Just as the emphasis on forms has watered down the art, so has point sparring. As one of the other posters called it, freeze tag.
It teaches speed over power. Defensively, you end up blocking ineffective techniques to avoid a point being scored against you. Offensively, you end up throwing ineffective techniques to score a point.
Case in point...the backfist. Really? You'd rarely throw this on the street, but it's one of the most important techniques in point sparring.
I say about ten or 15 in my opinion more according to the individual but doing karate two days, sports three days, Brazilian Jujustu for three is two much at one time.Master one thing and then move on to learn more. Uss
it usally reads do not get into fights or do not fight. There is a reason for that more so than to tell the student to be humble or not show off your skill. I have play around with some of the point fighting stuff and like i said earlier it serves its purpose but the kata has all of that and more to offer, ones has to respect his craft and pick apart what he or she has training in and they see so much that they will not have time to practice other forms of combat until many years has past.
the people who learn the Art on dilute it for the sake of making a fast buck are the problem and there is many other reason why. At lease if you dilute the art show the students who stand the test of time the true Martial Science. Sports Karate has its purpose but i truly believe traditional Karate has presence over SK. Realizethat it take many years to develop proper killing power and Healing power in regards to ones martial training. In the traditional school of okinwian on the walls
Jadi made some interesing points but i truly believe that he is wrong and right. More wrong than anything because as my instructor says your kata is where your fight comes from, all that you need to fight with is in your kata. Martial Science takes many years of training in the classical Arts in order to develop proper mechanics in ones body in order for a human to realistically defend themselves against multiple Attackers or even kill a person with one strike. Kaate is not the problem
(part 2 of 2) And never practice sparring all out from a more plant controled stance with defense and offense put together. Then that person is n a lot of trouble if they have to use their knowledge n a life or death situations. Now don't get me wrong point sparring is excellent. It's just a sport & alot of black belts these days are being lead to believe u actually fight the same way. And all yeah katas are cool also but they do nothing for a street fight. Glade u made this video!!!
(part 1 of 2) That is so true. I've done tang soo do, tkd, karate, boxing & I bounced for a few years n a couple of bars/clubs. I've noticed that a lot of people who point spar alot of times, only practice fighting in a point sparring mindset. I mean you fight in the streets the way you practice. So if you spend all your time doing katas or just worring about throwing a off balance technique just to score a point.
i agree at my school jadi i teach reality to my students in levittown pa. some people do take it as a joke but like most karate school i mix it up with tech from your video as well as others to make my students effective when they are in the streets
My whole point again is that when u take all the reality out of your school and art is the problem and sell it as reality points is something I do at tournaments but by no means is that all we do be clear. Points is a sport not all that we do nor do I claim it to be self defense are reality
I feel you jadi, but don't you think you have profit off of doing super freeze tag.
Also yes certain schools are wateing down there art to get more clients because the emergence of "MMA", but at the end of theday, the martial science is powerful when taught right.
He is right, because a lot of school are driven by retention rather than substance. They are going to appeal to the parent rather than teach the self defense. If the child is not getting a new belt every so often then the parent feels like he/she is wasting his/her money. Which become more like a daycare center rather than a school of self defense. Martial Arts, Karate, Kung Fu, etc; it is a contact sport. Learn to stop the agressor.
Osu indeed! I couldn't agree more. If it doesn't work, why waste your time? Karate can be real self defence but we got to throw out the time wasting garbage. That's why my students love what we do, because as one parent said "This isn't something they haven't seen on a Saturday night outside the pub."
Karate can be real. We just got to put up with the bumps, bruises and accidental kicks to the groin and eye gouges on the way.
I'm not saying u have to spar like u in a cage but u should know what it is to get hit and hit back and too many schools are getting away with that but still want to have the respect of being a effective art
So I'm not saying u need to be a mma school by no means or u shouldn't do kata I'm saying we have a obligation to also bring back good training good kick punches I do point in my school but that's one aspect we have mma hmm boxing kickboxing But all student gave to spar how do u say u are in a martial arts school but u have the option not to fight insane
Hey guys jadi again thanks for feedback. Again let me clarify my stance. In my opinion the problem is that the karate schools in particular have watered down the art so much that it's no even effective. Nothing wrong with kata but when u make that the core training and then tell somebody this prepares u for combat that's false when students are in school and they do more theory then actual application that's crazy
not to mention that point fighting was a way to put ones skills into use/practice without serious injury and bit by bit turned into what we have today....hit without getting hit so i can bring a trophy back to my school. it aint jadis fault that a EVEN THO YOU KNEW HE WAS GOIN FOR THE BLITZ BACKFIST YOU COULDNT DO SHIT ABOUT IT... why fix whats not broken? i digress...lol... what goes on in the gym is what really matters...you dont like sparring?let ur instr. kno you only joined to stay in shape
jadi its iz. i think this video was clear enuff to be easily clearly understood. wtf is the confusion about? you dont wanna spar today?you dont wanna spar so hard?speak up and let it be known otherwise you should already be expecting some type of real combat at your dojo/gym. karate like all other arts are a lifestye way of life... failure to fully understand this can result in one being injured and or being pissed off when you have to go to work the next day with a black eye.
I believe what Mr Tention says is true in a lot of cases, but not all. If you'd care to have a look at Norton Dojo on Youtube the training there isn't points orientated. One can only go so far with contact. How full is "Full Contact"? Bearing in mind the students usually have to go to work the next day. A few "training badges"(bruises) are to be expected and perhaps a bloody nose now and again but I
believe certain restrictions need to apply, don't you think? I'd value your opinion, sir.
@fumikomgeri MMA is a Full Contact Sport. No holds Barred. Point sparring is not. It is more like tag. You still have to fight with self control. It does not means to knock the head off of your opponent. You do this in the street not in the classroom. As you and your partners skill level increases you may take some really good licks and that is all part of the fighting experience. To elaberate on what Mr. Jadi was saying, the defense has be remove from Self Defense.
Finally.. I believe it should be MANDATORY for the safety of the students to either engage in light or FULL contact sparring. Adults should be doing full contact.
In real life, someone trying to hurt you wont just grab your hand, chances are as soon as you grab his/her wrist - they will start to throw punches and engage in combat. Techniques wont help you much here - now its time to spar.
And when it comes to sparring - I think point sparring is perfectly fine. It WILL help you tremendously SO LONG AS you dont rely on it. Point sparring will only ever help you on your speed and accuracy. When someone is coming at you with speed and power and an intent to hurt/kill, it becomes a lot more serious and much more difficult. You cant just throw in a quick jab here and there and not worry about getting kicked on the back - you need to NOT get hit..
I agree... It annoys me that all martial arts are now being watered down to simple 'art form' It's LITERALLY becoming dance art. It annoys me when people do not engage in sparring.. so many people I see in that are MUCH MUCH higher ranks than me, even black belts and higher........ would get their ass handed to them in a real combat situation.. which is sad but true.
Too many schools are simply doing punching drills.. punching air? You need to get your wrists and hands used to punching objects!
let me say this this is not about me at all or what fills my wallets or if im claming to be tuff so lets not make this personal this video is about the watering down of martial arts in our schools as a WHOLE!! when u have people going for black belts and never sparred and im not talking about just tournaments or just doing 10 katas and present it as self defense is a disservice to the student and the art nothing more or less
It's just like what Lyoto Machida said. Sport Karate is weak in a real fight but it still helps with developing your timing and distancing. Martial art karate is funtional. It has knees, elbows, takedowns. The trick is to teach students both the sport aspect and the martial art aspect.
Funny from a dude that fights point karate with a MASK,backfist',to the body and has never closed his hand when fighting! Just watch the video's,he's very talented but soldout years ago, now he's HARD LMFAO N_ _ _ er PLEASE
@myafpro I agree- I have trained in Karate since age 8, and now i am an instructor. Traditional Shotokan Karate is very intense and does have a sense of Budo, a characteristic that this art lacks. BY all means, if it fills his wallet, let him join the ranks of Tiger Shulman. As for myself, i will keep my kata, my form, my passion and my teaching for those who deserve it. Oss!
well said. totally agree that we need to bring back a bit more of a combat element in 2 our game of point sparring. no more soft touching and crappy techniques.
chozn i dont think my point is saying that there should be no more point tournaments nor am i saying kata should end as well im saying when u have schools that only do this and sell it as a mean of defense then thats where the decline begins i think there are certain moves that u can apply in point and also within a kata certain moves but to teach it and say this is defense or not explain that its not for defense u are doing the student a disservice.
