Some early U.S. radar research was conducted by Alfred Loomis in rural areas not far from New York City, prior to U.S. entry into WWII. This research led to some amusing thoughts. In one of the experiments, conducted alongside a state highway, focusing the beams on passing auto traffic made Loomis remark "I wonder what the police could do with such an instrument". Virtually all the traffic was noted to be exceeding posted speed limits on that stretch of road.
