The purpose of a monetary system is to account exchanges in units of value so that price stability is achieved. The USA unit of value is $. In order to assure stability as easily as possible, national currency should cost as little as possible to produce, so that it can be produced or destroyed at no expense by the monetary system's managers.

Using a rare metal or other expensive commodity as currency lowers the ability of managers to keep prices stable.

The only references to gold or silver used as payments of debt is in article 1 section 10 as a limitation placed upon states. State populations must use ONLY our national dollars but may pay debts in gold or silver.

Congress sets the value in dollars of everything, including gold and silver in Article 1 Section 8.

So a private mint can pay debts in its pretty coins of gold or silver BUT THEY ARE NOT DOLLARS unless Congress originates and sets the value of them.

NOBODY makes dollars but USA.

Just to play devils advocate. All of us are using Federal Reserve Notes/Fiat Currency to pay our bills, not gold and silver. So in order to "abolish" this, you have to have a huge majority of the population to simply stop accepting the notes and stop using them. Thats it.

It's obvious that the Federal Reserve (illegal government agency) doesn't want any competition. He's just another example of a political prisoner, detained for daring to compete with the thieves of this country. Only the government is ordered to trade in gold and silver, all other people are under NO obligation to use any particular form of currency and in fact have the right to accept any form of currency they so choose.

@erindrake2010 Exactly. There is no law requiring us to use FRN's even though they are authorized under 12 U.S.C. § 411. This is the same with the IRS and taxes, there is no obligation to actually file for taxes or pay them even thought the govt. has the power under the 16th Amendment to collect them. Its all about willful compliance. Don't comply and they will imprison you. Comply and you can still be imprisoned. Either way, you have a gun to your head. Time to abolish their system.
