Our federal government TEACHES TORTURE TECHNIQUES AT THE 'SCHOOL OF THE AMERICAS" IN FORT BENNING GEORGIA. Hundreds of their "graduates" from Latin America have returned to their countries and committed crimes against their own people, torture, murder, and rigged elections, as a standard program of our federal government, and it has been going on for many, many years. Do a search on Google for "School of the Americas".
I'm not a raving liberal, but Alberto Gonzales deserved every bit of the shellacking he got in this hearing. His tenure as Attorney General was indefensible.
you damn right the USA is all the worlds enemy. I don't mean the citizens I mean the secret government and this fn guy. NO to SPP security and prosperity partnership is an abomination. I am Canadian and I want nothing to do with the Britians minions that rule your government!

What a hypocrite this guy lecturing on torture all the senate and congress knew this was going on. CIA and military can get any information from anybody including war enemies simple by using the right drugs no pain is need for interrogation. This whole torture thing was the politicians way of showing the American people we can do anything we want to any one including you American citizens who like to speak out. Senate and Congress overall are evil, narcissistic, greedy hubris filled egotists.

Leahy is a piece of shit liar and a torturer himself. Read "Transformation of America" by Cathy O'Brien and prepared to be horrified by the likes of Leahy and many other top ranking officials in government.
What has he done about Valerie Plame? Has he seen to fully funding SSI, Medicare, Mediaide, Education? Words are very, very cheap & as a professional politican he runs his mouth. He's NEVER heard of Omnibus Budget Reconcilation Act of 1993 that made tax payer 1st payer for corporate earned benefits. Big shift of wealth before the mortgage scam. Has Gozelly been charged w/anything. NO, and NO. Useless. Blab, blab, blad. He voted to take our rights!

Leahy is full of shit. He thinks Hillary drop out and support Obama. Obama has trashed her and Bill for 9 months. She should leave the party before doing that. Not to mention Leahy seems to have not a clue about the blue/red/swing states reality. Scorecared in the 4 swing states Clinton 3 Obama 0 (plus Obama chickened out in 2 re-votes because he knows he would lose again, instead wanting to NOT count them. NOT COUNT FL!?!?! Some 'Uniter'). PA will make it a shutout...
Obama will win PA and be competitive in OH. He may not be as competitive in FL as HRC but he is in places where she is not including Colorado, Iowa, Virginia, and North Carolina. They both could win but their approach is different. HRC is going on the 1990s strategy of her husband (which failed in 2000 and 2004). Obama is going on Dean's Strategy and the 06 Midterms.
Cheers to Sen. Leahy. People in the empire who stand for truth and justice like him should have national holidays in their honour so that children have great examples.
I cannot think of anyone more forthright and fine tuned in their position than is Mr Leahy. Like he said, "America has always been a beacon of human rights", and look what this illegal Bush Adm. has done to this great country. Bush never even truly won the election. The REAL U.S.A. has been hijackrd by big corporations and those who "own" the Federal Reserve. True Patriots, please never give up!!!
what a cruel hoax! the human rights of US and citizens have been violated by every last democrat administration, and with forethought, albeit typically for practical reasons. the only difference is that republicans typically don't get sanctimonious with them about it, because they understand it isn't a perfect world, and hard choices have to be made.
I think both Bush and Clinton should be tried for violating the federal law implementing the Convention Against Torture. It's my understanding that Clinton rendered people to countries that use torture and we know Bush did (Syria, Eqypt, Jordan). That's a violation of the law andthey should be madeto answer for it.
And yes, Republican's don't get sanctimonious about it because unlike non-DLC Democrats, you dig torture. Yo think it demonstrates your tough minded attitudes on national security. The truth is it only demostrates the extent of your fear. You're willing to violate the mose basic human rights for the illusion of security. You're fucking cowards. Get some balls and stand up to Al Quaeda by showing them they cannot make us back down from our most basic values.
@ellwyn We are all subject to the law, Republican and Democrat alike; that is no excuse. Anyone who violates those laws IS subject to any disciplinary action that comes along with it. As a Democrat, I would willfully, even vehemently, seek prosecution against another Democrat for violating the law, as I would for any Republican. When you get to this point, it shouldn't be about politics, it should be about criminal violations of the law.
I agree "tubular bells" by michael oldfield (theme song to "the exorcist") was a bit dramatic for the footage, I am proud to have Senator Leahy as senator for my state, as it is apparent by this clip he is a steward for the civil rights of all people, not just Americans.
Why would they? Even if they did, it wouldn't make this admisnitration any less evil. At least we can all laugh at GW. Cheney is just not funny enough to be Pres.
Right, Senator Leahy tells anyone about "American values" is crap. His home state of Vermont is allowing child rapists off with NO JAIL time and he's lecturing me about "values". NEXT!!
wow. I think you just proved his point. Or rather, you proved that the image that the US now has overseas may be accurate, for your part at least. The only sort of moral outrage you know is sexual it seems. Pathetic. America is no longer the land of the free and you all know it. RON PAUL 2008!
I'm glad there are still people who can look past Reagan's neocon actions and see through to his libertarian words. It will be a sad day in America when people are judged on what they do, and not what they say.
apparently due process doesnt mean dipsquat anymore. so, no more court trials, no legal judgements, no evidence, no nothing - just send ppl to countries that love to torture - just because. hey, i'm reading about the roman emperors who basically did the same thing. we've been dragged back 2000 years in civil liberties. thanks a lot.
We've always been a beacon of human rights? Kerry said we are Gengis Kahns all the way up the chain of command to Pres Johnson and Nixon. Which lying democrat should I listen to.
Goddamit Gonzales Teddy is buying 2nd rounds of scotch at the restaurant and I have to be here with you 30 minutes past lunch hour. Goddam wetback!oops I mean I'll give you one week to 'fes up (hic) or you better get scamperin' back to Mechsico (hic)or Tescas or wherever yer from .Durn tootin!!!
P. Leahy is a very decent North American! Gonzales should be held in Guantanamo for 10 years, than be sent to Syria for "Questioning". Cheney, Bush, Rice, Wolwitz, Negroponte, and all those criminals should follow!
The american people need to wake up and wipe that smirk of the inquisitor general's face. These damned Nazis in power have destroyed everything we have fought and died for for over 200 years. They just fired 8 u.s. attorneys because they wouldn't selectively prosecute and run surveillance to blatantly serve the neocon political interests---those poor prosecutors were still naive enough to think fairness and justice are still american values.
I would like to see sen.Patrick to take a trip to the Arab nations. I would like to see if he is treated with the same values that he is preaching. How many journalist have been decaputated????HA HOW MANY...
That's his point Americans cannot send a Canadian or any citizen we detain to a country that does not have the same values of basic human rights and liberties that America used to stand for. he asks for due process of laws we hold dear and the Arab states don't.
Bush could pardon Gonzales and Ashcroft and others, but they could still be tried for war crimes by a U.N. tribunal. I strongly hope this happens. For him to sit there and even try and act as though sending a Canadian citizen to Syria instead on Canada says that they wanted to thwart the Geneva convention. While GW may want to say that the Geneva convention does not apply, that is not the view of the U.N. Send them there for trial.
America is not a signatory member of the International Crimial Court, the only global court that exists to uphold the geneva convention. The USA refuses to allow any of its solideirs or citizens to be tried there.
That is true but that could always change. It would be funny if after the 2008 elections and the repubs lose even more power and Bush pardons all his cronies if the new congress voted to join the international court and the new president signed the bill. Especially if the bill called for the arrest and transfer to the court for any people called to stand trial. i.e. Bush's pardons would not keep them from facing justice.
Poor Senator Leahy should wrap his head in duct tape before his skull explodes. Attorney General Guantanamo (oops! Gonzales) should have his mouth and eyes covered with duct tape. Sensory deprivation is too good for him.
Gonzolez is a lying snake. The case of that Canadian is and has been big news all over the CBC, but few here in America know of it. Personal liberty is indeed one of the founding principals of this country, and I'm glad to see at least some in congress are as mad as I am.
