I don't think rational discourse is necessarily impossible when a person has personalized a position. I think some people are big enough that they can take personal criticism without being irrational so I don't see why they couldn't do the same with a position they've personalized.
...of course I may just be being defensive and trying to rationalize the fact that I personalize things. (,_,)
I don't think it's absolutely impossible, just a significant impediment, I think most of us have at one time held a position that we've held and personalized, but later transitioned to a state of rejection of that position [seams to me most youtube atheists were at one time christians.] You can also personalize something to different degrees, some people personalize hardly anything, and only to small degrees, I think this is where most of the tolerance of criticism is going to come from.
Yes. And the saddest thing of all is that many people identify with words like "worthless", "stupid", "ignorant", "incompetent" and other denigrations of their worth in much the same way. It has taken much of my adult life to get over being called "incompetent" by people who know far less than I do about a given subject when my designs fail and to stop blaming anyone but myself for those failures. People internalize all sorts of words and concepts.
huh.. great video. you're probably right, maybe labeling yourself is bad because it's personalizing. i know if someone were to say anarchist i'd turn my head in a heartbeat. maybe i should just think of myself as Sean, an individual without my own beliefs, and not identify as anything in particular? i don't know, i tend to think labels can be useful, but yes personalizing them does tend toward emotional behavior.
Labels are not bad as long as their used as expedient ways to convey commonly understood concepts. Once you start to view something as yourself [when it's, in fact, not you] things get problematic.

I'm going to be honest and say I haven't gotten so many elaborations on ideas that are practical to use on a day to day basis since I can remember.
Thank you so much.
Fantastic.
