@SymonDymond Carmack likes to program, and he likes to make awesome programs. Beyond that, why should he care about whether his program will run on a PC or a console? Maybe he likes console programming better. Either way, this guy is a god.
@TheBlackDeath3 Pretty unfair to those developers that we removed from id following the RAGE debacle and that the guy responsible walks away like he is teflon coated. Maybe a great programmer, but he must have had some good business people advising him in the past. He is a good example of why good techies need to be balanced with good equally good business people. He lost his way and invested to hard in a platform at the end of its life. EA chose a different route and it worked
I didn't quite follow what he said at the end about the green cars being a scam... he brought up the cost of the car at 100k... and said how each mile amounts to 2 cents... and then said something about it being a scam? how is the cost of driving and cost of purchase related to carbon emissions and environmental safety in any way at all? normally John's reasoning is very easy to follow but he didn't make sense at that point to me... can somebody explain prz? :)
@leet512 Maybe he's refering to the fact that Electric cars don't really cost less money on the long run? Or the fact that electric cars are only as envior-friendly as the generation method of the power it uses(coal, more often than not). I'm not sure either.
@shedendpussys What he's saying is you do more ecological damage manufacturing new green products (even if really green, not just branded "green") than you'll recoup in use over their lifetime as compared to a typical product. That this is ignored by "green" companies which are no better than other companies just trying to profit is where it is a scam.
I don't think there's anyone on planet Earth I admire more than John Carmack. He is the engineering equivalent of Albert Einstein and proof that it doesn't take a college degree to be a genius. It makes me feel like a complete loser when I think about the fact that we both started learning to program at Radio Shack, programming BASIC on a TRS-80. He invented modern 3-d gaming and now he builds his own rockets that will probably take him to space and I'm watching Star Trek reruns. Sigh.
Must be kidding me ! This guy is a programming genious, and took on creating a space rocket which he found "easy". And now he challenges mechanical cars ? Holy shit. It seems he just understands everything.
Nuclear power. lol I've thought about that and the thought struck me, "what happens when some housewife on her cellphone crashes one"? and the corresponding answer... "well that small area will be uninhabitable for a halflife of 100+ years". Just a mini-Chernobyl. No worries...
@NinjaRunningWild , pretty sure he doesnt mean direct nuclear power like a submarine or a battleship, but as in nuclear powerplants create electricity, and that electricity is being used to recharge the car.
@Offspringfan64 Amazing how people feel a year later after this. If I knew where he was, I would be strapping jet engines to his fkcing tesla and lighting the fuse. One serious backstabbing sob.
@SymonDymond No hard feelings man , follow the money, ID is a company, Carmacvk is a business man as well as an engineer. Quake Live flopped, drivers for RAGE were fucked up and that pissed people off, piracy is rampant. ID would die as a PC primary developer. In the end, ID needs to get paid too, and when PC people don't buy ID games while console people do...well...I can't judge them.
@Offspringfan64 Sadly your right. Damn pirates are screwing it up for all of us. I dont buy it that this is the only reason though.. I one read an industry magazine talking about the difference in demographic. They talked a lot of about the casual gamer. This was defined as a console owner who buys a game friday and wants it finished by monday. I dont know any like that but there you go. I dont agree that PC folks dont buy games though. There is an MMO in Asia that has 90M subscribers.
This is what I like about Carmack. No matter what subject he gets into he always have a lot of interesting things to say. You just gotta read between the lines.
why the hell is he talking about car rpms (fail?); hdd rpms is better xD computer annihilates any car imho

@gtg489p Climategate ¬_¬ Yeah, those tree rings of a local area weren't matching projected global data so it must all be a hoax.
