@Sabrakid Arafat's cousin, Grand Mufti, Haj Amin al Husseini was the one to declare it the 3rd holiest site in the 1930's. It was rebuilt in the mid 7th century by the conquering Arabs for the benefit of the Christians possible to wean them towards Islam. From then it was used as a church. More recently revisionist history has taken over from facts and it's current status has been popularized since post- Suez Crisis. The Qur'an does not mention it. ("farthest" does not achieve this")
