Some of them are completely blind and others are legally blind but can still make out basic shapes. So they all wear blindfolds to even it out.

Keviggly, they were the blind folds because they are blind or legally blind (in which they can see blurry shapes) the blindfold insures that those who have legal blindness and not complete blindness don't have an advantage over those who are completely blind.
