@timmybaby24 You are so right...gordon dominated and won his championships hands down. Johnson has won 4 in a row by getting a second chance. FUCK THE CHASE!
I think it maybe be much more, than 16, I have referred back to a points standings of the old format and after Phoenix Gordon was 56 back and he finished behind Johnson so at least 61 points out and Stewart was behind by 13 so I think Gordon would have 2nd but much further out than 16 points.,
No, my mistake though- it was actually just 6 points. *Points before Richmond: Gordon 3457, Johnson 3404. *Points earned at Richmond: Gordon 170 (3627 total), Johnson 130 (3504 total). *Points earned in final 10 races: Gordon 1463 (total 5090), Johnson 1622 (total 5156). *Subtract additional 10 points per win: Gordon (1 x 10) = 10, Johnson (7 x 10) = 70, for a total of 5080 points for Gordon to Johnson's 5086. On a side note, Tony Stewart would've finished 3rd and lost by 41 points.
Okay I think that makes sense now. Gordon would be 60 something probably 66 and the wins wasn't taken into account so only 6 points. If that was the case, Gordon would've tried everything to get past Johnson in the final laps.
I agree with BMB5150 that the competition in nascar today is stronger then it was years ago but to say that jeff gordon sucks is far from fact look back at his 2007 season had the old system still been in effect gordon would have won the championship that year not johnson however i am a fan off both johnson and gordon
the competition was good then too. gordon and evernham did a lot of cheating back then and it made gordon look like superman when in reality, he is an average driver
Well the competition is a lot stronger now, Gordon is getting older, but Gordon is still doing extremely well. Compared to 1998, well you can't you compare him now to 98 since he was unstoppable.
listen to the boo's
ahh i love it! :D
jeff gordon is the greatest!

he would have won this year under the old points system

Talking about this year (2009) for Gordon, I think Gordon would've been 3rd behind Johnson and Stewart.

@BMB5150 Nope. Gordon would have been second. Jimmie Johnson won the championship either way.

No, he would've lost to Jimmie Johnson by exactly 16 points under the system from '75-'03.

This was the end of Gordon's streak of 17 straight top 5 finishes in his stunning 1998 season.
