Another thing that could happen with your furnace, if a part problem goes unnoticed for too long, is a thing called "flame rollout", meaning you furnace shoots a jet of flame out.Its a one in a trillion chance, though, with a furnace like that.
smart idea to get a brand new alarm co alarms should be replaced every 5 years smoke detectors should be replaced every 10 years. (smoke detectors save lives!!!!)
got an ear-piercing CO alarm as well; sometimes even a natural-gas-fired heating will give off CO in case of a fault. The instructions for the alarm clearly say, if it goes off, call the fire department first, then move to fresh air, and ask questions later.
Furnaces in a closet in the middle of the house are pretty common in my area (So. Cal) but it's rare to actually have them on the second floor. I guess it's the way our builder (UDC Homes, now Shea) designed it in the late 80's. Pretty much all the houses in my neighborhood by that builder have the furnace closet on the second floor.
are you sick?

Dang, that's an antique-ish furnace.
It plays a code 3 pattern, just like fire alarms do.
