  • If only I was born 5 years before this so I could play it right when it came out.

  • But R-Type Leo is the best!

  • 5:12 Yeah..Mark knows what he's talking about.

  • Take THAT, Star Wars! lol

  • got this at lukie games for 3.18 cents and honestly what a great price

  • my first spaceship shooter and one of the few i ever really played

  • My FAVORITE space shooter for the SNES. Nothing came close to the enjoyment I got from it.

  • god... that first stage music

  • what you know 'bout Gran Turismo?

  • Mark, please make review of r-type delta released only for the psx. that game costs you a little bit more than a tacco but that is it worth. thats the best r-type of all. much better than r-type final for the ps2.

  • i jave a game like this for snes called Earth Defense Force and its one of the most hardest games ive ever played.

  • ace game..slow down is a bitch tho..i used to have r type 3 too..review that one man.it has some groovey mode seven bits and the graphics are sweet

  • Pissing me off for 2 decades... I barely get passed level 3 easy mode

  • reminds me of life force for nes.

  • I own this game and back in the day I didn't think this one was all that great, I wished I bought R-Type III instead.

  • gotta love this game and awesome soundtrack, the soundtrack made me want to finish this game so damn hard because i really loved these songs :D

  • this game is bad ass

  • man..do these games bring back memories

  • I Still Recon R-Type leo is the best R-type game Yet XD

  • slows down becouse they didn't use the snes PPU's Properly

  • @WazzaAussiePictures Wow, you know your shit.

  • i remember that game on ZX-Spectrum.

    its awesome

  • Do you play on getting R-Type III: The Third Lightning and reviewing that? The difficulty is pretty extreme, but it's fun.

  • man i have this game on my PAL snes right here.

i loved it and i still love it.

its really challenging and real fun.

you realy should download a rom of this atleast - if you dont have a snes.

i found my copy for a euro somewhere - but its worth ten.

  • i got the super famicon version of this game, to bad i have a pal console

  • 4:44 = The Sperminator :D

  • how the hell u get so many subs

  • i got this as one of my first snes games, but i agree this game was freaking difficult - i thikn i did beat it thanks to Nintendo Power or somethin (with a level cheat lol, and on easy!) and eventually beat it on easy without cheats, but I could never bring myself to try the other difficulty levels since it meant a lot of one shot monsters took like 2-3 shots to take down :/

  • OMG,I still can't beat that game!

  • Game is pretty damn hard but really fun but Im a Gradius man myself

  • 2:56

I still cannot beat that monster xDDDDD

  • i had that game it was hard i used to love this game but i didnt remember the name but you made me find it!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • hardest of the R-Type series. easiest is Final

  • The music was so bad-ass!

  • man, i remember completing this game, it was so awesome

  • Although I love the R Type series, I didn't like this one because it was just R Type 2 with a different title.

  • God, this game moves so slow on the crappy snes cpu. The Genesis is so much better for shooters.

  • @Wampaa I thought the cpu was faster on the SNES?

  • @SoApBoX No, Genesis CPU was faster (LOL @ "Blast Processing). But SNES had Mode 7 3D hardware.

  • Good game but Thunder Force 5 is better imo

  • This game is hot i remember playing is years ago i just bought a super nintendo again and I just finish getting this game.

  • Joguei este jogo muuuuuuuuito

  • @Durrennatt eu joguei do Master System... Era muito pobre pra ter SNES na época... Hj meu PC tem todos os emuladores possíveis ehehehe

  • memooorrrriieeeesssssss i totaly ruled at this game awesome to see ill suck at it these days havent played this forrr a long time fps now level upppp!!! lol

  • This game is Fucking fantastic. The soundtrack is probably the best of all the games of the genre back then. I actually can't describe the love I have for this game in words. If you have not played this game, do yourself a favor and by all means try it, you won't regret it. It is that good.

  • i rember i had this for the gbc it was a orange cartrage

  • i remember as a kid i thought it was IMPOSSIBLE to beat but me and a buddy after high school a few years back was just playin it not thinkin we could actually beat it but WE DID. Im really good at video games and he's just ok at best, but we actually beat it one time and he actually helped alot and it was one of the best (video game) feelings I ever had, prolly right behind beating the ninja turtles game for the 1st time for the NES.

  • I thought the framerate issues happened only on the emulator

  • youtube fucks you on bandwith i play youtubes all day long no problem but when i try to view one of your videos it lags and freezes its bullshit and irritating

  • Ah ma I played all the RTypes but missed this one. I'll have to get an emulator.. LOL at the purple spermies shooting at you.

  • Jesus Christ. Easy mode looks like bullshit. I've been trying to beat Normal for ages and the enemies take a lot more punishment.

  • This game made me nuts when I was in grade school. I'm just recently giving it another shot (a dozen years later) and getting destroyed just as badly all over again. The lack of checkpoints is punishing, but it does force you to get better at perfecting the game's brutal stages.

  • This game was soooooo hard!

  • One of my all-time fave games.

  • maaann i used to have this game, but my mom made me give it to my cousin a long time ago along with my super nintendo and all my games i had for it...

  • For once I bought the game then watched the Game Room after playing it.

I got mine for about $4.

Its frustrating because you have to start way back at the begging of the stage even if the end boss you've been fighting for 20 minutes is on its last breath and the tip of your ship nips the edge of a projectile or wall material can obviously be frustrating, its still a load of fun.

Really I wanted to find the Turbo Grafx 16 or SEGA Master System version though.

  • Pretty much all of the bosses can be beat with one hit

  • The voice over sounds like Ben Stein.

  • a lot of the bullets look like seamen...

  • 79 cent tacos at Taco Bell rock!

  • SNES = pimpomatic style. Love it.

  • Not a bad shooter but pales in comparison to Lightening Force for the Sega Genesis. That's where the REAL pie filling is, sweetheart!

  • the thunder force games on the genesis are awsome but r type 3 on the snes is as good as the best genesis shooters.

  • Awesome game. Love the music. :D

  • More than likely, it has the elements from R-Type 2 instead of the original.

  • who else thinks r type 3 is better?.

  • I have never really been a fan of 2d SHMUPS, but two that really stick out in my mind as being particularily awesome are Ikaruga and Gradius.

  • Oh, and alos, there was some game I had for NES when I was a kid where you could turn into a flying robot and a jet, and some weird in-between stage. It was probably a Robotech game. Unfortunately, I have never gotten the chance to watch Robotech. I heard it's pretty cool. But anyways, that game was pretty damn sweet too.

  • that game is super hard

  • This in opinion is the single most challenging and most enjoyable side scrolling shoot em up. They made many squeals and apart from the PS2 version I loved every version of them. R-Type Delta was awesome and actually was just as great as the original. I hope they eventually bring out a decent re-make of R-type and if they haven't already port the original to virtual console.

    R-Type > FFVII j/k XD R-Type forever :P

  • it looks like it copied Gradius III completely

  • Uhh no. R-Type is a classic side scrolling shumup.

  • dope

  • When I was a kid, I traded this game to a kid in exchange for Street Fighter II. Since my youth, my love for fighting games has totally faded, while my appreciation for 2D space shooters has increased dramatically.

  • @Talloweed I'm the opposite, I loved several space shooters during my early teen years(14-16) but recently (age 17-20) I have began getting into fighters really big.

  • @Talloweed Lol, I'm actually really young but I still had an NES fresh out of teh box, got both my NES and SNES at the same time in 92, I nevery really appreciated them untill I was like 11 or so but by then I had already gone through the N64 and PSX and was about to get a ps2.

After that I bought myself a Dreamcast and Genesis, and have been collecting old games ever since.

  • Dude.. Shut up! seriously...

  • Don't diss this game because you suck at it!!!

  • You're an idiot.

  • god i love side scroll cartridge mayhem!!

  • is this game on the xbox 360 arcade games ???

  • A regular taco from Taco Bell, hard and/or soft, will cost $1.05 depending on your states sales tax. lmao

Funny, cause I was eating Taco Bell tacos while eating this.

  • Super R-type 3 was so awesome. It was also for SNES. I think it was better than this game in every way. Can you do a review of it?

  • R-type 3 really rules, it's the better side scroll shoter i've ever seen. no one compares it.

  • hes getting less SEGA fanboy the more he plays the SNES

  • I bet this game cost $50 when it came out,Because you said it was awsome..And yes,I love R.TYPE games.=D

  • Hey umm, could you do a review of R-type Final for the PS2?

  • Good to see you reviewing some SNES games. Great review!

  • Why are all shootem ups so more faster on the Gensis than the SNES? I mean just compare this with the thunder force games.

  • cuz its go blast processing?

  • You should play Crash and Burn for the 3DO

  • If you want Grand Turismo R Type get Vigilante 8 for the N64.

  • He needs to get Phalanx. That game is an underrated shooter, and it's interesting because the artbox has an old guy playing a banjo.

  • Good review of Super R-Type. I usually play this a lot on my SNES. True, this is hard, but if you want a fast-paced shooter game, check out games like Space Megaforce or Biometal for the SNES!

  • Helloooo!? R-type dimensions 4 XBL arcade

  • never played r-type but looks cool

  • If you guys think THIS is hard, try the original R-Type on TurboGrafx-16. You will tear your hair out in frustration.

  • R-Type was also on Gameboy. I never did like how you had to be perfect in this game which is why I preferred Gradius.

  • I like the sfx and music. It looks laggy, but it still looks generally good to me.

  • Gran turismo combined with blowing stuff up = mario kart

  • Rock N' Roll Racing for the snes would be a better comparison. If you want to combine guns and cars (and not go karts).

You aren't really blowing up the karts either, you just make people dizzy and stuff.

  • True.i've played both and man are they fun but i'm biased towards mario kart.

  • Yeah Mario Kart is fun. The snes one was actually my favorite of all of them though I played one on the gba and it was good.

    Cya.

  • Yeah but the arcade and PS1 versions of R-Type II are much better.

  • This isn't a very good port of R-Type II. If you want to play the game in its full glory get the R-Types compilation for PS1 or download that on PS3.

  • It's actually a remix of R-Type and R-Rtype II with some original stuff thrown in.

  • Need to check out R-Type III

  • Ah hahaha I love this game, it used to make me want to go and hang myself when I was a kiddo xD still awesome! thanx for reviewing it ^^

  • This game looks like it's lagging 90% of the time. The graphics and sound also don't seem impressive, just average.

I do think the SNES is a good system, but this game doesn't really speak well for it. The slow processor is a problem for games like this. It's better for RPGs where the graphics and sound are more important (and better utilized).

  • This was they first Super Nintendo game i ever had, besides Super Mario world back in 1991. It's still pretty good.

  • Basically this is the Amigas R-type 2 but on the SNES

  • Which came out in arcades first.

  • I take it you're too young to have played these side-scrollers when they originally came out...

  • im mah fireing my lazaaaaa baaaaaaaaaaa.

  • ware do u FIND this stuff

but mabye i need a SNES first ware can i get 1 fast?

  • ebay is the answer for evry thing.

  • cool

  • Holy cow, that soundtrack is awesome!

    (for a snes game) :D

  • agreed (for a snes game).

  • great review I used to had this game back then.

  • If you are looking for the best shoot em ups on the SNES, you HAVE TO review R-Type 3 and especially Parodius! Both are probably the best games in the genre.

  • Dont forget Axelay!

  • And UN Squadron ;P

  • are you kidding ?. R-Type 3 and Parodius?.the best games in the genre of shooters?!.if you mean strictly for the snes, right?.

  • I live near a game exchange as well. You can finds some treasures at these stores and cheap !

  • r-type and gradius

    the longest running shmups

best one though is aero fighters!

  • he lives near a game exchange, i've been there, the games there are extremely cheaper than ebay

  • I have this game! it's epic!

  • plz review r-type Delta plzzz

    5/5

  • i have this game on my Palm Centro

  • looks like fun, i'll have to try that one

  • purple sperm at 4:49

  • Hey, if you like shmups, check out Phalanx on the SNES!

  • I wonder if they're gonna release R-Type Command (R-Type Tactics) on PSP in Australia?

  • Mario Kart has weapons and stuff.

  • great review ^_^

  • spy hunter would work lol

i guess it aint the same view as grand turismo though :P

hey peeps... dont mean to advertise er anything but if u got time it would be nice if you would check my reviews out... i havn't done to many yet and i'm still kinda getting better

if your cool with a bit of bad language check em out

    thanks ;)

and great review mark.. you seem pretty pro at shooters over all to me... i cant say i have played one shooter enough to be good but what i do play i die fast :(

  • Well Mark you could always just play Road Blasters. I think that is about as close as you will get lol. Maybe some Twisted Metal or something.

    Awesome video man. Great game.

  • Glad to see you got your hands on a Super Nintendo!!

You'll notice probably with other games that the graphics have more than just "more contrast" with the Sega Genesis. The Super Nintendo has waaaaay more colors. SNES has up to 32768 and Sega Genesis has up to a selection of 512.

  • Both SNES and Genesis features the same 15-bit color gamut of 32,768 variations - even the Game Boy Advance does the same. The advantage of the SNES is the amount of colors ON SCREEN - 512 variations while the Genesis is limited to 64 (I guess).

  • What you say is total BS. The Genesis has 3 bits per colour gun, which amounts to 512 total colours. The SNES has 5 bits per colour gun, which amounts to 32768 colours. Furthermore, both SNES and Genesis can actually display more colours than what you describe here. On both consoles, you can change the palette during screen rendering. Plus, the SNES has the transparency modes. If you really want it, you actually can display ALL availably colours on both systems in certain situations.

  • I think the difference in colors is what translates to the "smoother" vs "higher contrast" observation.

  • wasnt this also released as R Type 2 on some machines? R Type Leo was a great arcade game...was that released on any consoles etc?

  • Nope, it is a snes exclusive. Though it is sort of a remake in some parts it's still it's own game.

  • i love this one, specially the music and the sound effects, snes was the head at its time speaking about music and sound(well, speaking about all).

  • I like the shorter intro

  • you should buy full auto you have cars with guns on front on top and on back well you race. what more could you want. ; )

  • Um...what?

    I see no cars. .-.

    Unless I'm missing something...?

  • the frame rate could be better if they had the super FX 2 chip back in 1991...

  • Super FX chips have nothing to do with the slowdown. The reason why the game is the way it is it is because Super R-Type is on a 8 meg cartridge. If Irem would be a bit more patient and waited until 16 meg carts became the norm, then we would have had a decent port of R-Type II for SNES.

  • wow, I didn't know that. ^^

  • Size of the cart had nothing to do with flicker and slowdown.

  • True, but the port is actually good enough for what it is. and truthfully, if you check out my channel, it is one of my favorite games for the super nintendo.

  • cool game

  • a swissarmy knife powerup of mayhem lool

  • I'm so happy you've been reviewing Nintendo stuff lately. I really enjoy it.

  • Ah I have this game too, it's a blast!

  • haha at like 4:44 or 4:34 i forgot it shoots out like purple sperm

  • This is why I love SNES games, awesome music and lots of detail. I always loved the Game Over music in Super R-Type.

  • Isn't this a version of R-Type 2? I'm pretty sure it is.

  • The levels and bosses in Super R-Type look almost identical to the ones in R-Type 2.

  • That's becuase it's the same game just diffierent title nothing more.

  • Was it just R-Type 2 or 1 and 2?

  • Mostly it is r-type 2 from what i hear.

  • Gran Type, lol, that would rock.

  • witch is better?

  • I got the cartridge for this last year it is awesome.

  • I know you're listening...no you're not.
