I'll throw my hat in the ring then too! I use to work for Sea World Tx back in 1996 in Education department, yes I did a 6 week class on sea animals and stood with a microphone telling people about the Atlantic Bottle-nosed Dolphin and then some times telling ppl to say back from the glass at Shamus tank (lol) For one, all of these Orcas are born in captivity, they have never known to be "free", secondly its such a small percentage that is in cap, and are used to study them to help Orcas...cntd
...(cntd) that are in the wild. They preform and open parks to earn money to do studies to benefit and raise awareness to the public. You would not believe how many ppl Ive talked to at SW that think Orcas are fish! They leave knowing a bit more about ocean life. Sea World also has a Rescue team that helps, cares and DOES release back into the wild other animals. Ive seen it, in the back tanks only employees can get to, dolphins that are chewed up by boat motors...cntd..
cntd..Pacific White-sided Dolphins that have rare fungal dieases, tons of manatees, also they take in such animals(exotics) from everyday ppl such as parrots that outlive their owners, they also rescue illegally owned exotic pets that are abused by their owners. You can think what you want about SW, all I know is what Ive seen, sorry for the rant, I barely ever do this! :) peace
They dont' even understand the anatomy and appearence of the animals they "love and care" about so much... that isnt what the underbellies look like. and not to mention this commercial portrays two adult male orcas with dorsals straight and free. Any adult male orca in captivity is eventually affected by gravity, their fins flop down from being at the surface so much in captivity.
So what? I am sure those trianers and people who work there love their animals. They play with them, rub their bellies, pecs and tongue, and even more important: Give them other orcas to play with. I also noticed the mistake with the belly, but well, everyone makes mistakes. Secondly, also in the wild male's dorsal fins flop over, enough evidence for that. It isn't only the gravity, but also some stuff in their food that makes the fin stand straight.
@Taikkah ok this is a bit late but.. plenty of orcas in the wild have bent dorsal fins too.. it has nothing to do with being in captivity it just depends how much time the whale spends in deeper waters as opposed to the surface.. a whale who spends more time at the surface fin is more likely to flop.. and also could you make a perfectly animated orca that looks exactly like the real thing? if you can id like to see it..
@shamuroxy I am absolutley aware of that, but ALL male orcas in captivity have a bent or flopped over dorsal. There are no real orcas that look like the ones in this commercial. And Ill try if i have time. :)
@Taikkah its because they spend more time at the surface cuz obviously they cant go deep all the time.. which some may consider as something theyr being deprived of but u cant really have 200 feet deep pools.. and nakais dorsal fin isnt bent
@shamuroxy I KNOW THAT!!! Im stating that in the COMMERCIAL they portray 2 adult male orcas with beautiful tall dorsal fins, like in the wild. But there are NO, repeat, NO, orcas like that in captivity, reguardless of how it happens, its true. They are misrepresenting their animals in the commercial.
@Taikkah I don't think that the people that see these commercials and go to SeaWorld really care as much about whether or not the dorsal fin is correct. They go for the connection, the adventure, and the raw beauty that these animals have. They go to witness the connection that humans can have to our environment.
@shamurocks1395 It doesn't matter, as I said SW misrepresents their animals. And I barely call an aquarium "our environment" or "raw beauty". Raw beauty is witnessing animals HAPPY in their NATURAL environment hunting their own food, playing by their own rules, and not performing for our own entertainment. There is absolutley nothing natural about Seaworld.
I disagree with the marketing of this show. This commercial makes it look like the orcas can leave the tank - somehow 'go home' after the show. It makes them look less captive, less confined... that's probably what Sea World was going for of course. But it's not truthful. I also do not like seeing this advertisement on Animal Planet, a channel that supposedly cares about the welfare and treatment of all species...
Peepchick, I think your taking this commercial too literary. This commercial isn't about making it look like the Orcas can leave their tank for awhile and then come back. In my opinion, it really just symbolizes the imagination. Or, its just promoting the show, or both. I know your really, really anti-cap but, when it comes to this commercial, your taking your beliefs too far. I mean, you think, this commerial makes it look likes the Orcas can leave their tank! Come on.

Captive orcas are a sad caricature, a weary and spiritless version of
their wild counterparts. Visitors cannot help but leave with a distorted perception of
orcas and their environment. Most disturbingly, they may leave with the notion that it is
acceptable to confine orcas and other animals, solely to meet human demands for
entertainment and 'education' "Dying to Entertain You" Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society.
