Apparently that's too subtle a point to make to some Americans who celebrate carrying loaded weapons to presidential events while carrying signs that say they want to bury Obama while also portraying him as a caricature of a witch doctor. Some people ARE racists--even racists know that,...they just don't care. And there's a lot of not caring going on
Unprecedented attack? Oh give me a break! Signs and yelling?
I think Bush got a good dose when he was in office. A quick search of the internet and I found plenty of mean hateful signs, bumper stickers and t-shirts against Bush (and Cheney too). Why is it Carter that you see race as your defacto reason vs political and idealogical differences?
Folks don't need to have race as a reason to trash a President. They do it for attention and so don't give it to them!
If you don't support gross government spending and expansion, fetus killing, the freeing of terrorists, flawed foreign polices and hand-outs to people who contribute nothing to society...you're racist!
This will backfire on the Democrats when it comes time to win over the moderates. Conservatives know what they believe and to decry racism because because of political beliefs, is a foolish thing. Carter is a moron. Isn't Robert Byrd a leading Democrat and former member of the KKK?
Brave Carter calls spade a spade, exposing the hidden racist source of the vitriol and extremism polluting political discourse. The dolts complain about the threat of government invasion of personal freedom; however, by carrying fire arms to volatile political rallies including presidential ones, they create the very conditions that could give an excuse for the government to be more restrictive. They call for protection of life but murder doctors and adore the death penalty, I weep for humanity!
He's been bat shit crazy for years, even Obama says he wrong. Carter is nuts and has been for quite some time, you might want to start paying attention anytime now.
I'll go on a limb here and say that while some of it is most probably racist (the birthers strike me as likely candidates) I think other people are legitimately afraid - of what and why they don't probably know but they're jut afraid. Some of it is the innate fear of change most people seem to have and some of it has been drummed up by elements in the media.
Because fear is irrational so will their reactions be. Until fear is no longer a factor you're going to continue seeing this insanity.
Go Carter. I'm glad somebody is calling it out for what it is. and conservatives: I'm not agreeing with him because I want to demonize you for not supporting health care. you have concerns and so do i. but we can leave signs like what he described, and people motivated by them, at home.
I'm Black, and I disagreed with Bush, but never once thought about race in one of my opposing views. And I'm sure other conservatives are the same way, however there are a lot of conservatives parading and patronizing more because of Obama's skin color. Hell, I don't think I ever seen anything like this during the Clinton administration.
You never thought about race concerning Bush probably because every US president has been white male, so being white male didn't distinguish Bush in any particular way.
When Obama was elected, many conservatives were angry at just how many people liked him and the fact that he made history by becoming the first black president.
There are many people who aren't even conscious of their racist feelings.
''You never thought about race concerning Bush probably because every US president has been white male, so being white male didn't distinguish Bush in any particular way.''
That doesn't mean I couldn't went all Kanye and said, ''Bush doesn't care about Black people'', or ''A Black President could've done better''. I tackled what I disagreed with, without using race like these conservative idiots.
I'm not supporting Kanye's accusation, but he wasn't accusing Bush of being good or bad at what he does because he's white. He was accusing Bush of how he handled Katrina because the people of New Orleans are mostly black.
Well, good for you for not resorting to race, and Kanye's comment was definitely inappropriate on TV, but was it inaccurate? Well, there's no way to prove it, so it was something of a baseless accusation.
But when Glenn Beck accuses Obama of having a "deep-seated hatred of white people and white culture," where is he coming up with that accusation? Is that not racist itself?
It really depends on whether or not accusations made and problems addressed have anything to support them.
So true. Working the phones and door knocking up to the polls during the election I met people who were coming to grips with their racist feelings. Many are still struggling.
President Carter is completely correct. I disagree with his position on Israel and Palestine, but I wholeheartedly agree with this stand he is making now with respect to President Obama.
I think that Israel is within its rights to defend itself and its citizens from terrorist attacks from Palestinian militant groups. I do think that it would be great if Israel and Palestine would be able to live in peace side-by-side, but with the anti-Semitism in the Palestinian media and education systems, it would be impossible to eradicate the militant Islamist ideology from the region. A fundamental change in the Palestinian way of life would be necessary before this would happen.
I think you're putting far too much blame on one side.
A Palestinian militant group kills some civilians = a horrible act of violence.
Israeli military kills Palestinian civilians = well they were just defending themselves.
A mutual respect is what is needed right now. I think it's impossible to put so much blame on Palestinians when Israel is obviously the occupying force, and holds most of the power. Palestinians are basically in constant house arrest inside of their own country.
I agree with Carter that those attacks are beyond the bounds, and have no place in any debate. BUT the reason these folks don't want Obama isn't b/c he's black, but b/c he's a liberal. Big difference there.
Indeed... the right despised Clinton, Carter et. al. as much as they despise Obama. Only substantive difference is Obama is even further left than at least Clinton (making the contempt more), and he has more power (making the urgency higher).
I'm glad Carter has come forward to express his concerns. He has nothing to lose by simply telling the truth. He's already served the highest office and owes nobody any favors. He just calls it like he sees it. I respect Carter for coming forward and making his beliefs clear, because like it or not, as a former President his perspective on a variety of issues is still a significant value to this country and to the world.
For Serious; it's surprising that no one has told these protesters to tone it down a notch. Undoubtedly there is racism toward Obama in the radical right wing fringe, but who cares? As far as I can tell, sadly, the extreme right wing has the greatest potential to break the republican party apart and help put to an end this two party apartheid we have going on. Also, it will expose all the really ignorant people which just might motivate the intelligensia to actually do something!
The pastor at my chucrh (southern baptist if you were wondering) is a close friend of Jimmy Carter and has gone hunting with him, needless to say that the secret service people who always guard him had a fun day
carter is right about the racism but remember gwb was refered to has a monkey and i seem to recall people also comparing him to hitler. now in my opinion these comparisons were fair because bush trampled on the constitution and peoples rights like hitler would have but does it make it right to do so? many of these people that are against obama are doing so more because of race and politics. everyone is entitled to an opinion in this country whether we agree with that opinion or not....
"carter is right about the racism but remember gwb was refered to has a monkey and i seem to recall people also comparing him to hitler."
Obama is being called a monkey by racists because he's black. Bush was called a monkey because he's not very bright. And Bush was compared to Hitler because he unilaterally invaded Iraq on flimsy grounds and his war has left north of a million people dead. Obama would never go that route unless the U.S. were attacked.
"Obama would never go that route unless the US were attacked," Oh how I wish that were true, dear progressive friend. Unfortunately, there is already a pretty clear build up going on in Pakistan and of course Afghanistan; it's just about as clear as day that the US will be all up in Pakistan real quick like. In fact, the largest US military base ever is currently under construction in Pakistan. Obama will not end any wars; they're too profitable! Obama is just another Republicrat.
Sadly, my progressive friend, Pakistan is a clusterfuck we cannot give up on. This is a country with nuclear weapons and a sizeable radical Islamist element, just like the Taliban next door. If we walk out of there these Islamo-Fascists will topple the govt. and start the ultimate Holy War, i.e. WW3, without blinking an eye. That's reality, unfortunately. As long as that country is in danger of being taken over by these religious loonbots, the West cannot walk away from that part of the world.
perhaps he did, and I just didn't hear about it -- but it Carter speak up and make speeches when people referred Bush to Hitler? Was it racist then, or is that something completely different?

Where were you when Bush Jr was getting it even worst than Reagan and by far much worse than Obama?
I agree, this sort of vitriol must stop but playing the partisan game only stokes the flames.
