  • emozionante....

  • Thanks for adding this, i can't listen anything after listening to this piece !

  • Really gorgeous singing. Just chanced upon this (punny) and was mesmerized.

  • Love the way Michael Chance translates bach's masterpiece into this deeply emotionally engaged aria. It is almost as if Michael Chance understands what he is singing about and what is the purpose of of conveying a message in song to the public. As in the old days...love this counter tenor. One of the best, I have ever heard.

  • Isn't this supposed to be song by an alt? So a woman? I really respect counter tenors, I really admire there skills but I don't know... It feels wrong. And who is supposed to be the virgin later in the piece? Mabey I'm wrong but I was suprised to see a man singing this. Altough he sounds great.

  • @evelientenbroeke non ce n'est pas un chant de femme, ce chant est supposé être celui de l'évangéliste-ès-St Mathieu , et par conséquent celui d'un homme.

  • Instruments and voice so complementary here.

  • @SalieriLives Thanks for commenting Bach's skills!

  • Michael Chance, Commander of the British Empire. Countertenor/Male Alto. Married. Two kids. Now, whether he swills beer and belches while watching football matches... if he does, I'm sure it's in key!

  • @Cntr10r Great comment!!!

  • der altus ist gut!

  • @TedStrangelove It's a totally different style... She has a beautiful voice but I think Michael Chance sings it more like Bach intended it to be sung.

  • George Frederic Handel was partial to the castrato voice, wooing Farinelli until he persuaded him to perform in some of his operas. Today there are male Sopranists as well as male altos to fullfill this obligation!!!

  • Talk about Castrati ... they served Kings and Emperors too and often fathered children before agreeing to be castrated . In China castrati were mocked as 'teapots'. When so mocked they used to run screaming in their offended condition. Or was it 'went hysterical'? Anyway there's some historical info.

  • prefer his early work when he was less camp...is that Westminster Cathedral Choir, or Kings?

  • Thank you for posting this. I am awed by Chance's voice and presentation.

  • CASTRATO : This operation is fordidden! He is counter tenor!

  • Astonishing!

  • Well done! I've never heard this part sung by a castrato before.

  • Castrato? I'm pretty sure that this man is not a castrato. In fact he is actually a counter tenor, which is a completely different thing.

I'm sure you would be very hard pressed to find an actual castrato now days, considering the way most of world feels about castrating young boys, especially for the soul purpose of ensuring that they sing pretty.

  • But castrato's stell exist dude! You can find castrato's right now, but I'm pretty sure Michael Chance is not a castrato.

  • Caatrato? I believe you can find castrated men, perhaps in various parts of the world. However I seriously doubt you can find a person who has actually been castrated merely to save their singing voice. Most castrations are likely done after adulthood, and for social reasons not related to art.

  • Right. I know that Michael Chance is a countertenor!

  • i wonder mr handel had to say about this? all of handels opera one side and this on the other

  • Thank you for posting this. Being a fan of Michael Chance myself, I felt as if I were hypnotized by his vocalization. It's worth five out of five stars for this video.

  • Magnificient!
