Raw Video: Dog Leads Police to Fire

How could you not see that raging fire through those barren winter trees? The officer was responding to the fire to begin with then saw the fire, then saw the dog who got scared and ran back home. I don't want to sound pessimistic, but that's most likely the reality. Either way, they did find the fire yes and the dog ran home to make sure everything was ok! Cool!!!

According to the MSNBC story and the official report, after leading the cops to the fire, the dog went back to that main road and led in the fire trucks the same way - so, I don't think it was a fluke.

That's pretty amazing considering they live in Alaska. I watched the show that was on and they seem like good people. . They said the dog is pretty skittish but he knew to what to do when it mattered. I have a German Shepard and the that guy is smart. I take him for walks to my bank which is 3 miles away and he listens to me on the way down there. On the way back it is a different story because he knows we are on our way back home so he deliberately misbehaves so he can go for a walk longer.

Actually the Troopers' GPS froze and he had no idea where the emergency was. He was at a fork in the road when this German Ghepard appeared so the Trooper follwed him. The dog then went back out to the same road and lead the fire Dept. to the fire. This was in a very rural area.

Just a theory. The dog got freaked out by the fire and ran away from it. While chilling out on the road on a safe distance, he gets ambushed and chased by some car. So then he runs back home, since that's where he thinks he is safe.

I have always loved this video, it shows how intelligent dogs are. I just watched an episode of Alaska State Troopers and one of the segments in it was about this incident. The trooper said that after leading the him to the fire, the dog went back to that spot and a firetruck responding was lost and the driver saw the dog, and the dog lead the firefighters to the house well.

Border collies (sheppards are close) have an intelligence level similar to a 2 yr old child. That is pretty smart! Some birds, are closer to a 3 yr old child. They are really amazing. Dogs are incredible friends. We are so lucky.

@kittybookitty My GSD will go and get our two (small) dogs if I ask him "Where's Millie' or 'Where's Scooby," or take something I give him to my wife if I say "Take to Ceci." Though he has had formal Schutzhund training, he (like most GSDs) will often display his most intelligent behavior doing ordinary tasks instinctively without being trained. I think a lot of it is just the very high natural GSD intelligence and love for his human pack.

German Shepherds are great dogs...I was raised with them and I have 2 now...yes they are big dogs and they shed alot...but they are smart dogs...I have to keep the doors locked because one of my german shepheard knows how to open the doors...she taught herself by watching me.

Four times this past summer, she's alerted me to the tornado sirens that went off late at night while I was sleeping. She hasn't figured out how to open the doors yet but she does ring the door bell when she wants to come inside. They are great dogs! Peace~~

Just goes to show the natural intelligence of the GSD breed. Also, their "protective" instinct goes way beyond just biting in defense of self or family. Buddy is a true hero and an excellent representative of the breed! Also, props to the trooper for being open minded and forward-thinking enough to recognize that Buddy was out there to "lead him in."
