  • Was everyone OK on the cargo ship?

  • I'm a sailor myself, I'm in the Navy reserves and I'm doing the RYA Coastal Yachtmasters. I know all too well that accidents happen on the sea. But this is just a classic example of poor seamanship.

The most embarrassing thing about this is that the yacht was commanded by an ex-naval commander and his crew were all commercially endorsed yachtmasters!

  • To be a top yachtsman one has to take slight risks occasionally. If you want a safe easy stress-free life then a tanker captain would be the way to go.

  • @857frank

    You know nothing

  • Guys, guys! The poor man/woman just wanted to add a welcoming streamer to the ship!

  • If I was driving the yacht it would have been the orange ship that crumpled, not my fucking yacht. Fuck orange ships. Don't let them push you around.

  • isn't it true that cargo ships always have the right of way over recreational ships?

  • In this case and time the sail boat was the more maneuverable craft and there for was at fault. IMO that was a case of stupid.

  • Seriously, what did you think would happen? crusing around in front of a cargo ship? wtf?

  • retard steering yacht

  • who´s fault is it than?

  • That's a novel way to raise a flag...

  • look 0:17 sec lolll

  • Stupid pricks on the yacht ought to be banned from the water for life!!

  • Poor bugger on the sailboat. First of all he/she stuffs up big time and nearly kills their crew and wrecks their boat. Then gets to watch it on You Tube for the rest of their life ( along with tens of thousands of other people ). All up that equals a bad day on the water.

  • First he hits him, and then he steals his sail too! Haha.

  • Agreed like airplane needs to be airborne first and fast enough just to steer it.... Take off at 180 mph then they start from there with full thrust...

  • Yacht skipper to ship, "STARBOARD!" Ship to yacht, "we cannot turn that fast, sir." 12 year old winch handle boy, "dad, don't you think you aught to tack now?"

"No son, we have "starboard tack!"

"But dad, they aren't racing...and besides, they aren't sailing neither..."

    "Quiet son! Do your job"

    <sounds of screeching and ripping."

"Dad, when we get ashore, either you get a new hob, or I do."

  • @vibratingstring Fucking brilliant!!

  • Comment removed

  • Wow, I knew yachties usually had NO idea about the rules but some of the comments here. Yachts do NOT have right of way over everyone! IDIOTS

  • I was there in the water in a speed boat, it was crazy, the wind just dropped and they couldn't do anything. It was soooo loud, i couldn't believe it! :(

  • So what part of "might makes right" doesn't this sailboat understand? A tanker like this can take up to a couple of MILES to slow down to a stop. Yeah, sailboats have the right of way in an even match, but jeez -- when you're 20,000 pounds and the big red thing is over 100,000 tons -- duh.

  • @crone49

In any case. Sail and motorboats must always yield from transsportships such as oiltankers, passengercarriers and such. So the captain of the crashing sailboat is a complete moron. That's basically why seasertificate is required.

  • @Adelgeek In the U.S. many states now have "safe boating certificates" and the statistics may show some improvement (I'd have to look it up). Nevertheless, I get nearly run down every time I sail in the $%#$ing river.

  • @crone49 Um, no, not sails have right except might. not so simple actually. Sails often give way to power depending on circumstances. Read COLREGS and your national interpretation to gain understanding.

  • Sailboat: "STARBOARD!!!!" Capta

    in of Ship: "TONNAGE!!!"

  • "Quick, what's "STARBOARD" in Phillipino?"

  • @brennangregorygmail hehe.. its the same as in norwegian and spanish : Styrbord.

But thats not the thing. all big ships entering the Solent / thorn channel have an no go zone around them stating that if any smaller craft enter this zone they are in violation of the regional rules for the entrance to southampton.. as such its the small crafts fault.. bear in mind that Hanne is loaded (ca 150000 tons) and with escort tug and escort policeboat.. she uses min. 10 minutes to stop with full astern.

  • @Dekkerhus

Her fastest way of stopping is doing a 180 to 360 degree turn - alas - that is not an option in the Solent.

  • bloody hell. completely skipper's fault.

  • i saw this happen, what it doesn't show is that there is actually a tugboat behind it with a line attached to the stern of the tanker trying to slow it down. It entered the harbor way too fast

  • @freerunnerproduction

You can't steer a ship if it goes too slowly...

  • :(

  • @MrGttinc Thrasymachus would certainly think so...

  • Owebama was at the helm, this is how he drives our economy!

  • one thing about boating.....dont get in the way of the BIGGER ships. DUH!

  • @MrMongolianMonkey Easy, easy... sheeesh. Can't we all just get al... awe fuck it.

  • didnt the tanker have rights, because it was the Leeward boat?

  • @MrMongolianMonkey Maybe they shouldn't have a shipping lane in the middle of a yachting area.

  • After striking the sailboat, someone in the tanker should have yelled down "hey, you scratched my anchor....................................

  • without words!

  • Two objects cannot occupy the same space at the same time.

  • The tanker is owned by a Norwegian company, and they made a statement to media there telling that the ship was escorted by a police boat in front and a tug behind it. The tanker also used the horn a lot to warn sailing yachts and other vessels. A ship that size cannot turn or slow down fast, and there was nothing the captain could do about this situation.

  • If you are sailing in the Solent and have a pink spinnaker flying then you deserve everything that's coming to you

  • Was That BP guy on the ship? Expensive miscalculation..

  • If we were getting our oil from hemp this never would have happened.

  • @MisterThomasPAINE2 ? Good luck with that.

  • @szore It's the miracle plant, and it will take a miracle to for it to be utilized for it's industrial purposes. The funny part is these sailboats, with the exception of the metal and glass, could be made from hemp. The sails, ropes, the hull and the glue and wood holding it together, and paint too. And I've heard it puts a smile on your face when smoke or baked into brownies.

  • @MisterThomasPAINE2 Thanx for the lesson. The smile part, I'm well acquainted with :-)

  • @MisterThomasPAINE2 So long as they don't have yacht races in hemp - wherever that is.

  • @MisterThomasPAINE2

    Is hemp another Islamic country?

  • @MisterThomasPAINE2 LOL Funny.

  • hahaha clearance from the yacht club? He doesn't give a fuck about the yacht club - no does he have any requirement to

  • @GeorgieWorgiey I'm just saying a simple call to the Master of the Yacht Club "permission to set sail Sir" would averted this. Power steering should be fitted if he thinks it's fun to sail up and down the Solent when serious races are on.

  • @857frank You really are clueless aren't you?. You are not on this planet. Are you a yachtie? If so, you should know the International Collision Regs, particularly Rule 9b. Go on, look it up on Google.

You think ship's don't have power steering? How else are we going to shift a rudder that weighs 100 tons? The ship probably weighs 150,000t, you think she can 'swerve'?

The ships, Southampton Ports and the Pilots don't give two shits about the yacht club. Nor should they...

  • I'd be interested to know if the tanker captain got clearance from the yacht club before setting sail, if so the club could conceivably share a small part of the blame. There should certainly be tighter controls over who can sail through club waters and when.

  • The skipper was reckless, irresponsible, and most of all: WRONG! It doesnt matter he was in a race. A ship with limited space of maneuver has the right of passage.

  • It's like having a roadrace that crosses several busy railroad tracks.

  • Tanker FTW!

  • I agree, but this race shouød have been moved or directed. Or the shipping lanes should be closed during the race. I personally think that the sailboat is to get the blame. Shure hope this video scares daredevils out there.

  • I am a boater and have been for 40 years. There is something about a lot of sailboaters that think they always have the right of way. Some kind of demented mind set, period.

  • Is there any truth in the scurrilous rumour that this yacht was a Royal Navy entry?

  • Rule 2 cont

    b) In construing and complying with these Rules due regard shall be had to all dangers of navigation and collision and to any special circumstances, including the limitations of the vessels involved, which may make a departure from these Rules necessary to avoid immediate danger

  • Rule no 2 Responisibility

    (a) Nothing in these Rules shall exonerate any vessel, or the owner, master or crew thereof, from the consequences of any neglect to comply with these Rules or of the neglect of any precaution which may be required by the ordinary practice of seamen, or by the special circumstances of the case

  • @vegard641Rule no 1 Etiquette

    (a) Nothing in these Rules shall exonerate any working class vessel, or the owner, master or crew thereof, from the conseqences of any neglect to show respect for his betters whenever they decide to engage in any aquatic activity or from the consequences of the neglect to re-arrange his schedule to avoid getting in the way.

  • @vegard641 also rule 9 ...dont f**k with a chem tanker in a narrow channel or faiway..that twit deserved what he or she got!

  • WAFI = Wind Assisted F*cking Idiot!!! I've watched it quite a few times and I still can't believe the stupidity and negligence of the Yacht skipper. He should have put his crew first and his ego second.

  • Brits in sailing yachts = bad combination. Norwegians in tankers = rulers of the seas.

  • was the capt in the head

  • @857frank, you haven't a clue have you. Your arrogance is typical of those who clog up the Solent, ignoring all the rules. The 'upper class' you speak of obviously lack intelligence; going out to sea not knowing their arses from their elbows let alone how to conduct themselves. Still, the authorities will throw the book at that yacht skipper.

  • WHAT THE HEK HE WAS THINKING??? HAA RIGHT NOW THE OIL SHIP IS GOING TO PUT THE BRAKES !! I CAN MAKE IT !!

  • when yachts are racing, it is only politeness to allow them sea room when they are on the wrong tack by others, not a god given right!!. and certainly not a bloody great tanker. Yachts in Cowes week dont own the bloody solent, the number one requirement at all times is SEAMANSHIP, and knowledge of the rules. The frightening thing is there are lots more pratts like that out there. He may struggle to get a crew in the future!!!!

  • 857frank what a silly comment my friend. The Tanker is the stand on vessel so in the first place the yacht skipper should be keeping clear. As you get close to a collision it is both parties responsibilities to avoid a collision by all available means, which in the tankers case means none as he wouldn't have a hope. Yacht skipper may also not have accounted for the tankers potentially huge blind spot. Just in case you don't know this isn't yachty or jolly pirate etiquette - it's the law (IRPCS)

  • @robbyc0 Talking of etiquette the working class in the orange boat (just noticable coming in from the right in the video) should have shown more respect to the upper classes conducting a yacht race especially as they are the type who make the laws in the first place. Docking their caps and ordering "full astern" would have been a nice gesture whatever the IRPCS may state.

  • I bet it was a charter boat!

  • he probably forgot to read "How to avoid huge ships" book. (it really exist)

  • @exodus279 i've actually read that book.

  • A new rule ' Fibreglass gives way to steel' . Go back to London the lot of you , you can't sail or race .

  • Lol silly yachties if they spend less times up their own backsides there wouldn't be scenes like this. The way they talk about sailing when they are in my taxi you would think they were Admirals lol now we know these are load city toffs doing this do they can tell their mummies ' oh ya mummy I was sailing ya I will collect my cuffs and collars this evening. Oh mummy I crashed the boat oh some silly commercial cargo ship did not give way to sail, how arrogant of them mummy.' Bloody fools.

  • They were very lucky to come out of it as well as they did. I've been working on the Solent with various shipping and some Yachties have no idea about rules of the road or navigation. I'd go as far as saying they don't have a lot of common sense either. You get in front of one of these tankers then it takes a lot to stop one and the idiot who goes across his bow is going to come off worse if their calculated risk doesn't work out.

  • Tanker mostlikely can't reach 15 knots of speed while navigating a NARROW channel which it would have been for a vessel of this size. it would Have just a few metres below it. There would have been a moving prohibited zone around the vessel as enforced by ABP Southampton who are the local harbour authority.

As per the colregs a sailing vessel or a vessel under 20metres shall not impeed a vessel over over 20 metres while navigating a narrow channel. Therefore personally the yacht skipper should

  • I think the skipper deserves a Darwin Award................... although there was a rumour in Cowes tonight that they had a steering failure?!

  • the comments here reflect the mentality of as lot of these yachtsmen, these vessels are restricted by draft, if only they were to read the rules. i am surprised that no bloody idiot has quoted the rule that power gives way to sail. they were bloody idiots and got what they deserved. lucky to be alive

  • If the Yacht was racing then perhaps the Race Office may have a certain responsibility. He should have contacted the QHM and the Port Harbour Master to acknowledge the Race Course and also Prediced Shipping. Once this has been investigated more rules will be issued and you will not get race officers taking responsibility to run Yacht races - the begining of the end!

  • @Scottishskier cowes week racing cannot avoid shipping entirely and still be racing off cowes, as the RYS line is kind of across the shipping lane!

The commitee do postpone starts to allow ships to pass, but I believe this was as the yacht was nearing the finish, and in fact probably trying to get in front of the ship to get to the line!

dodging shipping is just one of the tactical aspects of racing in cowes week, and thankfully most of us do avoid the ships most of the time!

  • Good point, if the Tanker was exceeding 15 knots he should have been prepared to go full astern for a few seconds upon sighting the yacht.

  • 15 knot speed restriction in Solent for Cowes Week - QHM Portsmouth notice last week. How fast was Tanker going?

  • Bloody wafi! Lol..it's a busy commercial shipping lane...who's less manoeuvrable, who's bigger, who's going to cause more damage..its just common sense! Haha..."Tanker should have swerved"..idiot! Will see you in the KnQ for a pint soon sam..

  • "The tanker should have swerved".... yachts have no rights over commercial shipping vessels in the solent regardless of whether it was an important race or who's under engine/ sail..

A very bad call on behalf of the skipper for endagering his crew in that way.

  • Tanker, swerved - you really have no idea do you?

  • @Blackshod Not a clue.

  • The tanker should have swerved to avoid that yacht when they saw it was an important race.

  • Maybe if they painted it a brighter colour ??????
