As far as some doubting that Manny mixes with plugins, I worked with Grammy Award winning mix eng, Leslie Brathwaite, he mixes prob 40% of the hip-hop & r&b records out, & he almost exclusively uses plugins. Along with some SSL 9000 board eq. It's being done more than most cats think.
@Phattazzass The secret weapons of today are the plugins>most some have Hardware counterparts, and they sound almost identical. Waves are my choice of plugins>but I mix 100% in the box>every mix>no Hardware at all>There are tricks and techniques you can use to achieve that analogue sound.
@ShortScopeBoy thats really true man.... I just completed a mix...and I know it will be heard on mp3 formats and soundcloud.... and what not... crappy headphones... but thats why you must mix for those standards too...
holy CRAP am i seriously seeing the ACTUAL PROJECT FILE FOR UMBRELLA... THE HIT SONG UMBRELLA... not that it's even one of my favorite songs but just the fact that i'm seeing the REAL PROJECT FILE ON VIDEO... OMG JIZZ.
@ShortScopeBoy Well on of the great things about technology is that this guy was smart enough to upload the vid so that i could be viewed in HD, which equals better vid AND audio quality! We hear the music! Don't ever Stop!
Before you guys go trying to clown this guy, the most genius artistic people usually aren't great at speaking. They moreso visualize what they're saying... but it's hard to put words to it. It's like asking somebody to explain "What does color look like?".
So yeah... I appreciate this guy sharing some of his tips!
It's a shame that most of the people who listen to this type of music won't even notice or care about the EQ, stereo-phasing-delays and the synth tracks that this guy's worked so hard on.
@dairniel That's the beauty of a great mix: a great talented engineer allows the song to sing itself. A non-schooled ear doesn't have to recognize all of this to appreciate it; but you can bet a person will notice a mix they don't like!
This is why people should invest more in their home speakers than their new iPhones and take more time to *listen* to the music rather than *hearing* it through their shitty earphones on their way home from school or work.
@ShortScopeBoy Well I think that's the mixing/mastering engineer's greatness that the song sounds good even on a crappy laptop speakers. You probably have never listened to a raw unmixed, unmastered song to really compare. During the mixing process the song is in fact prepared to sound good on every possible medium.
I understand you hehe... I really don't like to see people with earbuds, I hate this... the minimum for me is some Sony MDR-V500, MINIMUM :P at least you get the low freqs and more quality mid and high.
@ shortscopeboy: Not for long, there's a revolution in the headphones/earphones market right now. Check out 'beats by dr dre headphones'. I tried them and it sounded like i've never heard the music on my Ipod before... Hopefully soon the industry'll catch on and consumers will benefit.
It makes me curious to see what the future holds for computer recording, because the only reason Pro Tools became standard was due to non-host based mix and effects processing. Thus allowing much higher track and effect count. Now as computer technology goes over the top I wonder if DSP processing may eventually become obsolete, as nuts as that might sound. I simply hate the overpriced monopoly pro tools has created.
Dang... this vid is a constant reminder on what you really need, to become a semi-pro producer (not composer) because.... i could at least understand everything he said.
pro tools pwnz steinberg stuff. unless you're into post or wanna rock a better interface for the money. and i'm surprised to see all the clip lights on in his mix. i though i was rockin hard gettin the occasional clip off kick and snare
yeah but is understandable, do you know how many things he had on his mind? well if i think Umbrella, i know is gonna get complicated to explain the mixing process, so many details dont you think?
DO PEOPLE JUST DISLIKE JUST TO DISLIKE?!

Sure he got all the nice Hardware EQ´s from Neve, SSL etc. and then he uses PlugIns. No way I believe that.

Not to piss on the parade-But it looks like he is mixing all stems?
Not much of a challenge-I'd say
I don't think I would be able to tell the difference on an mp3 player if MM mixed
it or a student!
