or even the MS-2000 to me. Wish I could have just bought the RADIAS really. But I be poor T_T
the Microkorg (MS2K engine) sounds a bit different from the R3 (radias engine). The filters on the MS2K engine, while digital like the Radias, were specifically designed to emulate the sound of the MS20, lending a warmer tone to MS2K synths. The radias ones weren't.
How many different sounds are possible to make from scratch with this??Overall how many can you make. Over 1000 or infinate amount. This or the Alesis micron or Akai MiniAK??
I don't know anything about the akai....but the Alesis micron seems to be more of a FM sounding synth. I don't like the location of the pitch wheel on it. Some swear by it though.
The R3 is a virtual analog synth with built in effects (lots of em!). You can make endless sounds, and program all sorts of different arp patterns for movement in your sounds. It comes with software to see a full program screen. I'd suggest this over any keyboard based synth that I know of under $800.
to be honest, I'm not big into vocoders so can't really give advice, but you can do a lot with it. Check the korg msg boards and the manual. I like the synth capabilities on this, but it has really shined as my midi controller.
The 3 patch, the bass, so good. 4 was very solid until 3:27. Everything else seemed meh. Work on getting better at keyboarding rather then mixing sound, I guarantee you your sounds will love you.
Can you control the bpm speed ? Can you see the value on one of the screens ? Thanks.
