  • got mine for 50 (regular version plain edge) and its fucking perfect. I prefer it over my benchmades

  • I use the Native(non-CF) as an EDC blade. I service pools, so the blade is always wet. I'll admit that I neglect the blade and don't properly care for it, but the S30V is completely rust-free and still very sharp. The $60 I paid for my Native is way more reasonable than the CF version.

  • I wanna get the pink Native for my gf to carry. Not ffg, but still functional for her own POU.

  • New cars are using carbon fiber.

  • I'm so glad you called it like it is. The price of this knife is absurd. An outside vendor at Amazon.com has it going for $270. And yes, it is a nice knife, but NOT worth the price.

  • @shysterlicious yeah rather get a BM

  • Haha nutnfancy and his jimping.

  • @OuWill22 gimping......LMAO

  • can you try doin a video on knife blades and go over the different blade shapes, grinds, and steel quality and what all the different terms mean

  • this is for sure useful in a fight. Any blade is better than no blade. Though anything less than 2.5 inches is really pushing it. Even a small blade though can seriously harm someone, if you get them in the neck

  • ive got a native 3 partial serrated in VG10...awesome knife

  • Carbon fiber is really not that expensive of a material, (although much more expensive than both G-10 and especially Micarta), it is the cost of production that makes it higher, much like titanium. It is a beast to work with.

  • Lack of jimping on the back of the blade's spine is perfectly fine on this knife. As you pointed out, the handle has no traction at all. A knife with carbon fiber scales isn't a user. It's something you look at, admire, play with; and then put away.

  • If you don't like the spyderco serrations, the cold steel serrations are worse.

  • love this folder but i gonna switch it to a native who not have that saw blade, have use it for 3 years now and the saw is not usefull

  • I noticed this one was made in Japan. Has Spyderco quit production in the U.S.

I have an old native. Its just a bit small for my hand, but its the largest I can carry when I'm in Japan.

  • @mitc4314 im pretty sure that spyderco produces all of their vg10 blades in japan

  • @rororo64

Spyderco works with a small shop in Taiwan to do some of their low-volume, high quality knives like this one that used VG-10, but I think they're switching to using S30V in their Taiwan knives now.

    @mitc4314

They're still making knives in Golden, Colorado, but also have knives made in Japan, Taiwan & China (they've used makers in other countries in the past also). No single factory could produce all of their designs to the required standard at the target cost, so it's for the best.

  • I love the FFG native blade& the carbon fiber scales. hate the price i probably go sage for that price. very cool. review. thx for the info

  • If they had stuck with the S30v for the blade on this model then i would have definitely wanted one , as it stands atm i can take it or leave it , which is a shame .

    Great review as always.

  • Great review however... If you don't want jimping then it's a + that it doesn't have it because you CAN"T take it away yet it can be added on either personally or by a knifemaker at a very affordable price. I'd actually rather have it as is.

  • wait... what do you do with your 100dollar knives?

  • @MrKwanlee most series knife guys don't even consider 100 dollar knives expenive like my caly 3 I use the hell out of it.

  • @mustangfootball63 I agree I use my Sage 1 CF and Stretch CF with ZDP daily. It seems like almost 2-3 times a week someone goes "Holy shit man that knife is sweet". Some people buy knives to put them on a shelf, I buy them to use them, and there's nothing wrong with either it's just personal preference.

  • I appreciate that Nutnfancy says what it cost him when he bought his knife. It puts it in a realm of perspective. If that makes sense,

  • I think this knife is more jewelry than a tool The smooth handle scales, the plain ground, sleek, full flat grind blade with understated swedge and lack of jimping is simple elegance. If you see it as a dress knife, then the price comes more into line. It's bling. Carry it for bragging rights.

  • i have a spyderco native 2. i actually love it alot. it does everything i need. but i gotta agree, the serrations on spydercos do suck. so that's why i got a spyderco native 2 without serrations. i've never experienced the original model, the 3rd, or the 4th, but the Native 4 looks awesome.

  • Dam i want that knife!!!

too bad the cheepest i could find is $150 :(

  • this knife can be had for 99 shipped.

  • how about €260,- (that's $372)

American brand knives are No fun in Europe

  • is it possible to jimp aftermarket ?

  • No, you could do it yourself with a metal grinder. Those kinds of machinery are expensive though.

  • its possible, Nutnfancy has done it once or twice.

  • A quick comment on your vid regarding the carbon fiber cost. 5.6oz/sq yd plain weave carbon fiber in 1" wide tape is $5.50 CDN per yard. How thick are the handle pieces? I measured out some flat laminate at about .025" thick per ply (layer). The handle would be very easy to mass-produce if they just had a pre-laminated board and water-jet cut the pieces out of it. Cheap to custom produce too, could add texture easily as well. Ideas for anyone wanting to make custom handle pieces...

  • how does G10 compare to carbon fiber.I'm getting my first folder can't decide.Which is more durable?

  • Carbon fibre scales are expensive, however it is usually very consistent. There are only one kind of carbon fibre, however there could be many types of G10 scales. Carbon fibre isn't very grippy, G10, when done right is usually the very best kind of grip out there.

  • hey nutnfancy I am looking for another EDC knife that I can actually use and not be afraid of damaging it. But I have sweaty hands and I have a kershaw leek it has 1660 marked on the blade and it is rusting, Would the steel on the tenacious rust like that

  • First, $140 for the carbon fiber Native? Ridiculous. For that price you could pick up the superior Military or, if you want something smaller, the Para-Military.

I don't have the carbon fiber version of the Native, but I do own the standard production knife.

While not horrible, it certainly is my least favorite Spyderco blade. My biggest complaint being that the thumb hole is not fully exposed which makes for a relatively uncomfortable deployment.

  • Check out the Spydy Carbon Sage. Textured scales and jimping on the thumb ramp, I think.

  • I really like my CF Native... nearly perfect.

I like it enough that its horning in on my Sebenza's EDC time. Partially due to the Natives far-cheaper price, and also because its smaller/lighter. Its high enough quality to satisfy - very nicely made in fact - but not scary expensive enough to cause constant concern about losing it.

The screws on mine go all the way into the steel liners.

  • VG-10 better or worse than old Native steel??

  • Is this one Made-in-China too? Not copasetic. Let the commies keep their stinking child-made products and toxic tainted food. No reason to buy a chinese knife with so many American made (the way God intended) choices, like Kershaw and Benchmade.

  • its made in japan which still isnt good btu is better than china lol but spyderco is out of colerado

  • American made knives are expensive... This is made in Seki city which is a good place for making knives. Spyderco actually has a factory in Golden Colorado which is awesome!

    P.S.

American stuff is good but we need to compete with other companies prices.

  • i actually prefer knives made in seki city than in america, theybe been making blades in seki city for about 700 years.

  • That's a $150 knife. ;-)

  • Very nice knife, but i like the sage with carbon fiber handles, it has jimping on the top of the blade and on the finger groove on the bottom of the blade.....And the carbon fiber handles on the sage also have a mild texture to them, as to where the native is slick.....Great video as always

  • The regular native appears to be a better knife at a lower price.

The old native has excellent jimping on the back of the blade, fair traction on the handle, and the clip is secured properly by a bolt through the handle.

I don't mind the "rakish grind" on the blade, but I wish it had the spyderco logo on the blade.

I favor the spyderco native over other smaller knives I own.

  • Not an emergency defensive knife? If you're in an emergency, isn't EVERY knife an emergency defensive knife?

  • @nutnfancyfan01 i litterally ws just about to write that

  • @nutnfancyfan01 Edc means everyday carry, it also means Emergency defensive Carry.

  • @nutnfancyfan01

unless its coated in adrenalin and pain killers..then it's a bit counter productive.

  • @nutnfancyfan01 I'd feel safer using my hands than a SAK in an emergency.

  • I love personally love my Native, and I was excited about the Native 4, but I don't understand why the Native 4 is so freaking expensive! The Spyderco Sage is about the same size, has CF handles and CPM S30V blade steel, and it's like $40 CHEAPER!!!

  • is steel the only material for ised for blades?

  • for "normal" knives, yes. Although there are some kitchen knives made of super-hard ceramic. Those can get and stay WAY sharper than steel, but break/chip easily, so can only be used gently in the kitchen. Also i believe Cold Steel makes a series of knives made of a glass-reinforced plastic. haven't tried them, but they look very light and concealable and are meant for cheap, last-ditch defense.

  • 5/5m8

  • Beautiful!

  • well atleast this knife looks alot more sheeple friendly :P

  • i'd like to get my hands on that catalog.....

i'll look it up & see if they will send it free.....

    very nice blade

  • they'll send the 2009 one now, it took almost a month before mine came so dont expect speed.

  • Hey nutnfancy, just wondering if you can get ahold of a mercworx sniper. I'd love to see a review of it.

  • I concur, I would like to know if it is worth the rather large price tag.

  • I'm one of those guys that really likes the original Native. The grind is cool, to me. I love the volcano grip. Very practical, good price, nice quality. I dig it.

The carbon fiber version is WAY overpriced. I won't be getting one. Carbon fiber isn't that expensive. Buck has a Nobleman (out of China) and it prices less than $40...and it's quality is surprisingly good.

  • It's carbon fiber, thus pricey. Just like the T-Mag, $250 MSRP for Ti liners and carbon fiber.

  • I have the Sage (s30v) w/carbon fiber and love it. One difference is the Sage has the really nice jimping. Plus the carbon fiber looks smooth on the native and it is texured on the Sage.

Check out the Sage nutn, I have a feeling you would really like it.

  • dats a purty blade right der.

  • I was going to say adding fancy grips doesn't seem like a good reason to change your opinion on a knife, but with the other changes, it does become pretty nice, plenty of both kinds of cool.

  • Lovely little folder but the price is insane. Great review again!

  • I wouldn't buy the knife.

  • Really nice knife. I wouldn't buy it because its a little bit to fancy [no pun intended] for me for EDC. However, if someone gave it to me as a gift, i wouldn't turn it away...

  • It's not a bad knife at all, but it is overpriced in my opinion.

  • not for the price they're asking for it anyway.

  • Yea I would pay $60 at most for that knife.

  • Cool, you're retarded. :)

  • My EDC is a Benchmade 805S. I love it I got it for 80 bucks and it's a Pre Production.

  • Beautiful knife! Love the carbon fiber.

  • WHY do you do this to me!! I want it!!!

In reality you rock, cause if it wasn't for you I wouldn't know about it.

  • the review was awesome but the knife SUCKS (for the price)

  • i think the price its overrated, but is a good knife, and the carbon fiber is always a plus in visual/saving weight

  • really digging the new intro

  • what a joke $100 for that piece of crap. there's so many knives that are way better for a cheaper price

  • just like HumanStrategy i don't understand the "second cool" in knives

  • A Volvo will get you from a to b quite well and is well built and reliable. However, a Corvette will get you from a to b while looking awesome.

  • Can someone explain the whole knife fetish thing to me? Does it go beyond the basic utility of using the knife itself for a daily purpose?

  • Sure - I'll be glad to explain it. Knives are cool. Different knives for different jobs. Different styles of knives. Knives made of different materials. If you like to have a knife in your hand, you might have a lot of different knives. Hopes this helps.

  • "Knives are cool."

I think this foundational assumption is where I miss the train. Knives are used for variety of purposes but I rarely find myself in need of one in a modern society.

Do people purposefully go into the woods to manage using these things or something?

  • some do, I myself use a knife almost everyday. But it goes back to being more independent as a species. Do you want things catered to your needs or do you want to be able to handle things that arise on your own? In the modern society you speak of we have obesity problems, and almost a dumbing down of society itself. The generation, one or two from now, won't know how to cut a bagel in half without some sort of gadget to do so. Heck, they might not have bagels, who would want to live like that?

  • "Do you want things catered to your needs or do you want to be able to handle things that arise on your own?"

Catered. The reason our modern society is as advanced as it is, is because some people excel at certain trades.

The average college graduate understands physics much more than the intellectual giant Newton ever did; it is progress.

I have no idea how you have come to harbor so much disdain for humans. Are you one of those people who lives out in the woods with bears or something?

  • haha no, I don't have any disdain for humans, I am wary of the society we have built, but people themselves? I have no problem with.

Once progress gets to a certain point it becomes decadence, which is unhealthy. We definitely have a higher average standard of living, but we also have hundreds of people slowly eating themselves to death. Why? Because they can. Our modern age of having everything catered to you allows it. I enjoy technology and what advancement allows us, but balance is crucial.

  • and I don't mean a dumbing down as in the average person knows less. I mean that we are slowly becoming less intuitive, because we don't have to figure out and solve life's daily problems, something does it for us. By being so dependent on technology and catered devices we are losing the brilliance of being human and what made us able to advance the way we have. If you handed the average person a stick of wood, a knife, and a firesteel, very few would no how to make a fire.

  • That also leads me to my next point. What about when the technology and modern devices and buildings fail? What if a natural disaster occurs and you are left with no home, no food, no heat, no electricity. Much better to be able to handle that situation on your own, than possibly dying while you wait for a rescue to get there. As great as our modern age is, it has left us weak. That is why some guys still camp, and learn how to survive should crap hit the fan. Because it always will.

  • I will PM you. 500 word is too constrictive for this conversation.

  • yeah it's the carbon fiber

  • I'm a huge Spyderco fan with quite a few of their knives but of late I feel they're taking a lot of buyers for a ride. A VG-10 blade of that size, CF (even Spyderco's CF) and backlock does not warrant that kind of price. Especially since it is a production knife. Some fanboys may disagree but it's just my opinion, yours may differ. Checkout the Rocklobster and Temperance 2 for more examples of overpriced knives.

  • and the sound effects.......... knifes a rip off, id say it should be half the price

  • like the new intro nutn its pretty cool

  • Spyderco rocks!

  • wow! sexy knife!! looks like you can move the pocket clip to all four corners???

  • awesome dude thats my next knife to get for sure

  • it is a bit a woodcarving knifeshape

also the black painted clip will wear fast

  • why is it so ridiculously expensive compared the the native 3. i was sure i was gonna buy one until i saw the price. its only carbon fiber. im not really cheap with my knifes, but im kinda disappointed that spyderco priced it at $260 retail

  • that is a nice knife but the only the knives i get is fee market speicals $5.00 to $10.00

i am one of your sheep dogs that has been spank just to many times.

  • check out the spyderco sage. better than the native IMO. Finger hole is easier to get to and the price is good to boot.

  • Jimping makes or breaks a knife for him... Kind of wierd to rag on a kife for one thing but I guess it's his knife, and he should be crittical on points he values.

  • you should learn to make knives jsut because your so experted on them.. guns too you could get an amazing business going

  • I'd set it up on a wire EDM to burn some gimping grooves/serrations

  • very informatine. once again! great job

  • Does the CF make a difference in weight?

  • I've never trusted Carbon fiber since I got a sliver of the stuff in my palm. You'll have to work hard to break the handle, but a small fracture would make it a pain to use. The spiderco Blades are nice, but thier signature thumb hole seems like weak point to me. Maybe the VG-10 makes up for it, but Im a 'first kind of cool' dude myself, and though you'd never want to use a knife in a way that has torque against the blade, the thumb hole looks like where it would break if you did.

  • hmm, there are quite a few spyderco's that you don't like.. I just don't understand that. Spyderco's are my favorite knives by far. You should really try a full spyderedge... put some teeth on that baby. The native 4 in cf is a gentleman's folder and, like you said, is very hard to find. That plus the carbon fiber makes it expensive.

  • I don't know why, but i just couldn't make myself buy a spyderco. I never liked the design of spydercos. But after this review i think i'm going to get one.

  • This looks like an expensive version of the spyderco tenacious!

  • WTF is wrong with you? :D

  • Then don't watch them and don't bother commenting on them.

  • Then stay off this channel and dont click the knife reviews dumbass!!!!!!!!!!!

  • what is this ? the nutnfancy defense force? rofl

  • ROFL, Yeah! That's right! We have our own army :-) And it's cool. Jk...

  • nice knife o and btw when you say skate board tape you mean grip tape

  • Neat knife. Bad price :P

  • what would be better...a spyderco sage in carbon fiber or this blade the native??

  • I'd go with the Native just because I'd rather have the lockback than the liner lock

  • are they better? ive never really trusted lockbacks..

  • People have been using lockback knives for like 50 years...

  • Lockbacks are supposedly the strongest mechanism. I have never had a liner lock fail. Not even a slip joint for that matter. Knife safety, period.

  • I have had a liner lock fail before, but it was a really cheap knife, so that can not be used as a make agenst the design. Lockbacks are stronger, but I really can not see anyone being able to make a qualty liner lock fail under normal, or even abnormal use.

  • The pocket clip on this one looks better than the regular native as well. My regular version pocket clip is much to loose. A better deal if you like CF and Spyderco is to go with the Sage. You can get this online for less than $100 + it has S30v steel. Good review.

  • Why Spyderco keeps using SS liners is beyond me. They need to start making all their knives with partial inlayed liners like on the G-10/CF Military.

Looking at their upcoming knives though, they really seem to be digging Chris Reeve style titanium frame locks. I'm personally curious about the Leafstorm and Sage 2.

  • Thanks for the review, nutn. As a retired auto designer, aesthetics is very important to me, so I tend to place a lot of value on the looks of a product. No doubt the looks of this knife along with the premium carbon fiber handle accounts for the premium price. There is a similar Spyderco knife with a carbon fiber handle called the Michael Walker Sage that can be had for around $100. If you use TheFind product search, many show up at that price point.

  • Five Stars!!

  • i found it online for about 170 on several sites

  • that looks a lot better

  • The word, "jimp" came from N. England and Scotland, meaning neat, handsome, and slender in form. The knife industry designated regular machined cuts or cross-hatched patterns on the back of the spine of the knife to improve traction of the fingertips. They still call those regular spaced machine made cuts jimping, but the in the custom & handmade knife world has evolved into artistic filework. Jimping may be machine cut by automated slitters, mills, or blades, but filework must be hand-cut.

  • I would LOVE to have a Native without serrations, but I can't find any models without.

  • Comment removed

  • Carbon fiber is 100% the reason for the price. The steel isn't cheap either. I saw a carbon fiber knife made by wilson tactical today online. 100% carbon fiber, no metal at all. Interesting idea because it only weighs 1.7 ounces or so and it's a BIG fixed blade knife. I'd like to handle one, but I don't think they sell them to the public. I'd like to see nutnfancy get his hands on one. It's called the CF Stealth, and I saw it on mdtactical(dot)com.

  • It says to email them for ordering info...couldn't hurt to try right?

  • even if they aren't sold to the public he is military and law enforcement

  • nice shank

  • that is a buetiful knife but it should be around 50

  • corvettes are shit!!!

  • 12th

  • you should try and get your hands on the sage CF, ntf!

  • I have a Native3 and like it a lot, and thought about getting the CF Native4 FFG. However, I decided to go with Caly3 CF/ZDP and couldn't be happier :)

Native4 looks awesome, might have to pick it up when they make it in FRN.

  • you've made the right choice with the caly3 cf/zdp. that is one hell of a knife. better than the native IMHO

  • whoa, it's not a 20 minute review this time! :)

  • Nice looking blade but again $140 is ALOT for a pocket knife and i could never pay that much for one.

  • 140 dollars is a lot? the exact same knife costs 259 euros in europe..which is around 369.56 U.S. dollars. i hate the prices for knives here in europe the prices in the states are a big improvement compared to the european prices for the same knives

  • 5/5m8

  • Thanks for the honest review Nutn'.

  • what are you talking about you retard he said it right. JIMPING

  • no he is right everytime time he says it because they should have jimping on almost a knives with a few exeption... retard

  • I never said he was wrong?

  • Nutnfancy is the Greatest!!!!!

  • wow im just might buy that, darn illl have to find it

  • I was thinking of the same thing. It does look like a good EDC blade but overall kind of sucks. Just my opinion.
