i dig these versions on this album better than original way more power, nibbs is such an underrated bassist i don't know why people dis on him. @summermiaful thats thrash and death metal, classic heavy metal simply added more distortion and a heavier theme to the genre. This is evident in Black Sabbath's Paranoid. Bands like Iron Maiden sing clear vocals and just utilize the guitar and the theme of the music to go into the "Heavy" or traditional metal category

Of all the NWOBHM bands that I listened to growing up, I'm afraid I never got the Saxon thing. Not that I think they're a rotten group, it's just that I never saw the big deal. There's even been some debate over the years whether or not they (like Def Leppard) should even be considered a heavy metal band.

@jannyrcobs i'd say they are heavy metal. i personally think that they definitely are now (protect yourselves, i've got to rock to stay alive, come rock of ages). in the beginning they may have been closer to hard rock but its their metal spirit i think that has made them a heavy metal icon of the ages and that has morphed them into a true metal band. Def Leppard is more debatable though, I personally would say they started as heavy metal and then moved to rock. either way good music.

I think Leppard started out as a British glitter/glam band, much in the tradition of Sweet, Slade, Bowie, Bolan, etc, but around the turn of the decade, one had to play punk, metal or new wave. I think they were more or less forced to go the metal route on their first album or two because of pressure from the record company. The same is true of Motley Crue and Ratt a couple of years later.
