  • Max, thank u for ur advice. I´m playing UMVC3 on my PS3 and thought about buying an arcade stick because of playing to slow (still canßt wave dash xD im new in this game) and i thought an arcade stick would help me their.Beside i like ur shows and its amazing how u and all the other guys play this game. Its looking awesome.

  • omfg the intro had me literally dieing of laughter. i dont know if its because Vergil's yelling before he gets hit or what but it made me lol so hard.

  • Good thing I got an arcade controller stock for $60 of $70 cheap, but I'm gonna use for a later date on Street Fighter x Tekken and little on UMVC3.

  • All of a sudden I feel either like a badass or a broke-ass for being able to play effectively using an emulator and a keyboard...

  • A tournament i went to I didnt had an Arcade Stick, so i brought a PS3 controller..

It was Tekken 6.. And there alot of guys with arcade stick telling me i was noob, i suck coz i have a controller blah blah blah... Next thing they knew I ended the tournament in 1st place and i shoved it in their face

  • typos o .0

  • I use to play marvel super heroes vs street fighter, marvel vs capcom 1 and 2 all in arcades but then i remember mvc2 came out for consoles. Thats when i started playing with controllers and eventually i got when better with controllers then arcade sticks. I would have to say that playing with a arcade stick is definitely more entertaining and its how i grew up playing fighting games so every now and then i'll plug in my arcade stick but when i play to win i use my controller.

  • there is a arcade stick on amazon for ps3 or xbox its wwe brawl stick its very cheap but worth it the image is ok if u like wwe but you can easly take it off like i did it is REALLY easy to put new buttons in and mod it out the buttons will last about a year but then u MIGHT have to replace them but otherwise cheap £20.00 arcade stick

  • Well the thing is in Arcade sticks, it's easier to play since some characters require you to hold buttons, It's kind of harder to do that on the controller since the buttons on an arcade stick are all layed out. It really is preference but yeah you can be better with arcade sticks then with controllers. Doesn't mean a controller is completely useless. It does make it more fun playing with an arcade stick.

  • It b cool if umvsc cam out for ipod n i phones

  • JAGO KILLER INSTINCT THEME!

  • I played my fair share of arcade fighting games but moved on to using a pad for years. I bought a SFIV tournament stick because I could not stand the 360s d-pad, it must be the most feeble controller I've ever used for a fighting game

  • Arcade Sticks are the Turtle Beachs of fighting games

  • I switched to stick because I like my buttons all on the face of the controller. I only just switched so I'm still learning. I switch between stick and PS3 controller for specific games, so yea. I think stick is better, but w/e.

  • @2:50 awesoome teleport

  • I've just seen Lythero in one of Miles923's videos. AAAAAWWWWW YYYYYEEEEEEAAAAA!!!!!!!

  • Tekken Tag Tournament 1 music!

  • Obviously when arcades were around used to play w the stick(Xmen:CoA is still one of my top arcade games) but I've been using the controller since all of these great arcade, fighting games have started coming to consolesso now I don't see any point in going back. Also it seems the fight sticks would move around alot since they aren't connected to that huge arcade base. Is this true or no?

  • Controllers ftw

  • This is literally the first fighting game I've ever gotten into in all 22 years of my life, and I only bought it around mid-December. I can't see me getting hardcore into more fighting games, so that being said I think I'm just going to stick with a PS3 controller. No sense spending an extra $150 for a good stick when I don't really need one.

Even if it did make me a little bit better, I just don't think it's worth the money. I play for fun anyway, not to win.

  • I am used to the controller but when doing the shoryuken motion etc. hurts my thumb a bit. The arcade stick is good for mashing buttons to deal extra damage on hypers.

  • *sigh* I think I need an arcade for my Zero. I've won matches with him using just the controller, but the way I play him is just too basic and predictable. But if I do get one, it will take me months to get the hang of it and even more for learning the combos. I honestly don't know whether should get one or not.

  • @s0nic925 if its for combos then dont get the fight stick. ive been a controller player before i got my stick and i just had to adjust my button layout for zero. i only got a fightstick just because its more fun and makes me feel like im in an arcade

  • I have always played all my games with a controller but i heared that u need an arcade for UMvC3 is that true?

  • i dont need a stick i already rip people with my ps3 controller lol

  • that first match was so confusing, his vergil was dressed as dante, his dante was dressed as vergil, and his vergil was normal, i kept on pausing to see what was going on

  • I grew up playing arcade sticks whenever I went to the arcade. But, when I got the game for my console, I wouldn't play the game anymore at the arcade because I owned it. So I learned how to play controls. I'm think I'm good at the game. My current record is 278 to 96. And I only use my PS3 control.

  • My one thing about using a controller vs a stick is that the thumb is the slowest digit on your hand.

  • I got a decent arcade stick, but as mentiond its a complete turnaround if you've playd a pad ur whole life (0_0)

  • I love that he puts Nova theme at the end of every vid.

  • I have a Arcade stick what configuration should I have the buttons on?

  • the music is from tekken tag tournament

  • Went to a tournament with a controller,everybody laughed at me :(.

  • lol. a fightstick is obviously better in the longrun. doctordoom on a controller would be mass fail. a fightstick is more durable, more responsive. how are u gonna airdash on a controller opposed to a fightstick especially with a character like doctordoom? your best best is to use the joystick which is slow and horrible. and would probably break and wear out ALOT faster than a fightstick.

  • Comment removed

  • a blue Dante and a red Virgil....WTF!!

  • BIONIC!!! nut punch...?

  • Do you believe wanting to learn how to use a arcade stick is worth it if its merely just for having a universal controller of sorts? I currently play on 360 pad, my execution isnt too bad, I can do most combos i find even those with zero that require stuff such as buster switching, however when I go to play on my friends ps3 my execution drops by a good bit merely cause the analog is in a different position and throws me off. Would getting an arcade stick to remedy this situation worth it?

  • what's the song?

  • @masterjosered the first one at the beginning is Jagos Theme ( killer instinct , super nintendo game ) there's another song at the end, its also K.I.

  • In terms of stick vs pad, if you have spent time learning how to play on a pad, go for it. But between two equal player one on a stick and one on a pad, i would reccon the one on the stick would win.

I got my fighting stick free when a i bought tekken 6 back in the day, it got some bad reviews for being 'light' and not sturdy. But it is still in great condition after playing through 2 years of street fighter, Marvel vs Capcom and tekken. You can get it now for about £50 with a copy of tekken6

  • which arcade stick do u guys recommend i jus wana rey it out

  • keyboard beats 'em all.

  • for some reason i cant do quarter circle turns with a 360 controller (i use the D pad) would a stick make it easier?

  • Yea ive been playing with a controller forever. But let me do say this Plinking in street fighter is 10x harder on a controller than an arcade stick

  • Lol punch you in the nuts!

  • As far back as I can remember I've been using a controller. I fought in arcades on the weekends, but always played friends more so. A controller is just natural. I fight with #1 Chris/Strider/Akuma ... #2 Trish/X-23/Amaterasu .... With a lot of time in training Ive been able to use Trish's double jump combos with it.

  • IMO:

    controllers: easy movement inputs

    arcade sticks: easy attack inputs

  • @SirTierOne It's exact opposite for me lol. I feel like arcade sticks are much more precise and smooth for movements but controllers are easy for attack inputs because the buttons are so close together.

  • @Mugen123456789 so i guess it really is just personal preference, I love the way the d-pad on my ps3 controller feels, but then when im pressing buttons for advance combos, like c viper where you have to have inputs held while at the same time mashing buttons to keep your combo up til you need to let that charged button go, my hand feels all scrunched up on the controller, arcade stick is just easier for me for that reason

  • Snapback win was nuts!

  • i disagree with you completely max, controllers aren't made for fight games for a reason. you don't feel the range of motion when you are using a controller, trust me i tried with a controller for a long time and i just can't be consistent with finishing my commands. i switch to a fight stick and the likelihood that i drop a combo now is wayyyy less! SURE YOU CAN BE GOOD WITH A CONTROLLER BUT I THINK IF WE JUST TAKE A SURVEY AT EVO OR SOMETHING, YOU WELL SEE A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF PPL W/ STICK

  • @wRicecubew Caps locking doesnt prove your point, and Sure many people may use a Stick that goes into a tourny, but you can be just as good with a controller, it just might take longer to gain the skill. and Majority vote doesn't mean that the right thing to do, or the best thing.

  • 8:50 Epic Nut Punch

  • hulk doesnt give a fuck about dante combos xD

  • been playing online all day on xboxlive and i swear i have out of about 50 players or so 47 of them had vergil/and or wesker on it. smfh

  • I play hardcore controller because I have no money to save because of rent and other things. But when my friends an I get together to save up money to eat out and stuff we get consoles and bring them to our local arcade so that way both audiences can participate. We have like 12 controllers and 3 actual arcade sticks (none of which are mine). My skills with controller to others using stick are usually around a 3-5 win/lose ratio, so not bad nor great either.

  • killer instink music lets go!

  • It is true, though, that certain things are easier on arcade-style controllers, such as holding down one attack button for a charged move while continuing to tap others. Granted, changing the control mapping in-game can help with doing that on the standard controllers, but that usually has to be adjusted to a configuration that is specific to one's team. Of course, the standard controllers also have easier X-Factor activation, easier wave dashing, and such. Like the man says, it's a trade-off.

  • i have to us a fightstcik now its just not fun when you dont use em on fighting games

  • the only problem for pads is that they aren't designed to resist heavy mashing or repeated use Dragon Punch moves...

I'd gladly buy a pad especially designed for Capcom/SNK fighting games (ultra resistant)

  • On a pad its so hard to do dragon punch motions!

  • @UberBlackMan you only need some practice, thats all

  • I will completely agree! I bought an arcade stick almost 9 months ago and I barely use it. I tried using it to play Vanilla MVC3 and I suck with it. I use it for Mortal Kombat and I'm actually decent with it so yeah I know exactly what u mean. I am so much better with the controller. I can't pull off some combos but only because I still can't get the timing down but other than that I'm pretty good with the controller!

  • I think a lot of it depends on who you're playing. Say you're Honda. Mashing out Hands on a pad can be a nightmare, whereas on a stick you're able to piano. Also, in other games you have characters like BB's Arakune who need to hold down multiple buttons mid combo and make extensive use of negative edge. Having more than one button finger helps immensely here.

  • YOOOOOOOO NYC MAYHEM FOUGHT YOU???????? wow...I gotta let his brother (my friend in which we both idolize you) know about this

  • maxi have you ever played king of fighters 13

  • I like sega controllers, so I'm getting a fighting commander pro 3

  • "When I PUNCH YOU IN THE NUTS!"

  • u know i was gonna switch off of a controller cause i see alot of vids of online warrior and other players and u guys can OTG and OTW for days and make the super crazy air combos that link into awesome finishes and i tried so hard and i cant do it the way u guys do, i figured it was cause when it comes to a controller u can only move ur thumb so fast compared to moving ur wrist on an arcade stick. im ok but i wanna be better than that but i've tried the arcade stick and im horrible lol, i dunno.

  • Would you, Max, or anyone else recommend modding a MadCatz TE stick to an octagonal gate, or is the square gate better? And I'm looking for which gate is just considered better overall, specifically for playing UMVC3.

  • @Chibisavv nah, too lazy... plus I don't want other Joystick parts that aren't Sanwa ("generic", from local arcade machines on our country) :P

  • @ajmm2991 import them, anyway, thats still more cheaper

  • I use SF4 Pad it's pretty good might switch to Stick but I'm in no hurry

  • I can't even do a shoryu motion on a 360 pad because it's a mushy piece of shit. Makes Super Turbo impossible.

  • I use stick for MvC3, 360 pad for BlazBlue. Seems strange but I picked up stick 6 months into the latter, whereas for MvC3 it was there from the beginning. It's only an input device; if someone can be a top tier player with Kinect (in the future/modding) or something, more power to them.

  • I USE A SF4 TE STICK I WON IN A TOURNEY AND I LOVE IT

  • Guys, I'm a very big fan of MvsC3 i just brought the tournament edition of "Mortal Kombat" (it was because there was an stick controller on it) but what a surprise when i opened the box and saw the buttons, it has a different configuration, can somebody tell me if that could be use it for MvsC3???

  • @carlosiquino i was told that it can be used for MvC3 and SSF4 but its preferred not to be used for it cus of the weird button layout so if you dont mind using a awkward button layout then yes you can use that stick hope that helps

  • LOL, Jago theme during UMvC video. +1 Killer Instinct.

  • 8:08 PLAY IT LOUD

  • I agree with you about the arcade stick thing. I started on an SNES pad (like a butt load of others my age) with Street Fighter II. I enjoyed going to the arcade a lot but if I wanted a "serious" match you would have to come to my house or me to yours and we can duke it out on the console. The only "stick" I would ever be interested in is a Hitbox since it seems like the transition wouldn't be too difficult for me (I play on PC too with the keyboard). Don't plan on dropping my pad though.

  • @Miles923 My only problem comes with especific directions... you know diagonals and some more difficult SFIV motions, sometimes I dont click in the completely correct motion and I dash either horizontally or vertically, so I ask isn't there some kind of controller since I suck with arcade sticks Im new to fighting games no arcade XP) I give you the standard gamecube controller as an example. It had some kind of sockets for the 8 basic directions so it was very easy to move that way.

  • I know why i get beat by scrubs... its cause i use thor :(

  • @broli720 Master his throws!! im not a pro and neither good with Thor but scrubs aren't a prob they always fall for the throws =P

  • @SH4D0WBattousai when i say scrubs i don't mean noobs. i mean those 4th and 5th lords that use wesker, dante, doom :/

  • i find the controls to be the hardest thing for me in fighting games, i always seem to mess of the shoryuken motion. I've been meaning to get a stick but I need to save cash for more important things sadly.

  • Thanks for that controller/stick advice max, makes me feel a bit more comfortable with my controller now :)

  • i prefer controllers, i can use arcades sticks, but its hard to find a good one, and they are expensive.

  • hey max can you use some viewtiful joe cause theres almost no footage of him on youtube :D

  • Yo max i want to see Doom and Wesker go at it again in another rap battle specially now that wesker is actually even better and so is Doom lmao thumbs up make it happen!!!!

  • Ok yeah there is a fake Max out there, gamertag MaximillianDood. Just an FYI if you all get in this party make sure you look at the name.

  • Yeah, I've tossed around the question of fighting stick vs pad in a lot of directions. I play on the pad, and I'll admit I've never been spectacular at them outside of my own circle of friends. The typical answers I always got were that sticks were by far superior to pads, and the unanimity of it had pretty much told me that something wasn't quite right, so I decided to stay with a standard controller. The only gripe I have with a controller is just the wear my thumb takes on the D-pad.

  • SHIT, I jizzed at 03:37, that was awesome. Eat Finger Lasers!

Also, "Dreamcast pad not great for fighting games"? I kinda disagree, it's the best one imo. It's really soft and easy to use.

  • Gotta love the Killer Insticnt song for this. "Let's do it now!"

    Great footage as always, Max.

  • I've seen alot of good Viewtiful Joes online and off. he is a good character and i never disrespect when i see one because i know the a**whuppins he's given me before. : P

Thanks for another great episode Max.

  • 2:51 is probably the funniest thing I've seen Wesker do.

  • I'm so much bad at fighting game. I don't want to buy a Arcade stick, I play fightning game for fun and not competition.

  • I too use a regular 360 pad and use Dante, Phoenix Wright (and obviously) Viewtiful Joe.

I won't be changing to an arcade stick, even if competitive gaming comes into the equation. They're just too big and clumsy for my liking. It'd be a pain to carry it around in places like tournaments.

  • @link3kokiri same. gg Viewtiful Joe btw.

  • @judegines Thanks :D

  • hey max these vids are awesome but could you possibly do an assist me on maybe on Dante or when you start playing Chris or somebody else cause that would be awesome great vids though

  • 00:05

    "Crack that whip!"

  • i use pad and i like having 1 button dashes. But i might get a stick for christmas, because i like the art on it, its a collectable for me, and im actually going to try using it

  • Jago.

  • Oh man Chris i would love to see you play as chris and learn to better play as him :D

  • Thats a snapback? LMFAO DAM

  • WolfKrome is a problem dam he has true skills

  • Oone of the main reasons why i quit mvc was this problem, im new to the series and playing with controler is an absolute bich its hard. i yet to try stick and it honestly looks alot easier but my friend told me its harder idk why, i yet to work with it and it all ready feels easier this was a problem. anyone who plays controler and is god at it i praise cause dantes combos r freaking insane to input.

  • @Nuance6 yeah dante combos are really annoying on a pad

  • @The111122222333333 lol, i use a pad and i still own dante :3

  • @judegines i can still do them on a pad but i find annoying sometimes but whatever some people are better

  • Hey Max I kind of disagree with your opinion on Sticks, if you play with a controller it becomes obvious that a lot special moves/combos are made tailored to the stick.

Trying to play a character like Pheonix Wright is extremely difficult using a controller because your fingers and right hand just have to be ridiculously active.

  • @fatrend

How so? I play phoenix wright on a pad and I fair just fine. Just because you don't know how to use a pad well doesn't mean anything.

With character's like phoenix wright, why not try claw-handing it? should solve your problem of gathering evidence right away.

Honestly the only advantage a stick will ever have over a pad is that it's universal, where as a pad generally has the advantage of hotkeys. That's seriously it.

  • @fatrend OBJECTION!

Even though I'm gonna get an Eightarc fight stick, soon (great brand, highly recommend them, they even sell dual-mod sticks at a decent price), it's possible to effectively use Nick with a pad. Just use 2 fingers for the 4 main attack buttons (mostly for evidence & the projectiles).

  • That nut punching has to be a .gif

  • I love how these are always both informative and enjoyably funny. Thanks you Max for helping me suck a little less each week.

  • Anyone has any tips for a controller player like me cause i can play ok but not to great

  • @x2DiceMan

Well since I play pad, how about I help you. What is the main thing you're having trouble with right now?

  • I'm a controller player and I'm really good with it. I've never used an arcade stick before, except for in arcades, but other than that, I'm really good with my controller. I mean, if I ever decided to use an arcade stick, it'll take time for me to get used to!

  • Comment removed

  • Using sticks does have some advantages over pads such as the ability to plink in sf4, or being able to hold a button while pressing others (e.g. when playing with Zero). However pad also has its advantages over a stick such as one-button-dash, one-button-throw/tech (sf4), etc. So it is definetily a matter of preferences and tastes

  • @EspecialistaSampe

Umm it's still possible for people with pads to play characters like zero. I play carl in bb, and I use to dabble in zero and Im a pad player. There are other ways to hold a pad you know? Claw handing, standard, over hand, all of these help depending on the type of playstyle/ character you use.

Here are the only advantages for both sides. Sticks are universal, whereas pads have the hotkeys you mentioned. It's all a matter of preferences like you said

  • @ruekaen You are right I didn't think of that possibility.

  • keep up the good work

  • Awwwwww man. :/ Me and a YouTuber called AkatsukiDante played online a few times. I was Nemesis and he was Vergil. I used Nemesis's Level 3 Hyper and when it was done, I used the rocket finisher. XD; I should start recording these moments..

  • Xbox control stick :)

  • There were some points I was better on controller... and best on the stick... I Find Wolvy, Akuma and Wesker easy on the 360 pad(combos anyway)... but then Dante, Phoenix Wirght and Dr. Doom are waaaay easier and more fun to use on the stick... and I've only switched last month and I already got the hang of it....

  • Oh and I seriously doubt that Dante combo was long... It wasn't all that impressive, but I must agree that it never gets old.

  • Just for clarification: almost everyone's snapbacks have insane startups; playing Single Player at Very Hard excessively would seriously imbibe this in your mind. My best example of this which still works right now is that if a Ryu does a random Shinkuu Hadouken, Felicia can actually do a snapback and she'll hit Ryu before the beam even comes out. It's insane. Remember Seth Killian's statement on undiscovered snapback technology? Yeha, people forget that it's one of the quickest moves in the gam

  • I liked the Doom level 3 finish you pulled. Wins are always cooler when won with a special attack

  • i started playing on pad and got good with it but when i switched to arcade stick, i picked up the game pretty much instantly, maybe it was because i always knew the layout of the buttons on the stick, im still better on pad but i play on stick more cause its just more fun

  • PS3 d-pad all the way

  • PS3 d-pad all the way

  • I use a controller but I did simple configuration to make it similar to a fight stick so I can do more professional combos. By changing my L trigger to the L attack I can the professional more advance zero combos. As far as fighting goes i do amazing with a controller and just is within my preference.

  • hey guys! i'm the Dante player in 9:06, i've been playing in default ps3 controller, since i was 8, but the moment i wanted to step up my game, i bought my SSIV madcatz tournament edition fightstick, and i'm telling you, transitioning from a default pad to a fightstick is really challenging, its like learning how to play Fighting games again. but transitioning to an arcade stick is really helpful.it took me 5 months just to master it. it really helps you do unique combos with dante's bold cancel

  • I don't have a capture device whatsoever, but I'd like anyone to try this for me: Happy Birthday an assist with Nemesis's Air Rocket Launcher and you can repeat doing so indefinitely. The only drawback is that the point character is free to do anything.

  • I use a basic 360 pad. I'm not not used to the motions, but I can do plenty with Ammy and Skrull.

  • im going to switch to an arcade stick because i feel like the analog stick on a controller isn't as responsive as i'd like it to be

  • Max can you use Trish? I will love to see some gameplay of her.

  • i perfer a controler cuz i dont like the movement of a fighitng stick n my hands are that big so i cant mash all the buttons lol

  • so max would you say it is easier to use and arcade stick for some of the imputs over the controller for example the shoruken motion

  • 5:50

You can do 1 button dashing in UMVC3 with a controller :)

  • tht viewful joe is still amaing yo :D one of my favs in mvc 3

  • same with me, grew up in an arcade, xbox 360 controller is atrocious, can't wait to get my arcade stick for x mas :)

  • Comment removed

  • Yay, Amaterasu! Don't forget to finish with Golden Fury for extra Demon Fangs!

  • Lol too late Max, a week ago I ordered a stick for Christmas.

  • I use a "fight pad" because i grew up playing killer instinct and mortal kombat with snes, so im really used to pads and not sticks

  • This helped me a lot. I was seriously thinking on switchin to an arcade stick. Fuck it, I'll stay with the controller, I'm good with it and I don't need an arcade stick to play better

  • I'm actually worse on an arcade stick compared to controller. My directional inputs are just slower and less consistent compared to a pad. I do however love tapping buttons with individual fingers rather than my right thumb. I wish there was a controller that was left half pad, right half arcade stick buttons...if that's even possible.

  • @sk00ter No problem dude, just do what I do with a controller, and position your hand so that your index finger is on X(or square), and middle finger is on Y(or triangle). Works great for fighting games.

  • @ElMassacrista Yeah, I do that for certain situations, like using Phoenix right to get that middle evidence piece. Other than tho, I need my other fingers for assist (shoulder buttons) and that's a lot of position switching

  • @sk00ter Yeah that was a problem for me too, until I changed the assist buttons into the left side of the controller (L1, L2) or (LB, LT). :D

  • @ElMassacrista Hmm, I hadn't even thought of that. Good call man I'll definitely give it a shot.

  • @sk00ter Search up fight pad, I got one. I'm getting a stick though, since I was good on a fight pad.

  • @DirectorPainter I know about fight pads, they're like sega saturn controllers. I'm talking about I would love some frankenstein of a controller that has a pad and arcade size buttons. But I guess a fight pad wouldn't be a bad choice.

  • the only difference between controllers i find for this game is for characters who use 1 button charges like zero. i can't charge and continue while holding down the button like arcade sticks can.

  • Hey Max, We did a FT5 online the other night, and you never responded to my messages afterwards... :(

GT was RaccoonRecon -- Ran the Viscant team.

  • 8:55 for Johnny Ca... "ahem", Viewtiful Joe and the epic Nut Punch

  • Echo-hugen!

  • Im going to start out by using a stick, im getting a hori vx stick and umvc3 for Christmas, i know its going to be hard but fun at the same time!

  • actualy missed this because of the new youtube layout... >_>

  • @saikaboy you're not the only one...

  • Punch you in the nuts!
