  • Why doesn't anyone quote facts and figures? Until I see some I haven't got a clue what power this thing is producing.

  • omg her accent goes straight threw ya

  • There is something like this that is off the coast of Fremantle Australia. Its a bit different in it having just a submerged buoy that bobs up and down with the waves instead of this huge snake like thing.

  • Will work great untill crustaceans grow all over them.

  • i LOVE the word crustaceans.

  • I watched a video on bio-mimicry where they're working on a surface style akin to that of.. I think it was basking sharks. the surface of their scales prevents barnacles and bacteria from adhering to the shark. This was being studied for application to surfaces in hospitals but I would think can be easily applied here as well.

  • I have an idea to convert wave energy. watch my video "floating wave energy extractor".

  • wouldnt it be more effective to simply put underwater turbines in places where there is a decent amount of current?

  • What if they scare small fish? Then the population of fish would decrese, so unless we learn to eat electricity, then this may or may not work.

  • Most Oceanic fish are hardy unlike delicate tropical or marine life, seeming as these 'anacondas' aren't actually predators if the shoals of smaller fish did become aware that they might be predatorial the response would be to swim away. The idea that this could reduce fish population is illogical. a bigger risk would be damage caused by ships or debris floating on the sea surface which could cause perferations along the design. It would be interesting to know the product life time...

  • hmm well actually there is a logic to what Jul say about the effects on nature 1: fish would become fearless of the anaconda device and ignore pikes and eels which are already fierce predator fish 2:the anaconda motion and electrical charge may effect the predator's sensor's causing them to starve 3:fish would leave the area which may be habitat of plankton or other food chains causing unbalance could in effect wipe out species ,so yep location of these anaconda's would have tobe tactical choice

  • They wouldnt be associated with predators to sea life, because of their static position floating on the surface. They would be more akin to seaweed or a kelp forest which normally creates habitat for smaller animals. Not to mention they are 600+ feet, larger than the largest blue whale. As for affecting a sharks ability to sense electrical impulses and possibly starving, that would assume that sharks have a set territory, and no other sensory systems to help them hunt, if affected at all

  • why didnt i think of this :/

  • nuclear fusion, not waves

  • wouldnt people be scared if they saw andaconas

  • I wonder what those anacondas eat

  • "These bulges just grow and grow..."

  • There already is a prototype, and I saw it at the end of documentary: "Home". If this project proves to be feasible. Coastal cities and Island nations with little nature resource can sure be benefit from it.

  • Every video posted by newscientistvideo is littered with mindless comments posted by imbeciles. It's getting irritating.

  • They should look at Schauberger's work and spin the water to create... well, they will understand.

  • goes though an eclectic generatooooor

    are experimenting with different desiiiigns

    by bearing the pressure insiiiiiide

  • yeah, they're using these to power the new world order Templar illuminati .

This is the source of recent USO ( unidentified submersible object) reports as they travel at high speeds to reach locations of the greatest wave action. Stay tuned for more, The Truth is SpooF.

  • Wow, using animals, that kind of messed up. Wow, people can do almost anything, haha animals, robots and other in important things.

  • Why round? Why not flatten out the whole structure (like a flat noodle) , the more surface area to be manipulated by the waves the better right? And why fill em with water? Fill em with a conductive fluid and make the inside surface of the "noodle" reactive to the motion of the fluid, thus producing energy....hehe..just thinkin out loud

  • yes, lets fill them with fluid that will inevitably leak into the ocean causing more pollution. great idea

  • this was on James May's big ideas. apparently it was invented in the 70s, but the government did give it the green light because some bull research, that was pretty much fabricated, said it would take and obscene amount of energy to use it, and that it wouldn't give anything back.

  • cool

  • this is great! what will they think of next!

  • I know right these things are amazing!

  • I vote Rod Rainey for new narrator!

  • ... Me Too!!!! XD

  • Every new scientist video has the same comments:

    The narrator's voice is annoying!!!

    Every time.

Does new scientist not listen to any feedback?

  • DAMN I HATE THE FEMALE NARRATOR!

  • lol..indeed..annoying..

  • This technology is pretty impressive. I can't wait to see if it actually works like they say it does.

However, the big question people need to ask is: How much is the maintenance cost? Will it cost more to fix these things than the power they generate? Let's face it, hurricanes would devastate these things.

  • and boats

  • Ah, that's true too ^_^.

  • This is good but, whats the maintenance costs? And are these going to be treated like windmills? Where they mostly get used for backup energy?

  • it all depends on advances in battery and grid technology

  • anaconda powered. yeah

  • Are these hurricane proof?

  • not yet

  • Learn to speak English please, thanks.

  • yea they could have chosen a better speaker; her voice is... well i cant put my finger on it, but its not that pleasant to listen to long.

  • She puts an emphasis at the ends of all words and talks as if she wants to sound clear and express all words fully but most English words are not meant to be fully sounded so it sounds weird and unpleasant I agree.

  • Pillowarz, your voice drives me insane!

    Stop being a fag.

    She's being clear.

  • anacondas for energy!!!!!!!!!

  • I like this Fish with Bread around it

  • yeah, lets kill all the good surf spots. sounds sweet. :(

  • haha shut up

  • go eat some holy toast dry. sucker.

  • They're probably going to just stick them out in the ocean, not near the beach.

  • -.-

  • Shut the fuck up...

  • Outstanding!

  • Epic tech!

lets get em in the water like...now!

put a thousand in, lets get the grid kicking with free/clean energy

  • don't usually believe in chain comments, but this one is pretty cool. u don't need to do it, but when u read it, u might smile. :)There are 20 angels in this world10 are sleeping9 are playing1 is reading thisput this on 4 video comments within 15 mins,if u do, sum one u love will surprise u sum how!! If u don't , u will lose ur love.!!

  • well i like it XD i hope they make something good and usefull outa this

  • hmm electricity in water... power enough for 50.000 homes in the swimming water.. can you say electricution ?

Thats what i am thinking :D

  • "these bulges just grow and grow"... oh the inuendo!

  • 1:00 lol life jacket in a swimming pool

  • that's so cute :D

  • I can't stand her voice..

    I hateshhhh shpesple witsh lishphs

  • It's called an accent. She's bilingual, are you so educated?

  • I hate it too..

  • i think it would be funny if there was a guy going swimming and he saw a real anaconda in the water and thought it was the fake one for power and he got eaten...or is it just me?

  • Oh don't mind me, im on my way to page 10 of the comments section.

  • roflmao

  • If the people making these things are intelligent to come up with this idea and implement it to make it work, I'm sure they're intelligent enough to ensure they won't get destroyed in a storm, or to make sure that boats won't run over them.

  • Most people have never even heard of buoys, I guess ...

  • i can generate a traveling bluge

  • 1000 homes powered by just one? nicee

  • One question: what about boats?

  • I'd imagen it'll be in seald off places

  • what about them?

  • Boats will tear 'em up.

  • so?

  • Won't that cost a lot?

  • A beautiful car that if I had hit while he made that turn would have sued for it and painted it red. :>)

  • LOL Bulge....giggity!

  • one storm will crack them all up

  • or make em produce a lot of power....

  • Was this a repost? I've seen this from NSV before I think.

  • i don't know about you other people but if i was boating and saw one of those in the water i would freak out.

  • you would dieded?

  • i want to play in that pool!

  • that womans voice is so annoying

  • how do they prevent sea monsters from eating them in the ocean?

  • By making them shout : "I wouldnt do that! MY POWER LEVEL IS OVER 9000!!!!!"

  • somone lurks /b/ ;)

  • laser turrets.

  • one anaconda = one thousand homes.

    thats bloody awesome!

  • We should focus on Geothermal Energy.

  • look up thermal depolymerisation, oil is no longer non renewable.

  • oil is still bad for the nature.

  • Ture but so is war.

  • Yep...

  • agreed, seems stupid that its so ignored. Go to iceland and see the full benefits of it. Air is so clear, people are healthy.

  • but i was sure there was already many ways to make waves to electricity...

  • just watch 10 years down the road some asshole is gona critisize it as being dangerous to wildlife or some shit. fucking PETA...the bastards..

  • Nice, another unique environmental friendly power source.

  • I hope this technology pushes through.

We need cleaner and very very very cheap power source.

  • I hate her voice, I HATE IT... EVERY TIME!

  • Hahaha yeah it's kinda anoying actually =P

  • she has a weird intonation... especially at the end of sentances. as for hating it? meh, a bit extreme?

  • agree...

  • Let's hear your voice then.

  • Bergen79, don't be such a baby, I don't have a good voice to work as a narrator, and she is too.

  • Then just say you think her voice is not suitable for narration. That sounds a lot better than: "I HATE IT... EVERY TIME! " You wouldn't say that if you were standing in front of her either, would you?

Don't you realize how an awful thing it is for someone to read that people 'hate' their voice? It's not like she can do anything about it...

If you don't like her voice, then so be it. Live with it. But don't leave replies about it written in CAPS, ok? Thanks.

  • LOL!

  • The narrator have speak deffecr

  • try something that slows the water down while allowing pressure rise.. on the level with a turbo jet engine slowing the air down to increase Propulsion Efficiency .

  • Love that voice <3

  • thats not a recent tech, its an older idea, has mech links inside that move generators inside too.

  • Just stick a few kids with floaties in there and they'd power a house or two.

  • just pay people to squeze the tubes all day. im shure someones willing.

  • wtf is up with her tongue?

  • One thing I don't understand: if water is forced out the end of the tube through a turbine won't it take at least as much energy as is gained to refill the snake with fresh water again at the other end?

  • 0:39

  • that was a model

  • Narrator sounds like a female robot, lol

  • the narrator is pretty annoying, has to be said

  • ye ur right. she sounds like a bimbo readin shit she doesnt understand

  • I like the lifejackets

  • Pretty old for New Science.

  • Don't the Japanese already have this technology?

  • Japanese and Portuguese...

  • old news

  • narrator accent and voice are annoying but I'm subscriber .. for now...

  • stop complaining

    the narrator isn't half bad

  • Not enough information, poorly presented with an unforgivable voice over.

    Not good enough 'New Scientist'.

  • That's pretty cool.

But I wish the narrator was someone else...it sounds weird....

  • I think she might be Greek. I had a greek TA once and she had a similar type of oddity in her voice. It sounds like some type of speak impediment or something.

  • ive heard like 3 other people speak like her...

  • this is old tech :P

  • WTF! Get a better narrator!!@!@$@!$

  • lol

  • Wow! Each one could power 10,000 homes, I wonder what the cost is to build one.

  • I think it's actually 1,000 homes (50 of them power 50,000 homes). That's still a lot more power than I was guessing.

  • You installed a spycam in your neighbor's room?

  • the narrator for all these videos sounds weird. Get a new one.

  • thats not nice.. she misght have children

  • haha what does having children have anything to do with it?

  • so she wont have money to take care of them. She is sounding sexy like a geek

  • it's cool but nothing new.

at the moment I'm powering my home with a rubber chicken!

  • whats up with the name snake??

  • Wow thats a very cool idea.

  • HATE that voice

  • yea so whiny voice

  • me too, it's really fucking annoying. what accent is it? silly bitch!

  • Great!

  • Those scientists are having fun !!!

  • Certainly the women scientists are :P

  • I'm sure some Extreme Eco folk might worry that this will slow down the rotation of the earth, or make the moon fall out of orbit...

  • Or maybe they might applaud it for reducing the pollution from coastal cities whislt providing a vital resource, which is much more likely.

  • In my physics class, one time I asked how many cars had to drive in the same direction in order to effect enough linear momentum to reverse the spinning of the Earth.

    Prof definitely laughed at me.

  • Hahaha, you would think it would, but just like

the acceleration of a car, you would slowly stop leaning as much into the cushion, eventually inertia would make the cars power to spin the earth backwards dissipate.

  • if he laughed at you he's an asshole.

students who ask things should never be laughed at

  • haha. I agree. didn't bother taking second semester of that garbage.

  • Coll I guess, but judging by the amount you'd need just to power 50,000 homes, I dont think thered be enough ocena space for this to be a viable alternative. As each area you use would have to be cordoned off, and with shipping lanes already over crowding. I could see a lot of accidents happening.

  • 50 at 200 feet long would supply 50,000 homes or a small town. This is a solution for low density coastal communities, not the likes of major cities like New York.

I think you underestimate the surface area of the seas and oceans. There are many, vast areas that would be ideal that are nowhere near shipping lanes (which are, after all, quite narrow in conparison).

  • Why?

  • cool

  • Interesting but what would happen during a bad sea storm?

  • More energy transfered I guess, more electricity.

  • or the tube gets totally shredded and you have to replace it AND the turbine.

  • shit ton of energy production. And more Sailor tales about Giant Serpents.
